I'm curious, what are the advantages of a belt drive tail rotor over your conventional gear driver rotor????

I would say belt because inline with the gears would be more efficient(vs drag of belt) as opposed to 90 degree meshing with pinions on shaft drive, so take away the drag of the belt vs the 90 degree crossovers you may end up the same as far as efficiency is concerned but i would think the belt less likely to strip the gears .
The new ikarus hel "viper" has an interesting belt drive system http://www.ikarus-modellbau.de/onlineshop/deutsch/index.php?lang=1

Less drive flex, sometimes called windup. Gear mesh drag from incorrect gear settings. stripping gears, broken
drive wire or carbon shaft in crash just to name a few.

A big disadvantage of belts is that they take a LOT of power to spin. I believe close to a 18% power loss turning the belt.....Big advantage ease of set up and crash costs. The belt is rarely ruined in a crash unlike a tube drive. With the power of todays engines the power loss to drive the belt is not that big as issue.
