Can anyone tell me what would be the best brushless/esc setup for my lOSI XXX-T MF1? It's a 1/10th scale stadium truck. I am very interested in brushless technology and am researching heavily before my first purchase. From what I understand...the brushless motors redline & power is established by how many batteries you use, but each motor has it's limit. I would like to use as many batteries as I can, Lithium if they are the best. What would be the best setup in you opinion and what kind of problems/setbacks/limitations might I expect? Should I get any other equipment or add/ons, voltage regulator?

I have set aside about $500 for the receiver/esc/motor. I have already decided on the DSM Spektrum 2.4 receiver($160.00). I cant wait to get this project done!!! THANK YOU!

Your best bet would be to contact mike at http://www.rc-monster.com -- he is very helpful and carries a wide variety of brushless components for cars. He can steer you in the right direction based on what your expectations are.

Thank you, I propably will since they are held in very high regard with posters on this site, (you guys are very knowledgable). But there are several motors and esc's that he does not carry, so I wanted to get input on different models. Example, Mamba 8000/Mamba 25 combo...ReedyNEO, Novak, Aveox, Chili pepper, I forget the names but there are even more than that! Are most of you guys in Europe? I'm a yankee. Thanks again, cheers!

The mamba is not going to cut it for a 1/10th scale car, aveox are primarily for planes - probably not a great 'daily driver' in your xxxt, the neo and novaks are sensored, and limited in terms of voltage and gearing.

The bmi (chili pepper) motors are supposed to be great. studysession may be able to give you some insight on those - he's used them.

I'd go with the Feigao/ Warrior combo or even the Novak system... I have two SS5800 systems and haven't had a problem, but some have... For me these are on the fast side (in my T4 and Pede), and I don't know if I would ever want more speed! I would make sure to get a very very strong steering servo regardless, maybe a 5645MG as it has a little more torque and response time than a regular 645MG (what I'm running in my SS5800s). I hear the spektrum is awesome so definately go with that... You may want to switch to a T4 because the stealth trans is stronger than the xxx-ts... Don't forget matched batteries for your brushless, otherwise it won't even run! I would recommend Team Scream, he makes great packs, tell him Alex sent you. Good Luck with your project!

Actually IMHO they're not limited in either simply because they're sensored.Rather being sensored makes them slightly less efficient than a sensorless motor of the same construction and power ratings.Generally sensored motors are smoother and suffer less from low voltage cogging and the smoother power application can be an advantage when running on a very tight track .However you give up those few efficiency points in the process

Hope this helps

Peace

I didn't mean to imply that being sensored was the reason for their limitations. The fact that they are sensored limits compatibility with other brushless products on the market. To me, 7 cells is a limit that I don't care for when I can spend the same $$$ on a competitor's product and run up to 18 cells. Gearing is also a limit when you can't vary too far from novak's recommendation without serious heat issues.

I agree the novak (or any sensored system) is smoother under low power with less or no cogging. You can also run sensored systems with lower quality batteries, which helps reduce the initial cost if you don't have a pile of matched/zapped packs handy.

I'm running both the Novak SS and the Feigao/ Warrior combo in my 2 cars. The Novak is smoother under acceleration, and runs much better on sport packs. The Feigao/ Warrior combo demands the best cells that you can get your hands on. If you try to run them on the sport packs, the cogging is unacceptable. It looks like it's stuttering when you try to accelerate. It's the motor trying to draw more current than the battery can supply. Nothing wrong with it, but it just requires a much more potent power source.

Between the 2, I like the Novak for just bashing. It has good run time on sport packs and seems to be a decent handling back-yard motor.
The Feigao/ Warrior combo is really great for embarrasing the nitro guys... When my quiet electric b4 just screams right by them!

Right on guys I'm lovin the feedback here. I'm not sure the Novak is the way to go for me, I like that you can use cheaper packs with low cogging but money is not really an option for me, I want the best of the best. I can totally buy like $100 battery packs if they get me what I want...I want to leave Nitro guys scratching their heads!! I want to run my truck as fast as hell for like 30 minutes, can I do it?? The future seems to be now...

I'm also decideing if I want to buy a brushless system and if I do what would be a good truck to put it in. I've decided if I buy brushless i'm going to purchase a stampede. Just for the fact it would we crazy fun to bash it around and at those kinds of speeds. What is sensored and non sensored? I keep hearing this being said how a sensored motor limits the brushless motor why is that?

"I want to run my truck as fast as hell for like 30 minutes, can I do it?? The future seems to be now..."

The long and the short answer is no. I haven't run a 3600 cell yet, but the BEST run time that I have gotten thus far is 18 min on a gp3300 matched pack. That is running the Feigao 8s. A larger ( the 6s) motor will drain the battery faster. You will be able to get your truck up around nitro speed with a brushless setup, but it won't run as long as you want. ( remember, most Nitro vehicles only carry anough fuel for 15-20 min anyway!)

A sensor based esc/motor used a processor to monitor motor rpm and adjust to the input voltage of your battery. A sensorless esc/motor simply delivers all available voltage to the motor, regardless of the battery. You need to run high quality matched cells to take advantage of a sensorless motor. Advantages? They are supposed to achieve higher rpm potential than sensor based models, but will draw almost twice the current from the battery when running. I have both. I think the Novak SS is a better bashing motor. It's cheaper, and you can use less expensive cells. The Feigao runs like an ape on fire. I haven't done any serious off roading yet, but it seems capapble.

That's kind of a funny comparison, but very true! Maybe they should do an ad campaign based on that slogan!
