I have the motor and CC 25 ESC already, was hoping it would pull the Mini Funtana around ok. Looking for more low speed flying than full on 3D hovering

The Himax 2025-4200 will work great. It's just like the Park 400-4200 E-flite motor that they are recommending. Plenty of power to hover and do aerobatics.

I have the Himax 2025-4266, which is just the -4200 on a 6.6:1 gear. So far I have had nearly 60 flights on this power setup and am loving every bit of it!!! I have not moved the wings to the forward hole for better 3D, I am just having a ball with the way it is setup right now.

For power, I am using a Thunder Power 3S 1900 and have tried many prop combos. For me right now, the APC 11x7 SF is giving me great speed and fantastic pattern work!!! I can average 15 - 25 minutes of flying depending on throttle use!!

My opinion is that you will have a good time with the -4200!

Would the 2025-4200 give enough power for serious 3D, though? I thought the reccomendation was 2:1 power to weight for 3D? I have one of these motors looking for a home, too. That's why I ask.

I have been told and have proven some theories. First, with electric don't worry too much about thrust. It is important, but what most people want to key in on is watts / pound of aircraft weight.

Normally 100 watts /pound will be more than enough for decent 3D work, and 150 watts / lbs is fantastic. Now how do you figure watts; simple, take Amp draw an multiply it by Voltage. In the case of the Himax 2025-4200, it has a max of 15 Amps. Using a 3S Lipo with nominal voltage of 11.1, and multiply the max amps of the motor (15 Amps) and you get the amount of 172.5 Watts.

Now the Mini Funtana that I own weighs in at around 20 ounces. This is 1.25 lbs. Divide 172.5 watts by 1.25 lbs and the amount is 138 Watts / pound of aircraft weight!!!!!

Once you get the Watts / lbs setup right, just prop it to get the amp draw you need and for the performance you want.

Example : My Himax 2025-4266 on an APC 11x7 will draw around 14 amps at max. I am not sure what the thrust is on this setup, but it pulls the airplane through the air with authority! Now the 11x7 will give me great speed, but won't do a lot for 3D performance! For 3D you want a lower pitch speed for increased stability in hover. Now if I take an APC 12x6 my amp draw is right around 15 amps, speed is definatley rreduced but vertical is greatly increased!!!

So remember the key for electric, at least from what I have found, is to get the power system that will give you an appropriate watt/pound ratio, then prop it for the desired amp draw and performance!!!

I use the himax 2025-4200 in my MF with CC25 and like it with the APC 11x7 slofly. It hovers easily and has a better top end speed than with the 12x6 prop they give you. I wouldn't call it unlimited power but its plenty for almost everything other than maybe crazy waterfalls!

I have had loads of fun with this Himax on an Elite from Concept models, geared 6.6:1 with a variety of props. Weighs just about 1 lb. 10x 4.7 seems the best. I've learned loads of 3D moves and it's a long time since I wiped out. Very robust plane and easy to fix. But it's just started to judder and I can't correct, motor never gets going. It is firmly mounted.

any suggestions?

If your 2025 draws 14A at 11.1V then you only have 150W, that will mean a 23oz plane like the Mini Funtana will be able to just do some nice 3D but not great 3D, try the Himax 2816 outrunner, that motor on the Mini Funtana is just wonderful. The motor is 200W and will turn a 10x4.7 @ 8,200 RPM! What are you getting on the 2025 with the 6.6 gear ratio? I like to calculate performance based on prop RPM.

Hey now,
I used a Himax 2025-4200 at first, 6.6-1 gb, 12-6 APC slofly prop, 3s TP2100s. It flew very nicely as a pattern plane, but I found it woefully underpowered for decent 3D, not that I'm a great 3D pilot or anything. Yes, I could hover it with that combo, but I had the throttle so close to full I had nothing left to power out of the hover and if it started to fall off I couldn't quite get it back on step. Now that could be me or it could be the power system (prolly me )
I then replaced the system with a Mega 1516-4, Cobri gear box set at 3-1, APC 12-6E, and the same TP 2100 pack.
Now I have plenty of power. I can hover at less than half throttle and have enough power to pull back into hover even if I fall off by more than thirty degrees, it'll go straight up till I can't see it anymore, and pretty much anything I can do with a flat foamy I can pull off with my MF.
Sure the 4200 will work, but more power is better

I'm using a very similar setup: Himax 2025-4266 (6.6 gear), 12-6 APC slofly prop, 3s TP2000 pro lite. I think the power is awesome but I'm more old school, not trying that much 3D stuff. The new TP pro lite batteries have great power and low weight.

