Spicecrap,

I have a Parks 450 I plan to run on an 18 oz plane. I will be using a 3 cell lipo-1500 battery. What would be the best prop to use for fun flying - no 3d.

Also I have ordered a AXI 4120/14 for a 6.5 lb. plane. I would like to use either a 5 cell lipo 2100 or a 6 cell lipo 2100 battery. Any prop suggestions for this motor?

Thanks for the help.

Rick

hi, my simulator predicted an APC10x6E to be the best match on paper, it should be very close to the best in the real plane also from my own experiences. it predicts 16.5 amps at full throttle sitting still, but after takeoff it becomes about 11 to 12 amps, and when you throttle back for average sport flying it will be about 4 to 6 amps which should be about 25 to 30 Min's flight time.
i had the same setup in one of my planes except i used a 3 cell 2100 apogee pack, and the plane was about 22 ounces, i got about 35 Min's sport flying.
sorry i don't want to predict on the second setup you asked about because i don't have real experience in something that size, and i don't want to steer you in the wrong direction with assumptions

good luck with it, JOHN

Thanks John. I plan to buy apogee 2100 anyway so the info is great. Fly safe.

Here are some pix of the motor mount I used to mount an Eflite 480 1020kv in mine. I have a Phx 25 ESC and 1500 mah pack.

I've got the park 480 in mine runnin apollo 24 speed controller...axis 2100ma 3 cell lipo's....ive got 4.

super fun plane to fly.

Ive tried 10x7, 10x5, 9x9, 9x7.5 and 9x6 slofly props. The 9x7.5 gives me close to 20 minutes flying time at 3/4 throttle.

Just built the mini sportster myself. Using an Eflight 400 brushless with a 3 cell 2100 Mah LIPO, and an 8 X 6 prop. It is a screamer. Rarely fly it more than 1/2 throttle. Also cut a small 1/16 X 1/2" groove in the bottom of the rudder and installed a wire and small wheel I found at the hobby store. Works very well steering on the ground if you keep full up elevator while taxiing.

Just started getting hits while flying above 1/3 throttle. Pretty scarey and cant decide if I have a receiver going bad. It's a JR micro 6 channel I have used for years. Getting throttle and servo hits all of the sudden when not expected. Using a 42 amp ESC. Any ideas anyone?

Like your sporster. Hope it flies well for you.

Do you know if that's a full range receiver? I have had expeirence with Futaba R124 and R156F micro receivers, both are rated for up to 500 ft., but in my experience I only get about 200ft range before noticing servo hits and glitches like you, in my stock Mini Sportster and Mini Slinger. Dunno if that's what your problem is, considering how you may be flying farther now with your faster plane?

I got the batteries from
www.batteryspace.com
great batteries and incridibly cheap prices, especially if bought loose. I got enough NIMH 2/3A cells for $25 to solder up 3 8 cell packs.

I'm hooked on the mini-sportster, too. I've been getting my NIMH packs on eBay. Found a guy who's selling 8-cell packs, 2 for 27.00 (including freight). I could have probably gotten them $2.00 cheaper, but I used the buy-it-now feature. I just have to solder on my connectors and I'm up and running. These are actually sold as Airsoft Gun batteries, but they're made from the standard 2/3A cell and are rated at 1200 mah. I've been real happy with these packs. Now if I can just remember to set the field charger for NIMH and not NiCad . . . .

I have been checking out different options for the mini sportster conversion.....the best solution is totally the easiest.....E-flight makes a stick motor mount that attaches directly to the firewall...0 modifications....I had a 400xt sitting around with a e-flight stick mount ( to the motor) mount....stuck it on...3 minutes total....strapped in a 1250 11.1 lipo, 1.7 apc slow flyer and I was off flying...flies great...low cost...no hassle....dave

I plan to buy a mini sportster and install a Hi Max 2816-0890 in it as I have that from a previous experiment. Is this too much engine?
Should I consider going up to the super sportster. TNX

that size himax will be perfect for the MSS, it would be too small for the bigger sportster though.

have fun, john

Hi. I'm new to this brushless thing and on a tight budget, we firefighters don't make a hole lot of money. My question is : I found a "good" deal on a motor and sped controller on graysonhobby.com. I just need to know if it will work on the mini supersportster I'll be buying very soon. It's a Dynam A22-15M 1050kv,6-16A(22A Max) with a 25 amp ecs. all for $61.99. Is this a good deal, should I use a gear box and what size, and what size lipo should I get. I'm wanting to do everything this mss can handle. Please help!!!!!!

