It's evil stuff & whoever decided they needed to make "thin" CA is a very dark creature. Share your mishaps so others can learn from your mistakes!

I was gluing tires for a 1/8th scale buggy. They already had a good bead on the inside but I thought I'd be safe & add another on the outside. I got in a bit of a hurry & turned one over shortly after adding a little too much medium CA. The result was a palm full of CA. I didn't think water would do much to remove it & since a large bottle of alcohol was nearby I grabbed it. A splash of alcohol & a few seconds later I saw my palm turning ghost white & I found out that these two chemicals get warm when mixed. Can we say chemical burn? The bathroom sink cooled the burning but I still ended up picking glue & skin off my palm.

This time I was gluing tires for a MT. The LHS didn't have any medium or thick CA so I was stuck with thin. I knew it wouldn't be fun but it was all I had access to. The end of my thumb was covered in so much CA that it didn't even hurt to rip it off the tire anymore & I found it a little unnerving as I shaved layers of glue off my thumb with a Xacto knife. The part that REALLY sucked was when I turned one tire over (that had been sitting for at least a minute) & felt a wet sensation on my stomach. Luckily (I think) I wasn't wearing a shirt so I didn't have to rip that off but it was very uncomfortable as I detached the tire from my gut. Even worse than that all the hair in that spot seemed to get stretched in every direction imaginable so I was left with a whole new kind of pain. Picking it off wasn't working at all since CA bonds REALLY well to hair so I bit the bullet & shaved it off. Not only do I have a 2" tall oval of smooth skin just above my belly button but I have some razor burn worthy of some kind of hall of fame.

The good news is I should have another pair of MT tires coming in the mail tomorrow & they're 40 series so I get to deal with even more glue! YAAAY!!

Heh heh, That sucks. I managed a nice screwup a while back. I was trying to fix some stripped screw` holes on a very old radioshack buggy. Since I was at college & this should have been a quick fix, I just put it in my lap and started glueing away.

Now for the catch: The `screw holes didn't have a bottom.
You see the problem?

So when I was done screwing everything back together, I put my RC on the floor and realized I had a problem. The CA' went straight through the holes and dripped onto my mesh shorts. In my infinite wisdom, I tried pushing a finger between my leg and the shorts... only to discover that now my shorts were sticking to my leg and my finger. ****.

The `glue still hasn't come out of my shorts & the weird part is that there are still patches on my leg without any hair where the `glue was.

Here are accelerants for CA:
Water
Alcohol
Cellulose -cotton, paper towels, paper, etc.
Cloth -the large surface area allows for rapid curing

If there's enough superglue, a cotton ball, paper towel or even a shop rag might catch fire if you use it to clean up the mess. I managed to somewhat melt a torn ski glove I tried to fix with superglue. :-\

Had the following happen to me once and also to a fellow flyer:

Opened a new bottle of thin CA and after that nights buiding session put it in the refrigerator to keep it fresh. Placed it on the inside door shelf. Next night I could not open the refrigerator door. After cutting the gasket away I found what I had expected, the bottle fell over, loose cap, and the CA wicked all down that side and completely across the bottom. No big loss for me as it was a spare refrig kept in the shop for storing materials such as epoxy. My friend, on the other hand, placed his in the kitchen refrigerator which was less than two months old. Brand new all stainless steel job that his wife had demanded for a year. Fortunately, being stainless, all he had to do was clean the SS off with a razor and buy a new gasket ($175.00) though it did permanently mar the lower shelf and I think one of the crisper baskets.

I have had a mishap too, well, kind of. About 5 months ago i recieved my hpi sprint and the only thing u had to do to the car b4 u ran it was to glue the tires on with CA glue. I was unaware of the strength of CA glue and how quik it dries. I started to carefully squeeze the tiny bottle of glue around the tire. I picked the tire up with my thumb and did not notice that some glue had dripped off the side. When I noticed that i had been instant cemented to a tire i carefully got up and noticed that i had knocked down the bottle. The glue started pouring out onto my garage floor. I didnt panic because i knew it was just an accident and i could clean it up, but one problem was that the other two tires were glued to the floor. I finally got the first tire off my thumb. When I got the other two off i had two 24mm circles stuck to my garage floor. I was really frustrated. I was 12 and my parents would be really mad so i got a warm towel and started to heat up the two tire spots. When i noticed the towel had been stuck to the floor i just quit. I tore out the towel and just left those two circles there. I just wanted to drive my new car.

HEHE I ruined like half of all my clothes because the CA would harden up and rip the cloth around the hardened CA. So now there are little holes in some of my pants and shirts. Now I have "Hobby" cloths and "not CAed clothes"

and on the side if you glue your sock to the floor don't rip it off you may find yourself withe a hole in your sock(personal experience)

Everytime I glue tires I get glue on my fingers. Nomatter how many percautions I take it just gets everywhere. I tried to apply it with a Q-tip, but after a few seconds the glue caused the Q-tip to start "smoking".when the glue was on the Q-tip for more than 5 seconds, it dried instantly.

After years of gluing anything to everything, now I have a BIG bottle of acetone on the table!!! I clean the tips regulary and use thin CA only with those thin long tips http://www.hobbico.com/accys/hcar3780.html , they're great!

It's really anoying when gluing small parts, the freakin' glue bonds your fingers to balsa INSTANTLY and sometimes it won't dry on balsa to balsa for seconds......

Saludos,

HAHAHA This is all so true, and has happened to all of us RCers. I am loving this thread. I hate the Thin on arm or leg hair, makes for a fun day picking it all off-OHH the Pain! Then you look like you just had a wax job, with bald spots on your arms or legs. Last time was with a huge bottle of Zap, I was trying to unclog the tip and it squirted out onto my leg, glued my shorts to my leg-- OUCH. I told my wife to try it instead of wax. LOL
