Hello,
Next year I hope to try some pylon racing with a Q-500. One of the guys in the club I was in down south had this Lanier Predator and he could not get if off the grass so he sold it to me with a busted firewall for $50. I kid you not, he tried everything and the planes would not get out of the grass. I am now in CT and the grass here looks just as tall. I was hoping to find a club with a runway, but no luck yet.
Where can I get some taller gear for this plane. This is one of the new ones and those gear are still not high enough. Where do you get replacement racing wheels, the original broke on the last attempt.
I am going to glass in the firewall, should 2 layers of 2 oz glass be ok. I am going to run a TT-40 in it.

Thanks in advance,
Gary

I have that plane, standard gear, and fly off the grass all the time.

Here's the trick....... Put it on the ground, aim it into the wind, step (lightly) on the tail, hold full up elevator, rev it up, and take your foot off. Zoom, off she'll go! No danger of snapping, don't worry about it.

I screwed a bit of plastic on the underside tail to act as a skid, actually its a a nose gear mounting block. That gets a bite into the soil so you can hold it from running off without too much pressure.

We take ours off grass all the time.

These types of planes really don't taxi, you need someone to hold the plane on the ground as you throttle up to full. The helper gives it a good push into the wind as you hold full up elevator. It should be up in no time.

If not, check the incidence on the firewall, wing, and tail. Also, check your C.G. A nose heavy plane may have a problem nosing over. The predator is hard to make tail heavy unless you are putting stuff behind the rear servos.

Another trick is to mount your landing on the model so that it can be reversed if need be.

If you look at the Quickie gear (Dubro L1/2 style), you can mount it on the fuse one of two ways. By drilling the mounting holes in the gear so they are symmetrical, you can spin the gear 180 degrees to locate the wheels closer to the C of G for pavement or further forward for grass.

Quickies off grass are no problem. Full throttle, get a helper to hold it, firm push into the wind and enjoy.

I fly both Q40 and Q500 off grass. Launch them myself.

Full throttle, Full up, let it go and get on the aileron.
