Status: offline 		My son who is just getting into glow has an opportunity to buy a used OS 48 Surpass for about $50. Is this a good reliable engine? Any "issues" we should know about? Thanks

Status: offline 		Just my opinion, OK? I won't buy a used engine. I like to raise 'em from a pup, that way I have control over how they are broken in and subsequently treated. Who knows what stress this particular motor was put under? That being said, opinions are like @**holes, but in mine O.S. is good stuff.

Status: offline 		I have two used Surpass 48s that work fine. One was covered with ugly burnt castor, and had a stuck cam lifter, when I got it but it cleaned up fine. The other had been cleaned up by the seller and runs fine also.
$50 sounds like a good price if it is in reasonable condition.
I don't know of any particular issues with the engine. Mine have none.
You can still get some parts from Tower if necessary.

Engines are the one peice of used equipment I don't mind. Electonics can have hidden problems that are hard to diagnose and can lead to complete failure. Airframes can have hidden problems that can be seen without tearing off covering, etc. Engines on the other had are pretty straight forward to take apart, inspect, clean, service, and test. You can develop alot of faith in what you've got before ever flying it.

Status: offline 		I have a 48 Surpass. It runs great, never adjust the needle valve or anything. It just runs. Mine has the same needle valve/carb as a OS 52. I got it that way used. I doubt if it came that way from the factory. Its on a Slow Poke with a 12 X 5 APC.
