I am looking into getting the K&B for power because of the cool muffler you got. Also, where did you order the fiberglass partrs from. I would love to not have to make them or build them up if possible.

Thanks!

Andrew

Sounds like you're making great progress Andrew. Can't wait 'til you post some pics. The short pipes are custom fit, so you can get them sized to whatever engines you go with. They aren't specific to K&B. I got the fiberglass parts from Fiberglass Specialties. The exit nozzles and wheel nacelles fit very well. There were some gaps with the wheel nacelles, but nothing that couldn't be fixed.

Paul

Paul,

Thank you for the link for the fibeglass parts. I have been in contact with Dub Jett. He can probably fit those pipes to the OS46 if I sent him the engines. However, he has them for the K&B already. The K&B are also lighter by almost 3 ounces for the pair. That means that much less counter weight in the nose. I am still thinking on those, though it will be some time before I get them. Thanks again!

Andrew

Most of the recent progress centered around the wing saddle. First, the wing hold-down bolts were installed. Then I fixed the gap between the wing and the saddle using filler material. After that, I made and installed the 1/64" ply shelves for the fillets above the wing. I started the fillets using balsa saw dust and dope, but it was requiring too much dope. I switched to using thinned-out wood glue, which worked out fairly well and had the added advantage of letting me do the work in the house instead of in the garage (which was still cold at the time)! The fillets are still a little hard to sand smooth, so I'll add a layer of regular balsa filler to fill in the gaps.

I had a little bit of a setback when I went to buy the fans for my K&B .45's. I found out that you can't get fans anymore for the old models which have the carburetor on the front. I'm back to my original plan of using new OS .46 VX-DF engines. I'll have to save my pennies for a while. I went ahead and got the Turbax 46 fans so I could get the installation going. Finally, I got the Perry pumps.

'til next update.
Paul

Looking good Paul. Keep it up man. How much wood did you go through on the fillets?

Hi Doug,

I used a bunch, I can tell you that. Basically, I ground up much of my scrap balsa using a sanding wheel on my table saw. The dry volume is probably cut nearly in half after it's wetted with the diluted glue, if that helps.

Paul

W. O. W. !!

I'm totally new to RC ( as anything other than a spectator ). My litle brother ( Big Brother Org ) and I have been reviving an old plane so I joined these forums. The A-10 is by far my favorite aircraft so I did a search on here to see if anyone ever thought of making one. Holy Schmokes, Batman! This is an INCREDIBLE build you have going, MDParsh! I'm glad I'm a total newb or it would be very hard to resist trying to make one myself. I know my limitations and am not about to surpass them... yet.

Wonderful thread with great pics and conversation(s). I'll just sit back and live vicariously through you.

My hat's off to FLYPUCK and you others who are also working or have completed A-10 builds. They all look great.

Hi BEP,

Thanks for taking time to look over my project, and for your comments. While I wouldn't recommend this for a beginner, there isn't any one aspect of this build that is particularly difficult. Many of the things that I fretted the most over ended up being fairly easy to do. I think the biggest problem is that it's just a major undertaking in that there's lots to do. Not that many years ago I wouldn't have had the patience. As you can see, I've been taking my time on this, just plodding along and getting things done when I can.

I've been working on details lately and will post some new pictures soon. I ended up running parallel posts here on RCU and on my web site, but there are more of the early shots there. Here's the link:

Thanks again,
Paul

Progress report...

Even though it doesn't show up in photos that well, I glassed the entire fuselage.

I made the following items:
HUD
Airflow smoothing strakes (temporarily mounted on sides of fuselage in front of wing)
Pave Penny laser seeker pod (mounted temporarily)
AN/GAU-8 Avenger gattling gun (also installed temporarily)

I mounted the following:
Ejection seat
Pilot to ejection seat
Canopy
Weapons pylons

Thanks,
Paul

Edit: Added photo.

Paul,
The gun looks great!!! My first thought was that it looks heavy, but you will probably need gobbs of nose weight anyway. Very cool!!!

This entire project is coming together nicely.

If I were to get me a kit cut, when could you start on mine?
