Thanks Tman i'll keep an eye on things the first couple flights. On the tensor i think i we were running a phoenix 10 or 20 (if they even make a 20) and one of the out runner motors... maybe it was the 370 i'll double check today. With a 2 cell TP lipo i was able to fly it with an 11x5 wood prop and nothing got warm. It has a 10x4.7 on it now and i really like the way it flies better with the smaller prop. Couldn't tell a big performance difference, but i like the way it slows down a little more when you throttle back.

I didnt know I had such a light plane- but then again I am using a 2208/34 instead of a geared motor.
I still need to be weight consiencious. When I get the right prop I am only pulling 18 oz. of thrust with a 14.70 oz. plane--That is almost not enough power.

I just need to be really carefull flying a tp 730 with a 10x5E. I dont really want to burn a hole in the side of my plane.

Hey Tman-- here are some pics of the area around the control horns where they pulled out-----Ugly huh

Completed the yak at the store today. It looked calm so i took it out for a spin. I haven't weighed it yet, i'll have to do that next time i see it. Flew good, faster than the tensor (obviously) and actually "flies", i love it. Need more throw on the elevator, especially UP, will have to adjust that next time i see it also. As soon as i was in the air the wind picked up and it was pretty squirly, especially for a new plane, i had my hands full for a minute or so then i got it under control After a few minutes of fairly tame flight, mostly 1/3 to 1/2 throttle with a few full power burnouts into the wild blue, i decided i was pushing my luck with the wind and i landed it. Motor was slightly warm, esc was borderline hot, lipo was slightly warm. Something isn't right. I'm using the exact recommended set-up in the manual too, i'm going to try it again with a 10x4.7 prop next and see if that helps things. Any suggestions? I'm new to the electric brushless/lipo power systems.

Park 400 920kv
E-flight 20amp esc
TP 1320 lipo
E-flight 11x4.7 prop

You should be okay, but to be safe you should get a watt meter.
It is normal for the batt and the motor to get warm(not to the point where you cant touch them)

If you dont want to buy a watt meter see if you can borrow one. You need to check and see if you are asking too much of your gear.
You need to experiment to find the right prop. All of this electrtic stuff depends on what prop you put on it.

The bigger the prop, the more current you draw.
To be safe you should probably move down on prop size and experiment with differnent diameters and pitches-- props are only like $2.50 each.
But for a good watt meter you are going to pay about $60

Not that bad son (Tylerman)... you got it to be strong now. I had the same problem with my elevator. That's why I put in the Robart pins, I could not make the CA hinges stay together, it kept delaminating the stab and splitting. You fly that 10x5E yet? Wish I had mine here in China with me, flying around doing 3D, these primitives would freak!

Whoo hooooo! Maiden flight complete!

Hacker A20-20l
Hacker X20 ESC
TP 1320 3s
Hitec HS55
10x4 APC

CG is 1" behind front spar. Needed a fender washer taped to the tail to get it there. TP and X20 in battery bay.

I used the provided rudder and aileron hardware, but made my own carbon fiber pushrod for the elevator. Definitely getting enough elevator, but need more aileron.
Went to local park that has a concrete basketball court on one end. Pointed it it into the wind, gave it full throttle, it rolled 10 feet and lifted off nicely. Needed a few clicks of up trim for hands off. Inverted flight needed just a little down.

Didn't time it, but probably got 12 minutes. This was after radio setup, and lots of "tweaking" on the bench. Took 75 minutes to recharge with Triton.

Winds were 5-10, and gusty. Didn't get to do much hovering, or harrier. Very tight inside and outside loops. Didn't do any knife edge yet. Roll rate is slower than I would like. I'll probably move the aileron pushrods into lower holes on the horn.

All in all, a very successfull flight. Lots of fun.

