I changed out the engine mount last night plane lost 3.5 ounces. I will probobly change out the throttle servo tonight and put in an HS-81mg that should save an ounce. I have also thought about switching out the control linkage for titanium ones from Hangar 9. We will see. It is funny all of us complain about crappy hardware in these ARFs now that we get one with good hardware we still talk about changing it!! Oh Well

Man, I'e been down in the dumps lately, because IM only 15, and I want the BEST of everything, and can't afford those things, FYI: JR PCM 10X , DA Motors , Those cool trick carbon fiber spinners , JR Digital Servos , JR 10 Channel synthesized receiver , etc, etc. IT all adds up VERY quickly, even boiling down to servo extensions and stuff, also I want those cool trick Duralite Batteries , what I need is a job, but this hobby is soooo expensive, even though I've been in it for about 4 years, I'm already getting discouraged!! I wonder if I should quit Tell mewhat I should do, I'm trying to be content with what I have, but its soo hard, because my 6EXA wont do what I want anymore, and Ive been talking to Mike McConville so much, hes gonna get me to switching to JR in a heartbeat. Thanks soo much!!

I'm kindda in the same boat you are. I haven't had much money to buy the best equipment either. I flew a salvaged flip 3D on a Futaba Attack4( just try NO expo). When I had major radio problems, I had to buy a new radio and chose the 9C. This radio is more than I need. I'm a much better pilot for not having flown with expo. Lately I've been torqrolling a Telemaster trainer with a .60 on the nose and have been doing the impossible for many of the top pilots-torqrolling a trainer. Due to not having enough money I started repairing my planes. I can now build from my own plans. Because I have this experience,I am about ready to build my own design 52% Extra. The airframe will probably cost 200-300 dollars. As I continue to save my hard earned money( for a DA 200) I am becoming a very skilled pilot. I started around the ages of 10-11 and am now 18. I am starting to be able to afford more stuff now, but I will probably buy just a bunch of balsa to build my dreams. I have almost reached the point where I can sell a few of my designes to pay for this hobby.

Anyway, that's my story up to now, I hope it helps. just hang in there and be the best pilot you can be.

So between Moki 2.1 and 1.8 which would be the better option?

The 2.1 is only 5 oz heavier... more power... I'd say you want the 2.1...

I can see trying to lighten up the plane, but why remove weight from the nose? Mine, with the ZDZ 40, balanced at 5" with the flight pack battery over the wing tube and the rudder in a pull-pull configuration. How are you going to lighten up the tail to compensate for the loss in nose weight. Losing 4 or 5 oz. in front of the CG is going to require around a lb. to come off of the tail and I just don't see it happening. The plane flys really, Really well as it is. What is to be gained by spending all of that money in order to save a few oz? Never mind the fact that as the plane gets lighter wind will start to adversely effect the flying characteristics. Don't know about where you fly, but around here we always have a 5-10 mph wind, 'specially during prime flying time. Not really knocking your idea, just don't understand.

Wrong...you got it backwards. It's a simple weight X arm X moment figure. Let's say the motor mount is 10" in front of the wing tube and the tail components are 30" in back of the wing tube and the plane currently balances level right at the wing tube. Now, lose 3.5 ounces by switching motor mounts. You just lost 35oz/in of moment in front of the wing tube and the tail just dropped on you. To get it level again, you need to lose 35oz/in aft of the tail. If you take that weight off at around the 30" mark you can figure how much you need to take off by dividing the forward monent(35oz/in) by the distance aft of the wing tube(30") and you will see that you actually only need to lose 1.17oz. to get your balance back at the wing tube... hope that helps!

I also moved the engine forward 1/8 in to help compensate. Like I said we will see. I like to play around with stuff and its not like I can't put it back if it doesn't work.

Extra. Couple of questions.
1. Do you like this airplane?
2. What would you do different?
Thanks,

I can understand the playing around to see what works part. I do that sometimes myself. My Funtana 90 has had 3 engines on it and now sports CF landing gear at both ends, dunno how many props I have had on it, and I have played around with some other stuff to make it fly better and improve the ground clearance/ tracking.

