I think so. You can fly any thing that makes you happy and still be a sport flyer. The difference is in the attitude.

You can fly for money, or for fame, or to prove something, or strictly for the fun of it. "Strictly for the fun of it" makes you a sport flyer, no matter what you fly.

I fly an Edge 540, a Four Star, a Twin Star, a Delta Vortex and a Cub. And I used to fly a Corsair and a Mustang. I sometimes hover all of them, just to see if it can be done, but I don't take any of them very seriously and I have no interest in competition of any kind. I am a sport flyer.

IMO, sure. We have guys in my club that I`d definitely call sport flyers that play around with basic 3D stuff, to include the occasional hover. They also fly other types of planes as well and socialize at least as much as they fly. We also have some guys, nice guys, who are dedicated 3D pilots flying big Edges and Extras worth many thousands of dollars. They`re serious about it, go to competitions, and generally segregate themselves from the other flyers. They, while being EXCELLENT flyers, do not IMHO fit the definition of what I believe most of us would define as " sport flyers ".

If you fly for "joy" and not " prestige" , you can fly anything and be a sport flyer.

There's a little bit of everything at the field I flyat. Including non flying rag chewers.

One weekend a guy is a warbird man. Next week he's flying an assisted glider. Then he gets an old pattern plane pulled out the next week.
Maybe an "E job" too?

Enjoy,

Jim

The joy of being a sport flyer is that you can fly what ever flying style you want and call it whatever you want. It has worked for me for over 30 years and I have to admit that I am damn good at it!!! Good Luck, Dave

Sport fliers can fly anything they want any way they want. That is part of what makes a sport flier. My current passion is profile planes. I'm no 3D expert, but I am enjoying trying to lean some 3D. I don't work hard at progressing, and I'm sure some of the die hard 3Ders laugh at my lack of skills, but I have fun, and in a nut shell that is why I am in this hobby.

There is nothing wrong with flying competitively. I enjoy watching the pros fly, but even if I had the potential, I do not have the time or desire to compete. If you enjoy the competition, that is great, but sometimes when I see a guy frustrated about some aspect of his flying, I wonder why should anyone get worked up over a hobby. I get all the stress and frustration I need at work. The shop and flying field are places I go to relax and have fun.

In my club over here in Australia, we have every end of the sport, from some quite happy to man the bbq through to the world Pylon Racing champion, he still comes out and flys a Sportsman Aviation Paramount 60 for fun. So I guess he classes as a very capable sport flyer!!

In my mind there is Competition Flying where a Flight Plan is made, and precision moves are practiced, etc. Precision Aerobatics, 3D, Pylon, Scale Flying etc. can all fall under Competion if you are Flying your Plane to practice for serious competing. Sponsors are counting on you. The Trophy's, and respect come to the winners. Bragging rights for years to come if you do well! Also if you build one particular Model, and Fly only one Particular style then you are probally not a Sport Flyer. If you buy only Scale Planes, and only Fly Scale Like Manuevers then you are probally not a sport flyer. If you buy only 3D style Planes and Practice only 3D type Manuevers then you are probally not a Sport Flyer. You are enjoying your hobby in a diffferent way then the Sport Flyer.

Sport Flying im my opinion is all about the Fun of Mixing things up! Its all about mixing it up, and making it up as you go. Mixing Flying Styles and manuevers together, like trying Scale Take Offs just for fun using what might be a non-scale Funtana, or maybe a Scale Piper Cub, or maybe you are racing your Quickie 500, or Sig 4 star Plane in Fast Circles with imaginary Pylons, or maybe you are for no particular reason, and maybe you are throwing in a couple loops and rolls with your Avistar, or Edge 540 for good measure, and then trying to pull your favorite Trainer Plane or maybe a Big Stick into a hover just for the sake of fun or laughs......... that to me is sport flying or Fun Flying. No trophy to be won for your spectacular performance, but just the fun of doing it was reward enough!

As I have read this thread and others in this new Sport Flying forum I have noticed people wondering if they can still "sport" fly if I fly another type of flying. I thought about it and this is what I came up with. 3D, scale, pylon racing, IMAC, soaring, etc ... are all types of flying, and they aren't anti-sport flying. I think the difference is "fanatical". When somebody is fanatical about the type of flying then the become against sport flying. I think those two are direct opposites of each other, and that is where the line is drawn.

That's my .02 cents worth

Seems to me there is only sport and competitive flying. Sport flying can be any type you want to try, without the discipline needed to try to beat out other competitors. Fly any way you want, as long as you fly safely.

If you get mad at yourself for not performing every manuever perfectly, then you might not be a sport flyer.

If you complete a lopsided loop or a wobbly roll and are happy as you can be, then you definitely are a sport flyer.

I definitely fall into the latter.

The closest I come to being a competitive flyer is celebrating not finising last in a fun fly or contest. Although I did feel good once when one of our less desireables got me to enter a fun fly by offering to lend me his plane, then tried to load the event by pushing all the transmitter trims off-center. Didn't win, didn't crash, but my third place with his gimmicked plane beat him by 3 places. And he corrected the trims for his own flying.

Life does funny things.

I am a trainer and only plan to be a sport flyer. I will mostlikely stay this way. I don't see myself competing anytime soon and enjoy just hangin out at the field with some flying. I would describe my flying style as out of your chair...
