I think I can make my own air line restrictors with wheel collars & locktite. How’s this for an idea, you slip a wheel collar on an air line, put a drop of locktite on the screw and then screw it down as it begins to restrict the line. It would even be adjustable.

Do all you think it would work?

It worked awesome! I just put on 3/8” wheel collars over the red air lines. I put a drop of locktite on the grub screws and screwed them down until I stopped the air flow; I then backed them out until I was happy with how slowly the wheels were being pulled up. I had the gear easily rotating all the way and the big fat tires sliding into the wheel wells quite nicely. I’m happy with them going up in about 2.5 seconds. With the tiny air tank I can get the gear up and down 4 times per air charge which I think is about the same as without the “restrictors”.

Here's my H9 P-40...I picked it up used and I never liked the stock covering scheme, so I've stripped it and given it a Russian "lend-lease" color scheme...Looks pretty good with the exception of having no exhaust stacks... Has the electric LADO retracts in her and they work like a charm.

Yes, that pic was taken at the EP Tom Saywer flying field and you are correct, that's where the Warbirds over Louisville takes place.
We are fortunate to have a nice field like that...Here's a link to our club:

That's the H9 standard covering, lightly sanded and painted, then I used TF flat lustercoat to seal it all after airbrushing.
Just going for something a little less usual to buzz the field.

I have a Top Flight P-40 with Century Jet gear. Works ok except slams uip and down. I've got CJ gear in another airplane and bought the expensive 4 way adjustable valve. Even with valve adjusted all the way down, one side still operates too fast. After I read your note about using wheel retainers as restricters I tried it. Didn't have any retainers small enough, but had some plastic tubing that fit into retainer and the airhose went through tube. Hopefully this will protect hose from the set screw so it won't cause a leak. Anyway, works great and didn't cost anything except some spare parts I had on hand.

After some delays (a move, new job, new child, and two years ) I was finally able to get my swap meet special maidened. I had to re-built part of it and you can read back in this thread to see what I did. The original owner put Snoopy in the cockpit so I thought I would let him have the first few flights before I swapped him out. I am running a Saito 100 with a MAS 14x7 three blade with a Turboheader muffler. The sound of that muffler sounded really good in the air. The idle was fantastic. I hadn't run the engine in two years so I had some minor tuning issues to address including a fuel tank that was too high. I found a crack in the stock one the night before and in the rush to replace it I didn't get it low enough. The tank height and a lean low end were the prime culprits of my issues. I cut the flight short because of it but one of my fellow clubs members was able to get some good pictures before I landed and the weather rolled in. The pictures in order are taxi , take off, fly by, dirty pass, and the moment right before I greased the landing (after overshooting by a few feet ). She flies very nice and definately floats on the landing. I was a little unsure of the retracts on grass but I didn't have an issue on take off or landing. I had my CG at 3.5 inches. Thanks to all the ideas in this thread. We don't see enough P-40's at the field so this one is definately a keeper.

On a side note, Jim provides a nice product in the Turboheader and his service is first rate.

I only needed one ounce of lead on the firewall. I had removed three but the prior owner had a two stroke in it. There is probably a couples of ounces of resin and glass cloth that I used to rebuild the firewall. The battery is in the middle tray.

Interesting.
When I built mine using Saito 100, I put the servos in the tail section and had to add 9 oz of weight to balance. After a few flights the plane seemed a little sluggish, so I moved the servos (rudder & elevator) up to the main fuse section, using carbon rods, and was able to remove the 9oz of weight. Now it handles very nimbly and the guys at the field like how it moves. I'm using the 14x7 Master 3-blade prop - gives a very scale appearance.

I looked up the TurboHeader at RCSpecialites - it looks nice. The exhaust doesn't seem to work with the Saito header pipe. How did you install it? Any photos by chance?

Michael

Here are some pics under the cowl. I am right at 8.5 lbs and I didn't do much to keep her light. I am running MG servos in the rear and 4-40 rods all around. You can see a little bit of lead in the fourth picture.

Rustypep,
As far as I can see you’re not using a glow driver.
Don’t you think it is necessary with an inverted engine?
I’m finishing my P-40 with a SAITO 115 and I was wondering whether I should use a glow driver.
I will use a Turboheader muffler, but the 90º adapter is touching the cowl. What did you do to avoid this?

Arruda,
I have a similar setup for the glow, and have never had a flame out, or problem with the engine.

Rustypep,
I like your exhaust setup..

Arruda, I agree with FlymoreRC that a glow driver is not necessary if it is tuned correctly and I am not using one here. I had it idling on the ground around 1,600 but I am not going to push my luck with that in the air. The Turboheader I am using is the older version. The newer one is more compact and Jim's 90 degree adapter is also more compact and should hold up better. This one has the Saito 90 degree adapter which has some history of breaking but it is braced at both ends so I don't expect a problem. If so, I will be ordering a replacement from Jim. The exhaust extension is anchored in two places behind the muffler by wire straps through anchors (extra landing gear staps) underneath. I have no issue with muffler contact with the cowl. I pushed the muffler as far in as it would let me. Maybe you can show us a picture of your set up so we can see where it is hitting?

We will see how the exhaust holds up over time but so far so good and no recorded performance loss with the extension. I picked up some power with the turboheader. I have another piece of the higher temp tubing but I am not going to change it out until it shows signs that it needs replacing.

I posted some pics of my OS set up way back in this thread but here is my plumbing doesn't seem to affect performance at all,I have several inverted 4st engines they all run fine without a glow driver.

hey where did you get the high temp tubing I need some for another project.

I am still needing to remaiden after installing the robostruts on mine, just need to find some time these days

That blue tubing is from AeroTrend. Their "Cream" is better because it is true higher temp but I can never catch it in stock.

Finding time is another subject. I keeping looking for it so I can finish my Spit.

Thanks FlymoreRC and Rustypep for your prompt reply.
I have another question for you and Bigtim: How much nitro are you using to get a consistent inverted low idle? I’m using 20/20 fuel and a glow driver on my H9 P-47 and it works fine (Saito 125). But on the P-40 I’m assembling (with Saito 115) I’m thinking to move to 10% nitro (for economic reasons - Saitos’s drink too much fuel) and no glow driver (for weight reasons).

Arruda,
I use CoolPower MV, 15% Nitro and things run just fine. I do run with a rich mix on high, such that I see an exhaust trail.

I use an inverted Saito 100.

I run 10% coolpower in my OS engines lately, because I got a deal on the fuel in bulk.

they run well on the 10-15% fuels with no glow driver, my exposure to Saito engines is pretty limited, but if your having trouble with inverted running, then a idle bar plug might help with that as well
