It flies! Yahoo! I maidened my Hangar 9 P-40 today. Man, does it fly nice!! Very scale-like flight, but yet there's plenty of reserve power on-tap for those high-speed passes. I have powered it with the following - Hacker A50-12S Jeti Opto-70 Maxamps 5s 4000 lithium MA 14x9 3-blade AUW, according to my fish scale, was 8 lbs. 14 oz. Static amp draw on a fresh battery is 65A. Half-throttle produces plenty of speed for cruise, and I didn't find myself using a lot of WOT (except on those pretty high-speed passes!). I expect it's just about as fast as my club-mate's .91 2-stroke H9 P-47. It's not a contest, of course; he even admits his is overpowered. I just like to think that I shouldn't have a problem keeping up! We started a 'fighter wing' in our club of .60-sized WWII warbirds, and this P-40 is my entry. Our official name is the "913th Fighter Group", named after our AMA Chapter Number 913. So far we have two P-51s, a P-47, and now a P-40. Two AT-6 Texans are on the way, as well as another Mustang, a F4U Corsair, another P-47, and a pair of Hellcats. We flew 5 planes in formation last week (.60-sized P-47, two .40-sized Mustangs, a Ripmax e-powered Spitfire, and a .60-sized Mustang) and it was a sight to behold. I can't wait to get that P-40 in formation with the other .60-sized planes! Anyway, after diagnosing and repairing an ESC problem (loose connection), I flew 6.5 minutes and put back 2700 mAh in one pack. I flew almost 8 minutes the 3rd time around, and I'm curious to see what went back into that pack. With good throttle management, I would think a 10-minute flight is do-able. E-calc states around 70+ MPH if I remember right. I don't know if it's quite that fast, but the size of the plane can be deceptive as it's pretty fast when it's wide open. Yay for Mike! Another e-bird takes flight!! I'll post pics once I re-glue the exhaust stack.
