I used the kit's pre-cut parts. But since I altered the plans to fit the fan, I was not sure how that would effect the CG. Moved the battery forward about an inch and it was perfect, that is until the ESC died...

Ok Vicman, I finally got a couple hours free this evening to start patching up my F18. I need to find a block of foam to make the nose cone. Any ideas? Gluing all those pieces from the kit was lame; it took way too long and does not come out smooth because of the glue between all the layers.

I have 2"thick blue foam. By using it I only need to laminate one pc of thinner stuff to the bottom and I get the size needed. You may try the hardware stores or a construction company, I have seen it as thick as 3". Or you may try EPP, it is commonly used as shipping fill.

everything keeps pointing back to mega motors so I may as well start saving for a pair of 16/15/3's... now for figuring out the esc(s?) and the dreaded LiPo(s? gulp!) bill... at least it should all be reclaimable for the next project.
if nothing else, this is turning into one twisted, mis-shaped and potentially expensive "experiment". looks like (in CAD anyway) a snake that swallowed an egg from the side. it will be a standoff scale... standoff a few hundred feet and squint through fog, that is.
16oz. foam coffee cups and a chisel sharpie make some decent rear nozzles.

next one will definitely have dual 480 fans (F-15 "active" and after that, a simple ONE-FAN JSF.

hmm, I wonder about these...
http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJAB4&P=7
has the 2.3mm shaft already and I can get 2 for a bit more than the price of 1 Mega... wonder if the 4700 is rpm or kv? looks like a misprint...
arrgh... the search continues...

I used one of these Typhoon motors on the MiniFan480. Near half price as Mega. Quality on Mega seems better but if these hold up well price is good. Looks like they are out of stock on the 2 and 3 turn motors at this time. http://www.warbirds-rc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=HETT-EDF3W&Category_Code=NEW

I should just learn how to make my own parts... those diy motors are kinda cool, and cheap! I wonder about fan units though, what processes? injection molding? carbon fiber layups?
I would eventually like to make a dual fan unit that runs off of one motor... I'm lacking the skills at present.
I'm just surprised at the lack of build threads on dual edf conversions to these 3df park jets... thought there would be more...

if the GWS plan fizzles, I'm thinking of WeMo's HW 609's for the F-15.
Savage Light sells a Sukhoi CY(SU)-27 that uses twin minifan 480s, can ROG and has retracts... that's what I'm after... only in a FA/18, F15 and eventually a JSF(F-35B)

here are a few comparison pics for the "super"sizing...note the straight shot CF rod on the new wing

I wonder if I can give the pieces bluecor depth and assemble them in 3d before doing it for real...

All major repairs done! Debating if I fly or paint first. Only repair left to do is to replace a rocket rail and it's ready to fly.

@ $65 a pop, what about Ultrafly A/30/29 brushless motors?
They have a /24 which is 2400kv and the /29 which is 2900kv... The higher RPM's of the /29 should help without overstressing the GWS impellers...
Is that motor in MotoCalc? (It even has the 2.3mm shaft, exact replacement for an EM400... ). max curremt = 16 amps, max watts = 180... any suggestions for ESC(s)/LiPo(s)?

No time to fly yet so I painted and added a little more detail last couple of evenings. Her she is painted up and ready to go! Maybe this Sunday I can get a few minutes to fly her again. Antonio, look familiar? I'm sure this will be much more visible for my sorry eyes than the Blue Angels colors.
