I am new to electric birds. Got a few glow airplanes and love to fly. I got this old Kyosho Cessna 177 Cardinal from a friend of mine. It looks like it has a race car motor (kyosho Le Mans) in it with 7.2v 6 cell packs. The whole ship weighs 2 pounds 6 ounces. Came with a hobbico AC/DC charger/discharger. It seems to have enough thrust but not a very long endurance. Have not flown it yet. Has anyone had experience with something like this? Would appreciate any help.

Brian

Here is some more pics. How do you think it will fly? Think it needs a new battery pack, esc, and radio?

Brian,

I had one of these many years ago and truly loved it! To this day it is still one of the best flying airplanes I ever had. I flew it completely stock with 6 and 7 cell 1200 SCR Nicad cells. The 6 will definitely fly it, but 7 was nicer. The stock power system was geared and the Kyosho 9x8 prop was perfectly matched: wide thin blades and very light.

The radio system I used looks to be the same that you have. It has the Futaba receiver/speed control integrated into one unit and came with 2-3 S-133 micro servos. The radio is AM and the speed controller is frame rate, so I wouldn't bother looking at efficiency numbers, they would probably depress you. That being said, the plane routinely flew 6-10 minute flights, depending on how much acro I did, and the motor and batteries were only warm when upon landing. Depsite the lack of ailerons, it would still roll OK and flew great stall turns with a little wind. Generally, this is a Sunday flyer to cruise around with.

The fuselage is a plastic material and no glue really sticks to it, hence everything is screwed on. If you wanted to upgrade it, I'm sure you could drop in some Li-pos and a brushless motor. If you do, it should be in the name of flight time and not so much power. Overpowering this plane will likely lead to control problems in pitch, given the high lift of the wing.

I hope you enjoy it! If you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me at dwschmidt@charter.net. I don't spend a whole lot of time on this forum.

First plane I flew. Still have it. Funny but I looked at it today and decided to bring it back to life. Just got done with it 10 minutes ago and read your post. Weird.....
Anyway, it flew fine as stock, little squirley with rudder only so I decided to put ailerons and cut down on the dehedral. Will also put a brushless on it. Guess after all that it wont be much of the same plane.
Have fun,

Carl

I have one of these planes too, never been flown. I am flying a Mountain Models Magpie now, what an awesome plane. After I get to be a better flyer I will try this plane.
