I am going to be changing my Sig Cub over to Robart Gear...Would it be better for me to open it upon the bottom to put the support in for the anchor pointsas they will probably be close if not under the fuselage sides..I am going by the ones on my BUSA Cub...The outside blind nuts are partially under the fuselage sides...I am wondering if that is the case with the Sig instlation also...Do you need to replace the front Gear mounting plate or just fill in the slot where the present gear fits in ? On the back it will mean epoxying in a 1/4 " ply anchor plate maybe 2.5 " wide and reinforced with tri stock..Thanks for any advice you can give me on this switch over before I start...I am just not sure if I should go at this from the bottom or the top...I could gut the plane take all the servos ect out and then put in the support for the gear or go at it from the bottom...

I used the existing in mine. for the inside outside blind nuts that are under the sides I trimmed one side of the blind nut off and then a ground out of the side just enough to get the nuts in place

Got the hatches boxed in. Wasn't hard, took about 30 minutes. I just took off the old capstrips on the ribs of the hatch is attached to and made new ones notching them out for the wood glued to the ribs. I glued the edge of the capstrip to the rib instead of the centers as I had before. A few seconds at the sander to narrow the hatch covers and all was done.

That looks perfect!

Page 100!  That's a lot of posts.

Maybe I should build a clipped wing.

I'm starting to put some of the gear in the Cub. I didn't but the top on the forward of the fuse behind the firewall yet so I'd have plenty of room to plan this out.

Pic 1: Rails for the shelf
Pic 2: another view
Pic 3: The shelf for the forward fuse. I'll secure it to the rails with 4-40 screws and the blind nuts you see
Pic 4: Servo tray for the throttle and choke servos
Pic 5: servo try in place - I plan to bolt it to the tray from underneath once I finalize placement
Pic 6: gas tank will go next to the servos

Neddy191 just my 2 cents but one item that I'm not fond of it your firewall. If it was me I would have it extend out and be glued to the ply sides of the fus.

In hindsight that would have been better but its done now. I do have it pinned out through the balsa and into the ply side with dowels and the tristock on the inside for what thats worth. I think it'll be ok but if the firewall comes off, so be it. This is my first "real" build so its been an excellent learning process. If it falls apart I'll just have an excuse to build another one.

Neddy laminate a 1/8 ply to the front of the 1/4 extended to the outer sidewall ply. Where the 1/8 meets the sidewall ply put a try stock there. That balsa will not hold up to the vibration of a engine. I would be surprised if it lasted one flight.

I certainly don't want my build to be destined for failure and moreso don't want to have it be a risk to injure anyone.

Pic 1: 1/8" ply firewall doubler, holes cut for standoffs so the engine remains in the original position

Don't forget the tristock. 1/4 or 3/8 will be fine.

The firewall looks good with the doubler.

You could also add some fiberglass cloth to the inside of the firewall, along the side joints.  It would never come out then.

SDP  I like the fiberglass cloth idea.  Extra strength and light weight.  I also glassed over the nose joint on mine.

PS   SDP, I am in your country for another week.  Looking to buy a townhouse or condo.  Used to live here for 39 years, now just visit in the winter.  Do you fly at Usery Pass?  I used to belong to that club.

I do fly at Usery Pass, but it may be in a different location than you remember.  Club is Arizona Model Aviators.

It was at spook hill, now it is at Meridian Road and Brown Road in the flood control area.

Here is a little video showing the field:

Great video.  Yes I flew at Spook Hill, but I was at the new site last year.  I did not fly as I had no room for planes.  I might be able to free up some time to get there next W/E.  We have been very busy.

I am about ready to install radio and cover my CW Cub, but there is plenty of detail to do.

Gee, has anybody been working on their Cubs lately?  Not much activity here.

Work has been rather busy for me lately so I haven't had a whole lot of time to work on the Cub.  I did get the instrument panel complete, or at least complete enough.  It really depends on how far one wants to go, right?

Anyway, I used a panel that was given to me (thanks Anthony!), but the outside two instruments were to large.  So I went and measured full size Cub, scaled it down and drew my own in AutoCAD using a scaled down photo next to it as a reference.  I then had two rings made at work out of steal (I had originally wanted aluminum but steal is what I got).  I printed the two completed drawings onto photo paper, glued them to balsa, then cut and sanded them to shape.

Here's a couple photos.  You'll notice the in the first one the Oil Temp/Pressure got messed up by the glue I used, so I used that as a test piece.

Yeah, at least the instruments.  Thanks again Anthony!

Now on to covering!  I'm starting with the right wing panel.  I have to fix the little dings and do some final sanding and cleaning before I start covering.  I'm getting plenty of expert advice from Robert and VJ, thanks guys!  But before I start, my stomach says it's hungry, so I'll take a 3:00 lunch break first.

Take care,
David

It does not sound as if you are as dedicated to this hobby as most. Maybe you should give that thing to someone more capable, ME!!

Gee wiz guys!  Remember this is my first time so take it easy!

Okay, I'm learning some more here.  I've got the bottom of the right wing panel covered.  I'm going to do the bottom of the left panel before doing the top so that I can do a little lateral balancing first.  Kind of forgot to do that..

Some other things I learned:
Cover around the protruding parts first.  That would have made things so much easier and look better around the strut mounts.
Cutting a straight line with a razor ain't as easy as it looks.  I've got a few crooked lines and some jagged lines that need to be cleaned up
This stuff is easy to work with!  Going around the wing tip, even easier than Monokote!  I love it!
One last thing (that I can think of anyway); Anthony, you're right about the opacity.  I can see the wood grain right through this stuff.  But hey, it's my first build and I'm learning.  Besides that... I WANT TO GET THIS THING FLYING!!!

Alright, here are some pics of my progress.

David they are taking it easy on you...LOL

Very nice job, I knew you could do it,  it's not as hard as it looks.  There are tricks that you can learn to get straighter cuts with your razor blade.  Are you going to clear coat it after you do your taping?
