here is some photos of our field from the air, and my P-40 I have to say this plane is a easy to fly with little or no bad habbits .
http://flypcc.org/pages/nl0611.pdf the OS 91fs powers this thing through te air and if you are landing on pavement or in my case astro turf the retracts are fine, I might put new ones in when it's time to recover but untill then I see no need.
here's somthing I did do on the cowl I took some 5 min epoxy and coated around where the cooling fins are just up about a 1 1/4" I had noticed some cracking on the bottom fins the epoxy stiffened them up and no problems since.
here is a photo of how I ran my exhaust out the back instead of cutting the cowl the only holes I have is for the needle and the fueler valve keeps things clean looking I like the pits style mufflers but they are a little pricey I just used the close muffler pipe to the stock pipe's out and down there is hardly any oil on the fuse at all.

Hi guys, I picked one of these up at a swap shop a few weeks ago that was supposedly NIB. When I got it home (yeah, I know.... I didn't check it well enough before handing the man my money), I noticed the cowl was crushed and the paint was chipping. I called Horizon and they most excellently sent me a new cowl, free of charge. I have sent the damaged cowl back to them.

New problem.... the retracts weren't preinstalled. Went to install them tonight and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the pushrods from the servo to the retracts. I'm assuming there's supposed to be some sort of bellcrank system - there's a threaded nut in the wing just in front of the retracts but nothing's in it - but I've got nothing in the box that looks like it would fit in the wing.

Does anyone have any pictures of their P-40 during the construction phase that shows the retract linkage system? If I have something to compare it to, I might be able to construct something. I'm going to call Horizon again and see if they can help me a 2nd time, but I'd like to at least get a look and see what I'm missing.

Thanks!

I have read this before it must have been another thread posting about this same thing the lack of bell cranks, the ones supplied are not that great but they get the job done, you just need a L shaped bell crank on each wing side at the retract, and push rods from the center of the wing out to the bell cranks if you use EZ connectors to attach the push rods then you can tweek/adjust the rods for operation.

here is a little tip, when you get the stock units in, there are little adjusting screws they are for fine adjustment don't worry about them at first you will use them later after a few flights.
to get the retracts to go fully up and down find the locking sweet spot by slowly raising and lowering the retracts until you find the down locked, locking position. if you go past that position it doesn't lock em down more, then when you retract the gear they will fully retract into the wing mine had a habit of sagging down when retracted until I fooled around with them to get them just rite you will know what I mean when you start ajusting them after install.
the EZ connectors make the adjusting easyer you can slide the pushrods and adjust them until they work properly.
sorry I dont happen to have any inside the wing shots do you have the instruction manual if you don't you can down load it from www.horizonhobby.com it's posted there

Thanks for the reply, bigtim. Yeah, I have the instruction manual but of course it shows nothing related to the retract installation, as the retracts were supposed to be preinstalled. I have plenty of pushrods and clevises laying around so that's not the problem; what I need of course is the screw/bolt that goes into the wing and the bellcrank that sits on that screw/bolt.

Thanks for the adjsuting tip! In actuating them as they came out of the package, they seem to be locking positively in both up and down. The retracts in my WM P-51 are similar and after an initial tweaking session, have required no adjustments. So I'm pretty familiar with adjusting those grub screws to make sure the retracts stay locked in both positions.

If I'm not the only one, then hopefully Horizon can help me out when I call them tomorrow. They were superb when I called about the cowl.

so it looks like a machine screw like the dubro ones except the cranks are alum. popped down to the shop and took a pic for ya I just tape my wells in for easy access in case the gear gets fowled at the field the wire is my servo lead all I had at the time was masking tape for security

That's awesome bigtim, thanks! I appreciate you doing that for me. That's about what I envisioned when I saw the hole for a screw in the wing. I don't have anything like that laying around the shop though is the problem...

I called Horizon today and explained my problem. The guy I spoke to was again very nice, and said he'd have to check with the returns department to see if they can find the parts I need and send them to me. He told me to call by early next week and see what they had found. I told him that I was thinking last night I kinda wished I didn't glue the wing together yet, as it might have been easier to send him the wing halves back. He said it may very well come to that, but they don't know yet (that's why I have to call on Monday). I may get lucky and they can send me the bellcranks and pushrods, but I forsee me building a very large box to send that wing back to Horizon.

the guys at horizon are great after I took the pic I noticed my gear was a little sloppy so I adjusted them last night, tightened the collars etc..and was noticing the ball joints starting to wear out a bit called them today and there sending me a new set FOC I was stoked to say the least. you know the Dubro nylon cranks with the brass behring collar should work fine in a pinch they are pretty stiff plastic . but hey if you can get a new set of wings then thats O.K. for sure.

scissor links pointing to the rear
a little extra note on the gear, last weekend I was flying my P-40, first landing of the day and my L side gear collapses thought it had to be the ball joints I was adjusting the gear before taking it to the field, the screw that holds the bell crank had vibrated out and was nowhere to be found fortunately a club member had a spare screw and washer to fix it with, it was a nice and easy landing so only a couple of minor scrapes on the cowl and wing tip, astro turf rug burn.
before I fly the P-40 again I will be putting lock-tight on those screws and a few others for sure something to check out before a minor crash turns fatal

I am on my second one of these planes and both of them, the bellcrank bolts were not even finger tight.

I've got about 15 flights on mine now and I have to admit this is one easy landing plane. I know they are expensive, but I used the Century Jet retracts and they work so well, that I can land without even the slightest bounce with the struts taking up any surface irregularities. Although, they weren't exactly a drop-in replacement, it was work the extra work.
