Paul, Don't worry about an engine out situation. In fact it's fun to throttle up and down one engine out and watch the hog yaw! It just sits there wagging back and forth with out dropping a wintip!
Hi Dean,
With the engines so close together, I wasn't overly concerned about an engine-out situation. I'm sure the twin fins and rudders add a great deal of stability as well.

The naked lady...
Well, I couldn't resist another mock-up before she goes into the paint booth. Plus, this gave me an opportunity to check the weight. If the bathroom scale--and my wife, who says the scale is always off by ten pounds--are to be believed, she weighs about 7 or 8 pounds (the plane, not my wife). Of course, in the real world, that would put it at about 17 or 18 pounds less the two motors, radio gear, counterweight and paint. I guess it's just about right.
In addition to the mock-up, I worked on a few more details. I made and attached the two APU exhaust vents on the sides of the rear fuselage as well as the air conditioning inlet/outlet vent on the top of the fuselage between the engine nacelle pylons.

Very nice Paul. What paint scheme are you going for?
Hi Billy,
I don't know the official designation, but I was just planning on basic military gray. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to use stencils for the markings or get a set of decals. There's a link in a previous post to a source of decals, but they're for 1/6th scale, so they might be a bit too large. Still, I think I'd rather go with the decals.

What scale do you estimate your model to be? You might be able to get some generic nomenclature from promark.
The George Miller A-10 is 1/9th scale. A 12" marking at 1/6th scale would be 2" and at 1/9th scale 1.3". It's probably not enough of a difference to worry about. Mine is really a stand-off scale model. I took a quick look at ProMark. They could have what I need. Thanks for the lead.

Paul,
If you want a paint scheme, I have three warthog books. They have all of the particulars about the camo paterns that the warthog actually wore. I could scan some and e-mail them to you if you want.
BTW, the plane looks great. I have not had much of a chace to work on mine ;-(

Well, it's been a while since my last update, but I have not been idle! The fuselage, wing and all control surfaces have now had two coats of primer, both of which were sanded down to the fiberglass cloth. All but the fuselage have now had their final coat of primer. I added panel lines to the fuselage using 1/16" chart tape, the thinnest I found locally. The fuse is now ready for its final coat of primer, after which I'll sand down to the tape and remove it. I added a few panel lines to the wing, which I'll have to paint over as well. I almost skipped making the panel lines, but if the final result looks as good as the preparation, I'll be glad I went to the trouble. Just before painting, I added the air scoop below the gun barrel.
On a side note, I get lots of visitors to my web site, most of whom find their way there searching for info on A-10 models. I have had the pleasure of hearing from a number of "Hawg drivers" and A-10 mechanics, some of which were stationed in Iraq. It's a real pleasure to hear from these guys! One of them had a good-natured beef with me, though. It seems that in my mock-up I placed Mavericks on weapons stations that just weren't meant to carry them. So, in the interests of scale accuracy, only stations 3 and 9 on the A-10 can carry Mavericks. In my mock-up I had them on stations 4 and 8, next to the fuselage.
Thanks for checking in on my progress.
Paul

Hi David,
I wish I could do the maiden in Ocala! That's a great field and a good club. I miss it. Regarding the A-10, you could always build one with a turbineconversion in mind, but start out with ducted fan! I don't know enough about turbines to know what would have to be done differently, but with your own experience and the other jet flyers in the club, I'm sure you could do it.
