Wanted a "knock around", yet capable pattern airplane that would be cheap. Decided on the GP Venus 40 with a 2 stroke .46

Anyone with comments, pro and con, regarding how useful this will be for "knockabout pattern", or did I just whiz away a couple hundred.....?????

For the price, It does a fairly respectable job up to sportsman class. There are better choices but I don't think they are night and day differences. The Zen 50 flies very well but really has too much control in pitch. The Venus could use a longer tail moment but it still can fly a very respectable pattern. The venus is also a good knock around sport plane just like you wanted.

My friend had one of these for an (unfortunately) short while. He had an O.S. 46 FX and I don't think it had enough power. It would fly well of course but that engine kept the plane's potential low.

My son has one and he loves it - it's his favorite plane. He has an OS 70 4 stroke on it, and is flying with a 12x6 prop. It almost (but not quite) hovers. He's only been flying for a year, and he wanted a plane that would get him started in pattern flying. He's been able to do all of the pattern manouevers (sp?), and some 3D manouevers that he wanted to learn. He describes it as a fun plane that he can just "throw all over the sky".

I built it for him, and it is very well built. Some folks have said that he covering sags. We've buit about 15 ARFs, and all of them (including the most expensive) needed to have the covering tightened. I wonder if loose covering on ARFs is simply a result of the change in environments during shipping and storing the planes before they get to the local hobby store (we're a long way from the far east...).

In any event, this is a fun plane, and you might give it a try.

Bob, I think you will like it. There are several threads on here already so you might want to do a search on "venus " and see what pops up. A 46 will not give the plane unlimited vertical, but will certainly pull it thru any of the pattern stuff.

At a smallish local pattern contest a retired physician took second in the Sportsman class with the Venus and then his son took first in the Expert class with the same aircraft. He reported the day was windier than ****. They both really like it for the traditional pattern.

Sounds from the responses like I easily could have made a Far Worse choice !!! Thanks for the replies. I've ordered mine, and will post my own opinions (FWIW) after I have a chance to play with it....mid-October, likely.

It will be interesting!

Perhaps that's a song title?

Anyway, I have 60+ flights on my Venus and am very impressed with its flight characteristics. I too bought mine as a knock around plane, and it has become a favorite. I put a tired old Magnum 45 Pro up front, and the plane has excellent vertical with an 11X6. Basically I can fly it vertical until I can't see to control it. I also get unlimited knife edge on high rate rudder (see mixing note below). It flies the basic and sportsman sequences without any trouble and I am sure it could handle more. Another guy in my club has one. He also loves the plane. He put an OS46 up front and he has more power than I do and in general it is a much quiter airplane.

Here is what I found on setup. So far I have moved the CG 1/2" back from the instructions. I may move it a bit more back to reduce the amount of elevator I need to hold while inverted, and to see if I can get it to go vertical from knife edge. If you like knife edge stuff you will need a decent servo. You definitely need to set up a rudder to aileron mix for knife edge and just to have a nice neutral airplane. I also set up flaperons just for grins. This afternoon I had it holding perfectly still (no ground speed) into a 5 knot headwind. FYI I also mounted my engine sideways and put a pitts style muffler so I wouldn't have to have a regular muffler sticking out of the cowling. I still have not got the cooling right however, and 90% of the time fly with the cowl off. When I stop having so much fun I will investigate the cooling issue in earnest.

In conclusion this plane is excellent value for the money. I only wish that they made a 60 size. The UCanDo3D just doesn't have the same lines.

Hope this is helpful.

Antony

I've got one with a .70 OS FS and love it. Macbeth: Try an APC 13x6 or 13x7. I'm running Cool Power 15 in mine, and it swings these props strong. Has no problem hovering with vertical exits.

The only other comment that I would add is that when the folks at the field figure out what rhymes with "venus," you'll never hear the end of it. Chuck

Just thought I would throw my .02 in here on the Venus 40. I've been working the kinks out of one for several weeks now. Overall a very good plane. I was wondering about the CG. I set mine on the rear side of it for the initial flights and it required to much forward stick when inverted. Now I understand why. I'm running a Saito 72 inverted with the APC 13 x 6 prop. Hovers at 1/2 throttle, and can exit hover in a knife edge. Rudder servo is mounted in rear of fuse, and I have 1 1/2 oz. of lead in the tail right now. The battery is in the rear of the wing saddle. Once I get the CG down to just a whisker of elevator when inverted, I'll mount the battery in the rear fuse and take the lead off. This thing will knife edge all day long, and does great outside snaps.

I've just assembled one myself, and have flown it (only in high winds) a few times. We're going again tomorrow. (10-12-02)

For those of you who want to read and see some details, I've posted a brief review of it, with a lot of photos, at http://www.nextcraft.com/gp_venus40arf01.html

I think it's a great deal for the price, and a nice flying plane.

Antony,
I think you are going to find that it flies totally different when you get the cowl back on.

I set mine up for solid knife edge performance, no coupling, and have the servo's in the normal place and the battery is under the fuel tank. Stock JR servo on rudder allows knife edge cuban 8's with no problem. Have a 50SX in it now for power.