hi,
i only buy name brand equipment now, (because i have been very dissapointed in the past) but i cant personally say anything bad about what you have mentioned. as far as the specs it looks like the right size for the MSS. so as long as it doesnt malfunction it should be fine, although its a really big plus if you go with a controller like i use (castle creations phoenix) because then you can program how it acts with things like amount of brake, if any, and type of cutoff when battery is low, and timing, and amount of voltage to activate the cutoff. out of all the settings, to one that is most important to me is being able to set the voltage for any cutoff point i want (i have tried the cheaper ones that auto select, and they miscalculated if the battery wasnt charged exactly the same every time). i prefer to set mine to 9.5 volts instead of the normal 9 volt, this gives me a tad more warning before the pack is out so i can still have enough power to turn around and land were i want to rather than ditching it as soft as possible and hoping it didnt hit anything coming in, lol. anyway i understand if your on a budget, ive been there too, and this hobby can add up quite a bit. but if your budget can swing it there are big advantages to getting better equipment. i have tried about 6 diff motors in my MSS (i like experimenting) my all time favorite is the hacker A30-28S, phoenix 35 controller. i found them to be a great savings if you buy them together at northeast sailplane. just in case you want to check out the combo here is the page: $129.95

http://www.nesail.com/detail.php?productID=3573

as far as the other questions, no gear box, use a 3 cell lipo (thunder power 1320, or 2100 will work) preferably the 2100. sry to say but same thing with cheap batteries THEY ARE JUNK!!! here i have to say for sure from experiance! buy thunder power 1st, or you will be throwing those other batteries away and then buying the thunder power 2nd anyway.

john

ok, i just seen your next post, you must have entered it while i was typing the response. i dont know the specs on that one, but to give you a general idea what i have found to be good for the MSS is a motor with a kv of like 1100 to 1200 range and amps in the range of 9 to maybe 14 or so.

if its 150 peak watts, it will be just a little week, but ok for sport flying, just not extream. it will still be more than the stock setup though.

also keep in mind that the MSS is more of a sport flyer anyway, since it has wing dehidral, and semi simetrical wing, and very small ailerons. if you think you may want a better arobatic plane maybe get a model that has no dehidral and fully simetrical wing, they are imo easier to fly anyway since they fly straighter and in any direction that you point it. my new favorite is the new formosa II, but its a much bigger plane and needs much more power, so it ends up costing more. if you want something the size of the MSS maybe a mini katina, or mini funtana. dont get me wrong i love my MSS too, but it just doesnt handle as good as the fully simetrical planes do. but its a good low wing plane to train on.

Thanks spice for the info. This helps me alot. 20 years ago I was use to 45-60 size glow airplanes. I'm just now getting back into the hobby and decided to go with electric.I have a E-starter twin and the ever so fine slow stick. I'm needing a plane that I can get the hang of flying and landing a low wing plane. I was told the mss would be a good choice, what do you think?

the biggest question is, do you know your right and left without thinking about it it yet? if you do then you can easily fly a fully simetrical winged plane without any dehidral in the wing. and if thats the case i would not recommend the MSS. if you need more flying time to get to that point then you can either fly the e-starter more until you get to that point, or buy the MSS as the next step up. i really feel that planes like the formosa, mini funtana, mini katana, etc (full simetrical, no dehidral planes) fly much easier than the MSS, its just that you will need that dehidral in the plane until you get that left-right part down pat. my recommedation would be keep flying what you have until you get to that point then jump right up to any full simetrical straight wing plane that you like. i too flew a slow stick, then a e-starter (single motor) then the MSS, then formosa, then formosa II. looking back now, the best choice for me would have been 1st e-starter (until i got my left-right correct) then go right to the formosa II. i still fly all them, but my favorite by far is the formosa II. i still want to get the katina to replace my MSS with, so maybe i will try that next to see how it flies.

john

He wouldn't make a good "Crabby Spice" would he

Hi guys, I just got a MSS and I'm thinking about using an AON T2815-3002 can inrunner on it but I want to get a Cobri gearbox since they are durable.

Can anyone help me select appropiate gearing??

And do you think this motor is a good choice or is it overkill??

Thanks!
