Heres a question for you guys. What company do you think makes the best Zero kit and why? I will be hunting a midsize kit. I may go up to a 80 inch or so but not sure yet. One thing I am looking for is a somewhat easy to follow kit. I dont have alot of building under my belt yet. Thanks!

Hey Vic,

Thanks for the input! I have read a few reviews on the yellow arf type, so what good things can you say about the kit? Thanks again!

If you like building, you might look for a Royal/Marutaka kit on ebay (they closed up shop last fall). They're a .60 sized plane, smaller than the yellow and all balsa. The Royal/Marutaka kits have a reputation of being chalanging builds and good fliers. They come with very little instructions and require a lot of shaping and sanding. I will be building their A6m5 after my next project.

GSP makes and ARF 70" Zero, World Models has an 80" ARF and Dave Platt has a short kit and plans for a 80" Zero. Ziroli and Meister have plans for larger Zeros. I think you should have plenty of building experience before trying to work off plans though. Zeros are a bit short coupled in the nose, meaning they come out tail heavy. They do fly very well. My next build will be the Platt Zero.

As for building from plans, there are kit cutters that you can order all the ribs and formers cut. Some kit cutters may even have a complete kit based on the popular plans like Ziroli, Meister and Platt.

If you are new to building, I would recommend a kit from someone like Top Flite or Skyshark. These will be easier to build and you will learn a lot from them. Everyone says that the Zeros will build tail heavy because the zero has such a short nose. Best to get some practice on a kit that you can get a lot of advice from those here on RCU.

This is why my zero is waiting in the wings. I am working on a Top Flite Spitfire and will build a Top Flite P-51B next. I want to get at least two warbird builds done before starting my Royal/Marutaka kits, the A6M5, P-38, Corsair and Skymaster. Also thinking about picking up a Royal B-25 too.

Have lots of fun whichever way you go!

Top Flite also made a Zero kit for a short period. You might be able to find one on Ebay. I can't comment on how they built or flew, possibly problems since it was offered for such a short time. I've got a .60 size Marutaka Zero kit NIB but wouldn't recommend it as they're a more challenging build than most kits. I've built their B-25 and have a second B-25 Marutaka kit I scrambled to get when I heard they were shut down. A joy to build if you're a builder. Would you consider a Val instead of a Zero? Skyshark makes a Val that would be much easier to fly and much easier to build. I'm finishing a Skyshark Val and its an excellent kit.
