Hello all. FLyboy 12 which motor are you using in your P-40? I thought I saw a few posts back you where using an OS 91 FX if so could you psot some photos? I have the 91FX and would like to see how yours fit in the cowl I have my head at the 9 oclock position and I hate seeing it stick out of the cowl. I have a pitts muffler on it or I would mount it inverted. I am still thinking about changing it. I need to know what to do with th exhust if I do. Thanks

I just sold my 91 fx but I did have it inverted. I had to cut a large hole (just the size to fit) in the side of the cowl for the exhaust to fit out of it. my muffler mounted on the side of the engine. I still have the muffler though.

it's a shame to cut that cowl up too much, I use a OS91fs with a close header and just aimed the pipe out the rear of the cowl at the cooling fins that engine has plenty of power for the P-40 the 4st sound fits the plane nicely

Hello I agree it is such a nice looking cowl. I hate that my Cyl head sticks out. I have the OS 91 FX though the 2-stroke. I wanted to go Saito 100 when I bought it but the LHS owner talked me into the OS and mounting it sideways, I bought mine over a year ago and was just starting out, he was afraid I would have a problem with flameouts, so said not to mount it inverted. This guy is a very knowlegable old timer who taught me how to fly but I have since gotten four other 4 strokes and have never had a problem. I would pull the OS out and put a saito in but bought a Pits style muffler for it to to run the exhaust out the bottom. I am just finishing this plane now because I like flying more than building and it went on the side for the summer. Just wish I had known when I bought everything.

That is why I pulled the 2 stroke out and putting in a 4 st. Much easier, sounds scale ( close ) and I dont have to BUTCHER my cowl.

A few suggestions , you can go to MACS products , they sell 90 degree bends that fit most 4 cycles , you need to know the measurements when calling . You purchase three things ,
one engine 90 degree bend , 1 bendy pipe (this will be about 15 " will last for about three planes , and one muffler adapter .
THis will give you a very tight exit in alomost any cowl .
YOu tighten everything then you back it out about 1/2 turn and seal with heat proof silicone tp prevent carcking from vibration . Works everytime , I have this in my VQ P40 , and now my Seafury

Where did you get the 90 degree elbow and flex exhaust pipe from?.

LHS can order from Horizon for you, or you can order from Horizon directly. This is really the prefect setup for this plane and this engine. Everything is hidden, except for the main needle valve.

Horizon is offering one for the saito line but they dont have an attachmnet if you need to use pipe to the muffler . You may need the 90 degree in the engine and then an attachment to the muffler .

My will use the JR 791 retract servo for my P40. Do anyone know a suitable servodelay unit that works together with that servo ?

I just called Horizon and told them I had the 100 and wanted the 90 degree adapter and flex pipe that attaches to it that will fit inside my P-40 cowl. He told me exactly what I needed on the spot. I ordered and they look just like the pics in post 595. works perfect.

A friend of mine is assembling this plane & said it has lots of down & right thrust. Has anyone here flown one with the thrust taken out?. He just doesn't want the cowl out of square with the fuse.

I look out the right thrust on the one that I did the review on ( http://www.rcuniverse.com/magazine/article_display.cfm?article_id=713 ), for the same reasons (wanted the cowl to fit squarely). The plane flew great with it like that.

I am not sure about the down thrust I didn't notice that much if any , but I did shim out a bit of the R.thrust with washers behind the engine mount to line the cowl up better if you use washers I would recomend fender washers they are larger dia. with a small hole to spread the load out against the firewall, I used smaller washers and they started digging into the fire wall rather quickly.
