The Piedmont instructions said to balance the Brio at 8 inches back from the L.E.at the root.Mine indicates tail heaviness at that point. It is the standard version.
Battery is at the firewall. Stab servos are Futaba 9650.
Has anyone had the balance point come out right on the money?
Has anyone flown a Brio that is a bit tail heavy?
Mine is going to be about 10.75 lbs and I hate the thought of adding nose weight. It takes so much to move the balance point even a little forward.
I hate lead!

Heresy to some, I suppose, but why not fly it, do the usual C.G., incidence, downline, checks &c., then decide?
Modern pattern designs won't crash with the wrong C.G.
They won't fly right, but they won't crash.

Dave,

The best remedy for that problem is to change your rudder to a built up balsa or foam rudder. I did mine in just one day. Not only did I save 3oz but my CG is right on the money.

I changed my rudder to balsa/foam right at the start.

I wonder if many who are running an OS 140 RX with ES pipe are having the same problem.? Certainly I can fly it with no problem as is but it is annoying knowing it is either going to be tail heavy,or biting the bullet and adding lead to the nose.

I see no point in deliberately flying it tail heavy,so will at least get it close. Then I can start the trimming, tweaking process. Like I said,I hate lead! Either front or back.:-)

How tail heavy is it? Less than a 1/2 inch? More? Are you using the lightest possible tail wheel assembly? Half inch or less, I'd fly it as is and see how it feels.

Before going to any trouble to adjust components to make it balance differently add the lead and see how it feels at the recommended 8" from leading edge. You may find you need it even more nose heavy, or you may find you want to move the CG back from the recommended which would just involve removing some lead.

Once you get the plane balanced to your liking THEN determine what needs to be changed to be able to remove the lead.

BTW, I personally would not fly a new plane tail heavy. Better to fly over 11 lbs. at a reliable balance point than to fly tail heavy.

Can you guys who have a Brio post your weight. Mine is a tad over 5 kgs but it is due to the paint which added 500 grams(too much paint, clear alone 2 coats). I'm returning the fuse for sanding and repainting and at no cost since its a back job. I'm hoping to reduce the 500 gram paint job to something like a 200 grams. What's your average paint job wt in your Brio's? Thanks.

You should be able to do the fuse paint at or under 200 grams.

On the other hand, if your "a tad" over 5kg, can you find somewhere else to shed the "tad"? Re-doing the paint seems like a lot of work for a tad.
