I do hate how translucent the stuff is. Drove me nuts. If I wasn't repairing the Waco the Cub would be getting stripped and recovered.

Bottom of port wing complete!  I tried some other techniques like putting down a layer around the strut mounts first (1st pic).  I also got my lines straighter this time (2nd pic).

I'm still learning a lot from this too.  Some are common sense though, like make sure the correct side of the Solartex is down and if you get a bunch of sticky stuff from the covering on your iron, make sure to turn it off and let it cool before licking it clean!  Not really!  I did try to iron down a small piece upside down though.  More?  How about when using single edge razors, make sure the sharp side is down before push down with your finger!  Yep, I was wondering how that blade could have gotten so dull already...  it wasn't!

More lessons learned later.  For now, here are some photos:

Wont be long now. 

Remember, the fun of kits is learning a bunch of building techniques.  (The razor one could have been left out though!  Ouch, dont do that again)  I too use a raw razor blade to cut covering.

Thanks SDP.  I hope it won't be too long.  Don't know that I would want to stretch it out another year!

Hey!  I almost forgot this lesson!  When rolling out your Solartex on a short make-shift cutting board/work bench, always make sure you have a "chalk" at the end so the roll doesn't fall off and roll half way across your hanger, going through the dirt and dog hair and such.  What a mess!

Status: offline 		Looks really good that definetly doesn't look like your 1st time.

I would recommend sealing the covering with a clear coat once you are finished. Will help secure the edges down and will make cleanup easier after a day of flying.

Status: offline 		Thanks guys.  I'm not expecting to get much more done today.  Today was a flying day, although that was cut a bit short too.  Nothing tragic, so don't worry (or get your hopes up...), just a broken clevis when I had to take the wing off.

If I don't post anymore tonight, then I'll say it now:  HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!    and enjoy your tax hikes.....

hi, sorry i didnt see your post sooner.. i believe i used the os mount and added a 1/4" block (in the shape of the mount) to the fiewall.
the twin is really a nice match for the plane!

Status: offline 		I had to redesign how I'll set up my throttle and choke servos. I originally had them side-by-side but that barely left me enough room for the tank. I'll put them one in front of the other which should give me plenty of room.

Status: offline 		Ah, that's a good idea Neddy.  I put the throttle servo in a box that would slide onto a T mount and the choke servo above it in the top if the nose box (for lack of a better word).

Things were a bit slow for me today.  It was hard getting started this morning and I didn't get out to the hanger until after 1PM!  Then the weather was sooooo nice that I had to take my little Handyman down to the school and did a little flying.

When I did get to work, I started covering the top of the right wing when I realized I forgot to put in a latch spring clippy thingy to hold the window open.  I started taking the covering down before it hit me.  I tried to find the right material to make one but haven't had any success yet.  Anybody have a good idea for a window holder openner thingy?

Status: offline 		I had a full scale J-3 with a window holder on it that was very simple. Here is the version I made for my 1/4 scale Hanger 9 J-3 that works very well. I just bent a piece of 4/40 size servo rod bent to shape and 2 metal straps on a piece of plywood.

Status: offline 		Hey Eddie, that's a good idea too.  But as I think about this some more, I might just go with the magnet idea.  It would keep things clean, nothing protruding from the wing and nothing to fail.  It may not work to keep the window open in flight, but then that's not totally necessary for me anyway, I'll probably keep it closed for flying.

It's not done yet though so I'll keep the idea in mind until I can get around to it.  Like Anthony, I'm back at work again so the fun is severely diminished!

Status: offline 		David, I do not keep it open for flying, just on the ground. It might work for flying but I wouldn't try it. The one on our full size J-3 looked similiar to this one and we flew it with the window open. Anything just to keep the window up to hook up the aileron extensions and also my switches are inside also for radio and engine. I see you have the fancy plugs on yours.

Good Luck on the covering, looking great! Can't wait to see another yellow J-3 in the air. Keep the pictures coming. We like'em!

I would use Nelson Hobbies Clear Coat. If you are flying with glow then you need to add the cross-linker to make it glow proof.

Personally I would start with natural or white Solartx then paint the color I wanted and skip the clear coat.

I'm still working away on the cub. We had family staying with us over the holiday so I didn't get as much done as I would have liked but she's getting there.
-The wings and ailerons are built and sanded.
-Horizontal stab and elevator are covered and hinged.
-Landing gear are built.
I couldn't get the wires hot enough to solder so I used my MIG welder. It's not the prettiest job, but the wood and fiberglass hide my sins.
-The DLE-30 is mounted on the fuse and the top nose is "buttoned up".
By mounting the engine at an angle, cutting off one corner of one head fin and grinding a smidge off the stock muffler, I got it to fit in the stock cowl.
 
Still have to build the struts, install the servos, mount the ignition module, etc... but I'm getting very close to being out of parts in the box.
