Status: offline 		Roger, by now you probably have a camcorder but here is my 2 cents worth. About 2 months ago I bought a Sony HC42 for use at flyins and with the grandson. I am extremely satisfied with it. The touch screen features are very easy to use and the picture quality is excellent.

Status: offline 		If you want to edit then DO NOT buy a DVD camcoder. If you want to shoot then play - fine. I personally would not touch one for any amount of money.

I'm in agreement with you. That's why I went with the DV format. By the way, If you were buying a DVD recorder in the $500 price range, what would you buy and what would you stay away from? It would need IEEE1394 input, a HDD, and decent editing capability.

I posted a similar question on this forum and did not get one response.

Status: offline 		check out the panasonic d snap sv av50.my dad and i both have one.he uses his for airial videos even put it on one of my rc boats. it has video,photo,voice recorder,and mp3 player all in one.it is the size of a mini cass. rec. flip out screen. it doesnt have that great of zoom but overall a great lil digicam.[image][/image]

Status: offline 		I guess the reason that I haven't gotten responses to my question is that no one understands what I'm talking about. Video Guy, of all people, you should know what I'm talking about. And what does pros or semi pros have to do with anything?

Status: offline 		Oh... my response of 0 was not to you ;-) Sorry. I have Tivo and just export off the Tivo to my computer if I want to burn a show. No experience with stand-alone DVD recording units.

The answer is because I want to dump RC flyin tape in digital format (DV) via iLink to a stand alone DVD recorder. I want to edit out bad shots etc before I burn to a DVD disk. I don't want to do this with my computer. Since there was not a lot of activity on this thread concerning DVD camcorders and since your title was Video Guy I thought I would take the opportunity of asking a video expert. However, since you have no experience with DVD recorders, I'll just shuffle on back to RC airplanes.

Status: offline 		Yep the days of "manually" editing footage, via hardware, are thankfully over Seriously... for $500 bucks I would buy a Mac with a IEEE1394 port and DVD burner. Tons easier and comes with all the software you need (drag and drop)
