flyhi2005 -> DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (3/20/2005 10:41 PM)

I have a kit of F18 Hornet
made by old company that cold DIRECT CONNECTION
the plane need engine and prop in the front

wings span 53.0 in
length 59.0 in
wing area 682 sq.in
weight 7.5 - 8.5 lb

the engine is hard decision

what do you think is the best power plant for this plane:

OS FX 91with MACK tuned pipe
SUPER TIGER G91 with MACK tuned pipe
PICO 60 with MACK tuned pipe(old)

the price of the SUPER TIGER is cheaper in 100$ !!!from the OS

last question-
what is the best prop size with the right engine? For speed.

thenks

Cyclic Hardover -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (3/21/2005 5:28 AM)

Wel your first mistake is choosing a mack tuned pipe for any of them. Go with the Performance Specialties Ultra Thrust . I would not install any that you listed but if those were my only options , I would go with the 91fx, then the ST. I have no idea what a Pico is. If you want general flying from the planes, those engines will fly it. If you want high performance, Jett is the only answer. Consider a 11/8 on it ot if you go with a Jett, 12/7apc.

Warjet -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (3/21/2005 10:05 AM)

The Pico 60 would be marginal. If you had an 80, that would run rings around the other 2 for top end speed (I have 2 of each of these engines). Between the OS and ST, I'd run them in and pick the best of the 2 for transition, like when you overshoot the runway the first time you try to land the F-18 and need to power up quick!

Kirk RC -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (3/22/2005 8:29 AM)

I have this plane and started out with an OS FX-91 and then changed to a Jett 90l. The OS will fly it but the prop size will cause ground clearance issues and is on the low end of the power curve. This plane needs power and alot of it to fly well.

overnout -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (3/26/2005 7:48 AM)

What prop size were you using with the 91 FX. I have aquired this plane with an FX installed. Also, does anyone know the CG measurement?

Thanks.

HaveBlue -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (3/26/2005 8:37 AM)

if you dont get a reply on the cg before my kit arrives, I'll let you know off the plan, I should have it buy the end of next week, it seems to be the same plane that Juno rc has taken over[;)]

johntheroadie -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (3/27/2005 6:45 AM)

You bought a F-18, HaveBlue??

Yer making me jealous...man, it's really tough keeping up with the cool airplanes you're getting. [:)]

HaveBlue -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (3/27/2005 7:39 AM)

well actually john I think it's all gonna catch up with me soon, I'm straining to afford all this , yet alone out fit these things with all the right servo's etc, and to top all of this off, I have only flown the F4 , which isnt superfast to begin with I'm pretty much biting off more than I can chew, and on another note I still have to get the kits built and its not like I have any room to set anything up, its pretty much a case of work on something for a while and then pack it up..I found rcu, seen the speed plane forum, and the speed bug has bit me again, even though years ago I was trying to fly a pilot kit BF109E with a marine engine(water jacket removable)albeit about 20 years ago..

johntheroadie -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (3/27/2005 3:41 PM)

So you and I are in the same boat then [:D]

I know the feeling, I too have an attic full of unbuilt airplanes and too many credit card bills! Not to mention I'm still trying sort out the F-15 before moving on on a faster airplane as well. [:)]

HaveBlue -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (3/27/2005 5:10 PM)

Hi ther flyhi, I dont know about the pico, but I can tell you although the ST G 90 is a good engine, It doesnt seem to be the choice for a prop jet, even though I run one on my F4 phantom, I think I will be looking for a engine that delievers its peak power in a higher rpm band, to run the macs tuned pipe on a G90, would mean proping to peak at about 11,000 rpm which brings it closest to its advertised HP figure of 2.35, but you wont see much past 2.10 hp and then thats using a 13x8 ~10 type of prop, and from what I have heard about the FA 18 hornet, you might want to go with something with a higher power band

hey john ..row faster ..I sick of going round in circles here...[:D]

and Snoop..whats exactly wrong with using a mac's tuned pipe??. I could be wrong but I have heard the ultra thrust is more of a tuned muffler .difference then would be a wider rpm band in the sweet spot..or am I barking up the wrong tree here?[:-]

dk823 -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (4/5/2005 3:46 AM)

The correct CG location is 24 inches aft of the spinner ring (not the spinner)........OR.........2 inches aft of Bulkhead 5.

I hope this helps. Let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

looks like Derek beat me to it, I only unrolled the plans today.. wow I'm gonna need a BIG building board for the F18.. but cant wait to get started on this kit..as soon as I can find some place to start the build and lay out the plans, I will be able to order all the hardware I need and then start building..if I can get the garden shed up to empty out my garage I'll do this one and the AKM Flanker side by side

Arrowflyer -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (4/19/2005 11:00 PM)

Had a DC F18 w/ ST S90 which turned higher RPM than the G's. Worked great, had flaps and retracts.
Flaps really helped on landing. The plane was so fast that one day it couldn't take the stress and the wing decided to depart the airframe. Actually the wing hold down bolts pulled right up through the fuse. But that's OK I've got four more DC F18 kits that are next for the table. You can bet that the area where the wing hold down bolts go through the fuse will be re-enforced with carbon fiber!
I'll put 3 ST S90's in three and a Jett 90 in the other(Just can't beat a Jett). Good luck, you'll have a blast!!!

kqutob -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (10/28/2006 3:01 AM)

Guys , I'm reviving this thread because I'm reaching a stage where I need to make some decisions on my DC/Juno F-18.
Although I already have a homeless 91fx I think this kit is worth the investment in a new Jett 90L.
However I'm still unsure what retracts to go with , any advise will be appreciated.

Spring air gear, or the new "econo" robart gear (which are basically spring-air clones).

The OS91 will work ok, if you invest in the jett-stream or ultra-thrust muffler for it - 12x8 or 11x9 prop.

Major Pain -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (11/2/2006 5:50 PM)

What is the problem with the Mac tuned muffler? I am running it on a 46AX and Viper airframe and showing 125 mph with radar gun on 9x8 prop. Since just getting back into speed after 10 years out of hobby what am i missing? Help me be faster.

kqutob -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (11/2/2006 6:46 PM)

Thanks Bob , I think I will go with Robarts economy, they look fine.
As for the Engine , from my humble experience I got far better results from Macs mufflers and magic pipes with smaller engines (.46 & .50) than I did with the 91fx.

Currently I have an UltraThrust on another 91fx and I'm getting 12,000rpm turning a 12x10 (running rich). So I guess the real question is:Would that be enough for a fast F18
and how much more can a Jett 90 give.

The MACs muffler is not a tuned muffler. It is a good muffler - low loss..... but its not a tuned device.

genehackett -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (8/5/2011 1:48 AM)

If you are interested I know where an unfinished DC f18, that is complete with original parts and instructions for $40.

genehackett -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (8/5/2011 1:50 AM)

It's in a group of unfinished planes that I'm interested in. But I don't fly fast jets, so I wouldn't need the jet.

Fidelity101 -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (1/31/2012 4:06 AM)

I just started the build and realize that I lost the main hardware kit and canopy. Does anyone know if it's still possible to buy them?

Also, has anyone tried an electric version?

dasquirrelisme -> RE: DIRECT CONNECTION F18 Hornet questions (1/31/2012 11:14 AM)

The kit did not come with hardware. As for the canopy you could try junorc but I heard they quit making kits too. They might have extra parts laying around though.

I would call 125 a little on the slow side. Drop a Jett muffler and an APC sport 9X7 and it will be faster. The black one peice Mac's muffler isn't all that great and the 9X8 is a tad too much load. With the right muffler and prop the .46 likes to rev.
