Going to toss an aluminum one on mine with a black 3 blade, should look pretty good. I had to re-glue a bunch of the tail servo mount area. Just snapped while I was putting the servo's in place. Also slapping an on board glow on it. With any luck be airborne this weekend.

hello good luck with the plane i also added a on board glow, and also added several other details like, a true turn 3 blade spinner, robostruts a pilot and a in cowl muffler well pretty much a straight pipe from saito and 90` degree elbowand it sounds allot quieter. And from what ive been hearing about the plane falling out of the sky when the rear stabs brake apart on a dive, well that got me thinking and i sure dont want to lose this plane like i did my old kyosho P40,i whent ahead and did a test on the gound i full throttled it and noticed allot of vibrating from the tail surfaces so i added a support brace for the stabs better be safe then sorry i say
I know the braces arent scale but in the air who`s gonna know right?. .lol

Well final follow up on the P-40. I lost mine today.

I was on my 4th flight, I had some retract issues I had fixed. All in the normal course of event, nothing major. I was about 8 minuted in to the flight and I had made a turn to get into the Landing pattern. Left turn and the plane just kept banking hard left, into a roll. I was at about 3/4 throttle, plenty of flying speed, just an average grooving turn left, then never stopped.

It would not come right at all other than to slow the speed of the roll. I was able to reduce throttle so it didnt go in at as great of a speed as it could have. Thats about the only plus side.

When I got to the plane my rudder was fully deflected left and the aileron harness had come undone. Completely my fault, I neglected to heat shrink the connector.

I think I can rebuild it, essentially everything from the front of the wing was toast, motor ok, (swampy ground) wing is perfect, so I have to rebuild the front.

PLane looked great in the air and flew well. No problems other than poor builder syndrome.

Lesson learned.

Tom

Liberator, so sorry to hear of your loss. We live and learn. I just finished my P-40 conversion to electric; I will use your mistake to help me if that makes you feel any better. Good luck with the re-build.

seanychen,
that's a lot of prop for a saito 100. I have this engine, and I typically swing a 14 X 8 or 15 X 6 two blade. Those push the limit. I'd think more in the neighborhood of 13 X 8 or so for your three blade job. JMO. If you put it on there, you should probably get between 8 and 9000 out of it! If you're close to 9 grand, then you'd be fine. Just going on my experience with this engine. It's strong, but it doesn't compare to the YS 110!

buy a new one you will add weight and it will fly badly. I use heat shrink from lhs that the car guys do its soft so you can cut it off if needed. the radio shack stuff is a pain to get off. sorry you lost it. I lost a 3000.00 jug four years old due to spar failure. Im building a new one and discovered carbon rod! This wing will never fold!

What part are you heat shrinking? I guess I'm too new to have had this problem yet (or too anal).

Rangerman,

Back in the day, all of the servo's, (or most of them) sat over the cg in neat little trays. This kept them close to the rx so the cords were always long enough. Now a days, you have servo's out in the wing, and back near the tail feathers for lots of different reasons. Bottom line is servo extensions are far more common than when I use to be in the sport.
When you use either a servo extension or a mixing pot, or any kind of servo combiner wiring, you really need to secure the plugs so they can't come apart. I have done it on every plane I have, I completely spaced it on this one. I usually use shrink tubing, but you can tie them together as well, I just don't think it's as neat as shrink tube.
I am thinking that a servo came unplugged so when I went into my turn the roll continued. WHen I tried to go the other way, all it did was slow the roll down. THe roll went pretty fast. The other mystery was that the rudder was fully locked left. So I don't know what happened, I am hypothesizing. I have also thought, "did I stall it?" But I was cooking right along and the turn was like all the others, Nice and groovy. THis one just kept turning over. I am still thinking I amight have had one helluva hit that locked everything up.

The black box is still missing.

Tim, I am pulling the onboard glow off, the weight might just even out, I will see though. I want to keep it close top the same weight.

Tom
