For those of you who are flying vintage (VRCS) airplanes that are .09 to .19 2 cycle rated, what is your engine of choice?
I just noticed that you don't have a lot to choose from in the current engine market. O.S. Max has the .10 and .15 in the LA series. MVVS has a hot little .12 available(which is probably overkill) and I have an Enya .09 on my engine shelf, but thats about it unless you go to a Cox product. I am not a big fan of the Cox stuff but I will use it if I have to.

CCRC,

Quite honestly, almost all of the .15 to .19 engines that we flew with then are still available. With no trouble ( and very little money) I have NIB Fox .15, .19, and .59 and Hawk .75 R/Cs... OS .15, .19 R/C and an Enya .15 R/C. All came from Ebay and were easy to get. These engines don't have the "collectable" value of the ignition and rare engines as THOUSANDS of these engines were produced. Just look in the engine section and I'll bet you can find just what you are looking for if you want to keep that vintage repro bird all vintage.

Just for reference, I didn't pay over $40 for ANY of the NIB old engines I bought.

Ok, thanks I will look around to see what I can scrounge up. I didn't realize that the current production market didn't have much to to choose from in the smaller engine sizes. With everything going bigger, I guess the engine producers are following in line. Seems all the smaller displacement stuff is aimed at the car market.

If you are looking for a somewhat vintage engine to go with your older aircraft look for one with a muffler, most came with out & are hard to find . I was always partial to the Veco( by K&B) .19 with the ball bearings , Perry carb & the little single bolt muffler , don't think you could hardly wear one out & it had pretty good power for a old style . Good luck , MAX H.

If you just gotta have a modern engine equivalent to an older .09-.15 take a look at the Norvel .074. Light, powerful, but, sigh, modern.

If a search among your local flying buddies doesn't turn up anything you want, you can always try eBay. But the prices run on the high side because there are so many people shopping there. I personally haven't had much luck fishing in the forum want-ads. You might also consider looking into MECA- the Model Engine Collectors Association. Their newsletter is a real blast from the past, and the more common engines are available pretty reasonable.

My experience with ebay prices for old .09 - .19 engines is the same as Deadstik's--they can be bought very cheaply. They are also still really nice engines for sport fliers, I might add.

But if you want a little more power than the oldies, what's wrong with a Thunder Tiger GP Series, OS LA series, modern Enyas, the Fox 15BB, or ASP .12 or .15?

Actually I didn't realize that Thunder Tiger had a small .10 and .15 so I am looking into one of them. I would really like to have a new Enya but the small ones are not imported into the U.S.
I am following deadsticks advice also.

Richmond advertises new Enya .09s and .15s at very reasonable prices. Haven't tried ordering from them tho--let us know if you do. The website is pretty clunky, but you should be able to find them here in a few clicks:

Buzzard Bait, Thanks for the source for the Enya .15
I am making headway, I bought a Thunder Tiger .15 today and also won a bid on Ebay for a NIB Enya .19 so I on my way to the VRCS as a participant.

Another good one is the Veco/K&B 19. Fairly easy to find, prices $35-65. Good power for the era.

I have a Top Dawg and Tri-Squire which have Magnum .15's. They run fine and idle good.

CCRC1, you're welcome--I just love engines in this size range, almost regardless of the brand. They start and adjust easily, idle well, but they are not too noisy and make a nice sound when using the upper end of their prop range. The planes they power are big enough to get in and out of pretty rough grass, while being small enough to leave assembled and throw in the trunk. Enjoy! Jim
