HI
Just got hold of a s/hand electric heli. The 11.1v Lipo that came with it has only 1 black and 1 red wire coming of it, but it has a circuit board under the shrink wrap. When I plug it into my Lipo charger all the warning lights come on. The charger that came with it is cheap 12v 800ma mains plug in type. What is the board for and how do I charge it safely?
Thanks
Alan

I don't think you provided enough info. Try to answer these:

What make/model lipo charger do you have?
What make/model battery is it?

If it's unlabeled, post a pic and someone here can likely identify it and help answer your question.

Hi Mark,
I took the shrink wrap off the pack to look for the makers name, none. While the covering was off I checked all the links and found that the output wires were crossed ie black wire on the +ve and red wire on the-ve output. I have changed these over and the charger seems to be woking(Kokam402). It has been sugested that the way the p/c board is wired that it is a "ballancer" unit.
Thanks
Alan

The PCB is a regulator and over charge protection circuit. I highly doubt it is cell balancing circuitry, only the most expensive / high quality packs have this feature (i.e. Duralite) The wall wart or whatever you said it came with is a horribly cheap unit and it only supplies a raw voltage and current output. The small PCB regulates this output of the plug-in device so the battery gets the proper charge without blowing it up.

You wont be able to charge it with your Li-Ion / Li_Po charger unless you ditch the PCB. Unless you are very adept with Li-Poly technology and know exactly what rate you charge THOSE packs at I would not recommend doing this.

The reason suppliers put that pcb on battery packs is twofold > 1 it allows them to use a wall wart (very cheap) and 2, by holding the charge rate to very low level they avoid any liability when some moron hooks it up to a 12V car battery and it explodes when he tries to charge it.

I would recommend using the wall wart or replacing the pack.