When the time comes I may do some swapping around on the 260 as well but for now I am going to spend my time getting it sorted out as it is and then maybe I'll see what can be changed to improve it. My side of the state has been smiled upon by the weather gods today and all the parts I was still waiting on are back (including my 9Z) so this evening I plan to really give this plane a workout and see what she's really capable of. After I put the new servo arms on and got her programmed into the transmitter I can't wait to fly it again. It flew well on the maiden but with 3/4" arms on the elevators and a slight imbalance between the two halves as well, it was kinda limited as to what it could do. Now I have bevel to bevel throws on everything and the elevator imbalance is gone as well so it should really be a monster now.

Not much talk of useing a Saito 180 here. The planes on it's way and I should get it Friday. Im pulling the 180 out of the H-9 540 Edge. I was getting 10min flite times out of it, and it hovers fine at 1/2 throttel. It doesn't pull out like a rocket but move's up quickly enough. I'm running a 18 x 6 CF prop and CF landing gear and the plane weighs a hair over 12 lbs with a 2100mha battery. If I can keep it at +/- 12lbs I think it will perform fine for my type of flying. Anybody have one flying yet with a 180 ??

Oh... and by the way the 540 is for sell if anybodys looking for one.

Oh Hell yes it should fly great with the YS 160. I can't say for sure cause I dont own a YS but I think they are very similer to the 180. I do have to say I was shocked at the price of the YS 160 DZ 799.00 on Tower, I looked it up because of talk of it being a good pair up for this plane... but 799.00 Damm.... Are they that much better than a Saito 180 ??

My nefeuw and I were talking about this 260 on Monday and the first thing he said was GASSER. Ok....... I'm a die hard glow guy, not ready to give up my paper towels and windex cleaning up my oily planes, and I'm a hack 3D flyer. But the way I punch the numbers.... Lite is a good thing. And if it hits 12 lbs +/- with the 180. I'll have a smile on my face

Time will tell, It sounds like there is only a few flying out there with only a few engine combos. I just hope this first run isn't a test bed for better mods at the factory. Now that would not be nice.

JPK - I love Saitos but after trying the YS there is no turning back. My YS110 running on 30% heli fuel will turn an APC 16x6 at 10,200 RPM peak, its probably best turning a 17x6. The YS160 will turn a 20x6 or 18x10, so what do you think? Not bad huh? As for price its totally ridiculous over in the US, $799 is nuts ... here we buy it for like USD600 only.

tIANci, Ya the Saito won't spin a 20" prop at that for sure. It's all what ya have to use.. I'll give the 180 it's shot. I have one and it's going in it good or bad. Staying lite will be the key.
The plane was so nice looking I had to have one. And the wife.. the Doll she is said go for it....

The 180 will be able to haul a 12 lbs plane ... I am sure it will produce about 20 lbs of thrust. I think my gf will buy the Extra 260 for me ... she always wants to buy me RC planes and engines ... I think its bad to get gifts all the time ... hmmmm ... maybe its because I am 30 and she is 45 ... am I a TOY BOY??!!!! Hey I am just kidding about the toy boy bit!

Barry I love this plane and I am not sure I wpould do anything different. I am ready to fly for a little less than a grand and it looks great on the ground and in the air! This might sound crazy but to me a knife edge pass is one of the best looking things you can do and this plane does it with ease! ZERO COUPLING. It does everything else great too but that is really what sells me on a plane. I am basicly just toying around with it to see how light I can get it. The power of the OS 160 gets better every flight. Hell the first time I started the engine was at the field and ran it for 15 min topped off the fuel and put it in the air so there is alot of breaking in left to do. I did put the 1.5 inch servo arms on so I plan on wringing it out this weekend! If the wind god's can go mess up someone else's weekend and let me fly