I flew one of my clubmembers plane with the himax 2025-4200 and it flew great as a pattern plane, but I would want more for 3d. If your learning 3d, you want that extra power to pull out of a failed manuever.

I'm also running my MF on a himax 2025-4266 setup. I've been using 10x7 APC's though. I'm gonna have to try the 11x7's. According to one site, they run the 2025 with 6.6 gearing and use a 12x8 prop. Gets about 38 oz. of pull. Not sure on the amps drawn though.

If you want some serious 3D power I'm running my MF with a Lehner 1020/15, TP prolite 2100 15C , cobri gearbox and APC 12x6 SF. The revs are actually more than APC recommends for a SF prop. I may switch to an E- prop. Anyhow its over 300 watts and it weighs less than the himax 2025-4200. Its really a rocket. Hovers at less than 1/4 throttle.

Hello all,

Love all the great comments and recommendations. I just purchased my MF yesterday and hope to start building it this evening. I also purchased the Himax 2816-0890, E-flite 40 amp ESC w/dual BEC, TP 1320 11.1v, I will be using the prop that came with the plane at first, see how it goes.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice on my battery and if they think I should get a larger one and if so, which one? I prefer to use TP, seem to be pretty reliable but will try others if they are worth it.

Also, any suggestions or recommendations on my setup above would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

DJ..

DJ - your battery choice might be a little small and prop too big. Try a 2100 3s pack. I dont have that motor but if its 200 watts or so you'll be at the top end of the 1320 and usually that ends up with a weak battery after awhile. I've read that the 200 watts on your motor comes with a 10 inch prop, so the 12 inch would be way too much... I'm not sure though so maybe someone else can comment...

Hello Trogdor,

Thanks for the response and the useful information. I will upgrade my choice of batteries and go with a smaller prop, I was not afraid to get the 1320 TP as it can always be used in my Blade CP Heli, which I have one in there now.

I guess another trip the LHS is in the works. I do not live all that close so I try to make plans to go at least once a week while I am in that part of town due to work. hehe....

Ok, I will just have to tell the wife that I HAVE TO GO, hehe... she will understand! I hope.. Oh wait, what is the old expression? It's easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission?

Thanks again for the response and information...

David

Shalom Roei,

I think the 2812-0850 may be just a little under powered for the Mini Funtana. If you wanted to use the 2812, there is another model that should handle it, it is the 2812-1050 which has a lot more get up and go. I do not know much about the hyperion motor to know if it will work or not. Good luck on your search for the right motor. I am using the Himax 2816 with a Thunder Power 2000 mAh battery and it fly's great.

Be Well,
Tada,
David Jennings

HI Djennings
I actually need the motor for the fliton extra which is a little lighter and I think the heavier motor will cause high wing loading.

Shalom Roei,

Then the 2812 should be fine then, just make sure you go with a 3 cell lipo with at least 2000 mAh.

Good luck and happy flying.

Btw, I have been to Tel Aviv, 2 times now and I stayed in the David Intercontinental, right across the street from the Dance place that was attacked a few years ago.

Be well,

David

I have 3 cell 1700 to try first.
I think I have talked to you in past about electrics and you told me you were in israel.
By the way, I live pretty close to this hotel.

I'm not sure why some don't think the 2025 would work well for 3d in this application.
I run this in a bunch of planes. I can use it to make a helicopter out of my (now deceased) Rambler...

If you want insane 3d, simply use a gws or comprable 5.33 gearbox with the supplied prop and like a 1900-2200 3s set up.. I doubt you will be disappointed.
I also ran a bunch of different stuff through motocalc. This is the combo I'm going to put in mine, and motocalc shows 18 peak amps and 38 oz thrust with a 12x6

Guys,

I have recently destroyed my 2025. I was using CC25 with a BEC, Align 2000 batteries, 6.6 gear ratio and APC 12X6 SF prop. Motor got too hot and stopped. Regarding HIMAX data sheet, it should handle 12x8SF prop at 15A while pulling 42.4oz.

Any idea?

You guys are crazy using those gear boxes.....they are trash. get a himax outrunner and you'll have what will seem like twice the power from that eflite 4200....i've got one in my funtana and the power is UNLIMITED....
