Well the 6.6.1 gears and 11X4.7 prop are the "HOT LICK". Worked really well. It will pull straight up until you pull back on the throttle. I did most of my flying at way less than half throttle. The first battery lasted over 20min. of aggressive sport flying. Got about 15 min. into second flight on second battery and mid aired with a foamie. Lots of carnage. Foamie blew up, UCANDO has one wing torn off. It is fixable I will work on it tomorrow. The MPI MAXX gears held up great, don't show any signs of wear. I was pleasantly surprised of that because this ESC does not have a soft start, pretty hard, and is not programmable. The gears are not a drop in fit. This motor has a 2.2mm shaft. The spur gear had 2.0mm hole. Had to drill it out. Fortunately I have a proper size bit. The MPI pinion gear also had a smaller hole. Had to drill it out a little also.

Ron,

That WOW and the Dymond kits are definitly not the same stuff. The ESC we got has a soft start AND programmable brake. Not sure if it's the same motor... not enough specs to judge, but what you said before doesn't match either (gear ratio).

Glad you are happy... sorry you tore it up again. Hope it fixes easy.

I just bought that Dymond 15C 3S 1500 mAh for our UCD to try. We have it prop'ed way down due to the battery 7C 1500 we have now. Would like to "feel the power"

BTW: I also found some APC adapters at Maxx Products to mount on gearbox setups. COOL.

Finally got my bl-8 replacement (phoenix 10) from gp, i put it in the plane. It's windy out today so i'm grounded until a bit later when the winds should calm. I'm really afraid of hurting this esc with my rimfire motor. The fets look even smaller than the bl8's... I'll try it with the 9x3.8 prop, i flew that one many times without any problems on the bl8 so by all logic it should be ok, it was on the 8x6 that the meltdown occured. I guess an 8x6 draws more amps than the 9x3.8 you tell me... I have a 8x4 apc e but i think that may be a little low on the thrust side. Should work well for my potensky cobra (still on delivery)

Also, to prevent overheating i mounted it on the outside left of the fuselage, wires passed between the cowl and the cockpit, wires poke into a hole in the cockpit. I sort of formed the excess shrinkwrap on the esc to form a air scoop and the fets are mounted outside so they are not insulated by the mounting tape or foam. Hope all goes well. I'm getting paranoid, I really should get an amp meter.

aflipz,

That 9x3.8 will load up the system more than the 8x6... be careful. Diameter has a bigger effect than pitch on prop sizing. I just ran numbers on it, and at the same rpm with those 2 props, the 9x3.8 loads up 7% more than the 8x6. The 8x4 will suck bigtime...

thank's! That's funny though, i was able to run down full 3s2100 packs not caring about throttle management with the 9x3.8 but the 8x6 did it in within minutes!

Yeah the 8x4 would suck on this plane. I did a <<ghetto thrust test>> using realy sophisticated sensors (aka my fingers) and it doesn't want to climb straight up like the 9x3.8 or the 8x6 but on a 12oz or less rtf plane it should be pretty nice and easy on the packs no?

tell me if i'm wrong, the 8x6 should thrust just a bit less than a 9x3.8 but be able to fly at higher airspeeds due to its higher pitch, is this correct?

Eehhhh... I don't know for sure, but I don't think so. Thrust results in speed... simple as that. More thrust means faster. Both unload as the plane gains velocity, so I doubt there is some magic to more pitch on a smaller diameter. True, the prop may turn faster with smaller diameter, but the smaller diameter bites less air.

Play with this... Thrust Calulator

Right, to the point where air travelling through the prop can no longer be accellerated by the prop because even if spinning at max motor rpm the air is still going faster than the prop is attempting to push it at.

I'm sure i read about this principle somewhere. This probably doesn't apply to aircraft that has as much drag as the ucd though...

We finally went out and got a flight in with the new Dymond COOL S 4200 setup, ran it with a TP1320 on a APC 9x3.8 prop, pulling 13.6A. All I can say is WOW! Was windy at dusk, really a little too windy to fly, but we have been waiting so long to get her up, I couldn't wait any longer. Took off on high rates, flying REALLY nice, and making low slow passes into the wind and pulling it verticle WOT, DAMN this thing is really strong now, and WAY more quiet that the stock setup.

Very pleased, and it's way under prop'ed for the TP1320 (can pull 15 amps, with 20 amp burst). It's nice having landing gear, and the design I put in is really flexible for those "hard" landings. Took it like a champ. Snaps and rolls on high rates are real quick. Downwind the wings bobble a lot, and trying to hover up high in the wind was a ****, but about 1/2 throttle, nice. Pulls out of a hover real agressivly now. Nice for recovery.

