This is my plane, a Star-Lite. It's a single seater that uses a 40hp Rotax 447. Cruise is 115mph, stalls at 45mph, top speed is 157mph. It only uses about 2.5gph of pump gas with 50:1 oil mix. Empty weight is 281lbs, gross weight is 500lbs. This plane is the closest thing I could find to an oversized model airplane that I could sit in, and that's exactly what it feels like, a big model airplane. It's roll rate is 240deg/sec. I bought it for only $6k and put another $1500 in it so I have about $7500 in it which is about the going rate for a used Star-Lite. I think they're the best kept secret in general aviation. I can fly around for two hours and burn only 5 gal of the 8 on board. Climbs about 1200fpm at 55mph.

Very cool. But it must climb like a dog being that it climbs at 1200fmp, but man thats cool. Well to me it looks like an 85% to me what do guys think? lol. What kinda servos you got in that? hehe lol. Really thats really cool. Its probably the closest thing to and ultralight which is good, for some one who doesn't want to spend 14-16K on a Cessna.

Thanks Nony. It's not manufactured anymore, there were only 120 kits made in 1987 but there are still a few unfinished kits around. There's other pocket rockets that are similar though, like the Teenie II, KR-2, Moonie Mite, BD-5T, KR-1. This is the only one that would fit my 6' frame without modification to the fuselage/firewall distance.
Fletch this is a great alternative to the spam cans. It handles like a little fighter. The climb rate of 1200fpm at 55mph is considered a pretty good climb rate, I can climb to pattern altitude by the end of the runway, make my right turn and throttle back simultaneously. There's a lot of planes out there, experimental and certified, that climb 350fpm or less. Now that's a dog! I flew an Aeronca Defender that climbed 250fpm with two up in the summer. It was scary.
There are Cessna 150's out there for 15k but they're pretty much with timed out engines and needing lots of refurb work.
The new Sport Pilot license only requires 20hrs of instruction, then you could fly small experimentals that meet the Sport Pilot specs.

Those are all older designs..I thought, and was hoping, that a new and exciting breed was coming along....looks like I missed it

Speaking of dogs...75hp Ercoupe with 2 aboard...100 fpm. If you pulled back on the stick any more, it would stall. What a big letdown after some time in an Alon Aircoupe!!

I'm often amazed at how people will fly airplanes that barely fly like that Ercoupe.
Yes, there are very few new single-seat designs. It turns out that the money is in the 2-seat light sport planes, and even then there's not a lot of money compared to the rest of general aviation. The Arnold AR-5 is one exciting new design but it's not available. It flies 212mph on a Rotax 582, only 65hp.
The Starlite was ahead of it's time, it's lines look fresh even at 18yrs old.
I flew it for a half hour today. With the wheel pants on it I got a cruise of 123mph at 6300rpm, basically about 75% power.
