I just bought a Hanger 9 Miss America P-51. I am trying to decide what motor I want. I want the plane to be very fast and look good. I immediately thought of Dub Jett. I'm thinking I could cowl or at least hide the engine and possibly the muffler fairly good. What would you reccomend as a motor and muffler setup. Here are the plane specs, just in case. I had a Hanger 9 P-51 with an OS91FX. I would like a little more power and a lot less muffler and engine showing.

Wing Span: 65.5 in (166.4 cm)
Overall Length: 55.75 in (141.6 cm)
Wing Area: 754 sq in (48.1 sq dm)
Flying Weight: 7.0 - 8.5 lb (3.2 - 3.9 kg)
Engine Size: .60 - 1.00 (2-stroke), .91 - 1.00 (4-stroke)

Thank You
Shane Greene

Hi Shane....

Thought I would reply here too. I believe we covered a number of options via email.

For the H9 P-51 and Miss A the Jett 90L using the standard Jett-Stream would be the simplest upgrade beyond the OS91FX. Mount the engine inverted, allow the muffler to exit the cowl and run down along the side of the fuselage. The installation may require 1 or 2 of the .25" spacer to properly locate the muffler away from the fuselage. Your prop selections available here are fairly broad, but you would start off with a standard APC 12x6, which will turn around 14K rpm. You can then work with different prop to give you the best speed or balanced performance. Just keep the engine turning between 12,800 and 14,500 on the ground, and leave it 500 rpm rich from peak for launch.

Another option would be utilizing a Jett BSE-120 engine, and turbo-jett muffler. It is the same physical size as a "60" (ie, OS91FX, jett 90L, others). In this case, side mount the engine (cylinder exits cowl side about an inch). The turbo-jett would fit below the engine within the cowl. The MissA has a fairly generous cowl. Here, you would want to use a larger/higher pitch prop, keeping the rpm down at or below 12K rpm. Pleant of low end power here, so props along the lines of 12x12 or 13x10 (and more pitch too) are within reason.

Either set-up will give you good performance, and outstanding top-end speed.

I hope this is helpful

Bob

Bob, I appreciate your help. You and Dub were a lot of help in this matter. I have never dealt with a company that spent as much time and effort in helping me with such a small issue. As you probably know I ended up ordering 2 90L's for myself and a friend, who is buying the same plane. We are going with the Jett stream muffler. Dub went as far as to offer to retune the muffler once we determined how many shims or spacers we use. We plan on sending you a picture of the finished product as well as a performance report and a top speed. Our original plans were to watch **** for a couple of used Jett engines, which is how I purchased my .40 Jett engine, but I can definately see the advantage in buying new directly from Jett engineering as they customer service is worth a lot more than any amount I could save in buying a used motor off ****. From now on, any time I have a project that I need a motor...Jettengineering will be the first place I turn.

Thanks
Shane

Thanks for the kind words.

We aim to please

Can't wait to see the aircraft!

You do not often see used jett engines up for sale. Every so often you find one from someone moving on to a different aspect of the hobby and such. But for the most part, Jett owners tend to hang on to the engines.