I snapped the plane REAL hard a few times, no evidence of any wing folding or odd behavior. All the bracing has made it pretty solid. Going into the wind, a slight climb and the wind gets under the wing and it goes vertical all by itself... a little frustrating, but fun. Still shaking (like doing a maiden), we have not had it up in 5 weeks or more. So little time, and so much wind. Still flying a little fast, need to adjust the ailerons to give a little flap I think. Landings are still pretty hot, and you have to jocky the throttle to keep her decent right. With only 4-5 flights, still feeling it out. It's definitly better with the lighter battery.

Got a Dymond 15C 3S 1500 mAh Lipo on the way. Should be HOT in this thing, prop it back up to 10x4.7 or better I think. Will pull 22 amps and will be monster overpowerd then, not that it needs it. The setup I flew tonight is really a good match, and should fly 16-18 minutes on the TP1320.

Anyway... this Dymond brushless gearbox rig is the sh-t. Definitly a must-have on this plane if you want MORE POWER.

how bout some pictures of the landing gear and a more ample description of your reinforcements.

By the way i flew it twice today. With the timing setting on it's lowest it flies over 25 minutes. The second outing was with a buddy who has a .40 funtana. He was having servo issues and was forced to land after a couple of minutes only.

Long story short i let him fly my plane and he loved it. He found it handles allmost as well as his funtana and was astonished by it's resistance to wind, and it was not windy at all compared to most of the flying i do. This is all with a 145 gram lipo.

He just bought a mini funtana that he hasn't yet built but has flown another before. After trying my plane and seeing several minutes of my flying he though i was more than ready for such a plane. It's quite flattering when someone with 100's of times more experience than you tells you something like that.

I love this hobby. i have to mount a bunch of led's on a plane to be able to fly at night, different colors for top+botom and front+back so i know where it's at in pitch black. Now i know this can be done at a minimal weight penalty. The ucd would be the perfect plane for that kind of thing.

p.s. i soooo want a hydro foamy!!!

Photos of UCD mod for Landing Gear. Using a 1/4 x 7/8 Balsa Block, about 2" long. Carved out one side. then laid in a cover panel with CA and sand to make it a block again, with 1/16" wire hand-bent, tight fit, but removable. Cut a deep slot in fuse, and picked out the foam with tweezers till it was deep enough. Used Gorilla Glue to fill gaps and lock it in. Solid as a rock.

Dubro ultra-lite foam 1-1/2" wheels. Very flexible setup and seems to help bring the CG down to make the balance more axial on the prop-wing centerline. With the battery well above CG, it can make a plane funny in rolling stunts. Hit Real Hard once tonight, no problem, bounded up and didn't even bend the gear. Only reinforcements are two side CF bars up front, and one down the keel to the tail skid (Dubro). No tail-wagging here, and I'm sure the side bars saved the front end in that bad yard-dart stunt we had on maiden day on the buddy box.

i'm even more tempted to cut out the battery bay's bottom and fabricating a balsa frame/battery holder lower down in the fuselage. I would make a light balsa rectangular frame glued to the remaining foam cores fore and aft aswell as the sides of the fuse. this frame would have two brackets to hold a thin plywood plate on wich the battery would hold with velcro. or i could just make a balsa "battery coffin" with no top and do the same as i would with the frame. I feel i have to add something for strength if i cut into that foam core, it's definitely there for a reason.

Any opinions?

p.s. i did another wing surgery today, if you squeeze lightly about 1 inch aft of your leading edges and feel the ribs mushing down and foam pieces rubbing together it's time to get out the #11 exacto and slice the affected parts open to glue those ribs back together, glue the stitches nice and voila! better than new.

This is a plane that gets seriously hurt but just won't die if you give it a chance. i'm really happy to have it in my hangar, it'll allways be ready to pull out when my other planes fail me.

i want planes, faster ones and lots of em! lipo packs, chargers, servos, esc's motors... someone start a telethon for me or something.

Here's my latest update and some pictures finally at 20 flights so far...

Seriously bent it a few times from hitting the ground repeatedly( ). Nothing a little hot glue can't fix. I'm very pleased with the power setup, Himax 4200Kv, 4.1:1 gear, APC 10x4.7SF prop. I've been playing in the ever present wind low and slow, having a blast! Have had several hinges come unglued, and the elevator servo came loose on me last night at about a foot off the ground. Made for a rapid landing, pretty neat looking though. The motor mount stick is working loose again, I wish they would have buried it a little farther back into the fuselage. Other than that, it's holding up very well, and is taking all the abuse I can throw at it and more. Haven't been able to do any (vertical)tail touches yet due to drifting in the wind, but have dragged both the top and bottom of the rudder in slow harriers.

I like the landing gear setup, Tman. Mine is green duct tape.

Here's some pictures... Isn't that a s*** eating grin in the first picture?
