I have covered my Midwest Citabria with white Solartex. I am brushing on Sig Supercoat dope thinned 50% with Sig thinner. It is coming out alright but I am concerned about how well the dope will stick to the Solartex. I did some samples on scrap wood covered with Solartex and I can scrape the dope off with my thumb nail. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks
Andy

Just curious about WHY you are painting the solartex with dope. Since Solartex is a heat-shrinking material the dope isn't needed to to tighten the fabric. Is it just a case of wanting to create a shiny dope finish -- or to fill the weave. Most people seem to paint Solartex with latex and then spray with Polyurethane top coat.

I like Dope. It is completely fuel proof, very light and I have lots of experience with it over other fabrics. This is my first time using Solartex and so far I am very pleased with how it works. It only comes in a couple of colors so painting it seems normal. I would think that if latex will stick to it than dope should as well. In the past, I have always sprayed on my finishes. I hate the mess so I am experimenting with brushing it on. Seems to work pretty well.

Andy,
I recently finished a Royal P6E and used Solartex. However I used Sig nitrate dope for the initial coats over the bare fabric. I used the "natural" Solartex that does not appear to have any color finish to it. Traditionally nitrate dope is used over the polyester fabrics because a lot of other finishes will not adhere to the fabric. The Supercoat dope you used is butyrate and may not stick as well as nitrate. Unfortunately once you use butyrate nothing much can be put over it. I used Sig Supercoat over the nitrate on my Hawk.

I guess I should have put a coat of nitrate on first, but like you said, it's too late now. It's not like the stuff is just peeling off in sheets, but I thought it would be more difficult to scrape off.

Any words of wisdom for the fiberglass cowl and wheel pants?

Thanks
Andy
