Thanks for the link. I was going to call them later on today.

Now to get the article printed out; they claim it is in their archives...

Wow, am I surprised. I went into the archives to see what the plans looked like. For those of you who have (like me) never used the AMA archives what a pleasant experience! They really have done a nice job.

My favorite Sport Fliers, in order of preference, are:

Florio Flyer 40 (tuned 46)
Florio Flyer 60 (75)
GP Ulta Sport 40 (tuned 46)
GP Ultra Sport 60 (75)
Blue Movie SPAD (46, 61 or 75)
Hobbico Superstar hot rod (tuned 46)
Hobbico Avistar hot rod (46)
Sig Smith Miniplane bipe (46)
Ace Cloud Dancer 40 (46)
Ace Seamaster (46)
Snow Goose SPAD (46)
Blackhorse Spitfire 40 (46)

The Florios are built & modified from old plans, as are the Blue Movies & the Snow Goose (which is seriously difficult to fly).

Mine is the Rascal 110, rebuilt from a dumb battery mistake. The other (at this time) is my pair of Bandito Grande's built from plans.

The quinessential Sport Plane has got to be the Stik - any Stik, for that matter. No matter how big or small, new or old, pretty or ugly, it is a design that absolutely values Function over Form. Substance over Style. Having-Fun over Showing-Off.

Properly set up, a Stik-type airplane can do just about everything (yes, even the 3D ilk). My favorite Stik is a WM Super Stunt 60 set up super light with quad flaps. The darn thing lowers blood pressure in one flight way better than 6months on Lipitor. I had fun with it even as it augered into St. Augustine grass on its very last flight. And all I did after that was shrug my shoulders, smile, and say "oh, well." If the same thing happened with any of my 27% or larger aerobats, I would feel like crap for a whole week.

I really think the reason I like flying Stiks so much is that I don't have my ego - and my wallet - chained to its tailwheel. The Stik is consistently the one I will bring to the field on a crappy day (for example, windy day with rain-soaked runaway), where I wouldn't risk any of my other planes. That makes a pretty good definition of what constitutes a Favorite Sport Plane .

I call those my "throw around" planes. My current one is a Balsa USA Thuderbug. It's the plane I take to the field when it's really windy (25+ mph). It's the plane I fly when I don't want to worry about crashing. It's the plane I fly when I'm trying new manuevers. It's funny, but it's usually the throw around plane that you "CAN'T" crash even if you try to. I swear I could take my Thunder Bug as high as I could see, point it straight to the ground with the throttle wide open, put the radio on the ground, and walk away and the plane would still wind up on the runway wheels down!!!!