K

Yep, I flew it last night. It is a very delicate plane. It will fly like a beauty but you got to be carefull of how you treat it. The lazer cut foam is good but it does not have the membran over the foam like the Eflight Tribute. This makes it a bit less forgiving in a crash. I do like the cable control Idea. Just like the real thing it uses a cabled elevater and rudder system. The thing can be put togather in a hurry. WHen you take it out of the box there will be a extra instruction on the motor mount and some extra parts I dont think they included. It tells you to put the parts in before you install the motor. This is wrong. If you are going to mount a motor with the gearbox or a direct drive inside the fuse, you should wait till you have the motor inplace before you install the extra mount supports otherwise it is difficult to get the gearbox inside without breaking the mount supports you installed according to the manuel. Trust me, you can still mount the gearbox but it is very hard to get it passed the mount supports. You will see what I mean if you get it. IT is a nice plane and very light. The design reduces flex from motor to tail and gives a better airflow to the rear control surfaces. Buy also extra large servo arms. At least 3. This will give you more range of motion using the predesigned cable setup. My cat broke my Yak in half so I glued it back togather, Thank God For UFO glue. My girlfriend broke it yesterday as she was a bit mad at me for working late. I just glued it back togather, took a peice of foam from my old tribute and left the house and went flying in the dark.. Now that pissed her off. It is a good plane but I must say for overall Ruggad durability in crash testing the eflight tribute is the best I have ever seen. I have crashed into trees, barbwire fences, a horse and a car and the thing just kept going. All ya need is some ufo glue and tape to keep right on flying. Put ya a 370 or 400 brushless 4200kv, a phoneix 25, and a 11.1v 1900 lipo, for the 370, or the 2100 11.1v for the 4oo and you will have a ball.

I see what happened there, sorry about that. The one servo design is not a good one. Yep it saves you like 16-24dollars but you should just glue 2 servos on bottom of each wing, hook um up and you will have no more problems. The control surfaces are very large on this plane and for extreme speed and manuverability you really need one for each wing and a Y harness. THis will cure all your Ills.

Just picked one up tonight from the LHS. Taking everything out of my tensor and putting it in except upgrading to a TP 900 3s. I've only got the 370 outrunner to go in it, but hopefully it will fly decently like this. The Tensor came out to 10.1 oz with a TP 900 2-cell, and has been a great flyer. But I'm with Memo on the Tensor; fun but "fake" feel. I've been wanting something that flies more like a plane. I had been eyeballing this thing the last few weeks at the LHS. Read this thread today, and you guys sold me on it.

So, total setup:

Motor: Eflite 370 Outrunner
ESC: Phoenix 10
Servos: 3 Hitec HS-55's
Battery: TP 900 3s
Receiver: HS-555 (case removed)

Hopefully I can get it to come out light. Although I don't really know where I can save weight on this one..

The 370 outrunner will work with the Yak. It is the least powerful setup out of the three sutups that E-flite recemonds. The sutup you have is an indoor setup.

Ryanoose- I did think about using 2 servos but I thought it was pointless because my dads(Tman)before mine flew awesome with one servo. I just left it off.
If I did put 2 aileron servos on I could put 1 servo per wing, but really dont see the need for an extra .3 oz.
Flies great without it.

I have to keep my plane light---I am a tad bit limited to power(AXI 2208/34)
At 14.70 oz. I need to look for ways to lighten up.
Any Ideas?
1st I am going to pull the case off of my Rx(hitech electron 6) That'll save me .15 oz. at least.
2nd I need to find a shorter extention wire for my ESC. that'll save me a whopping .05 oz.

If any of you have Ideas on how to lighten up dont be shy.

The Yak Diet...

To lighten up, here are some things I will try...

1. Inside the Rx bay, cut out rectangles from the wing panel between the fuse walls. The Spars should hold things together well enough. Leave a 1/8" against the fuse walls. Put a thin depron panel where the Rx mounts. Keep at least 1/2" from the LE of the wing, and same for the back edge where the ailerons connect. The section behind the TE of the wing is totally dead weight. leave an 1/8" ledge around that area, and that's where the Rx panel should go.

2. Cut a cockpit web leaving small ribs and a nice top edge (maybe 1/4") inside the paint lines of the cockpit. Cover with clear box tape.

3. Shorten ALL servo wires to just reach.

4. Cut vent holes in the entire bottom edge of the fuse and Rx compartment cover. Cover with clear box tape.

5. Cut some rectangular holes in the horiz. stab and cover with box tape, top and bottom.

6. Make the the ESC wires longer from the PCB so there is not an extension cable to eliminate the plugs for the extension.

7. Install a mini antenna to eliminate all that antenna wire.

8. Remove the Rx case. Shrink wrap.

9. Cut a few rectangular holes in the wing, cover with tape top and bottom.

10. Find and install a light CF landing gear from another model. Fabricate aluminum axels.

11. If the servo case bottoms can be removed or trimmed without compromising mechanicals, do that.

I will try to see if I can get Ultracote to iron onto the Depron without distortion or damage. If this works, yehaaa, don't use box tape, cover with Ultracote.

May look a little funny, but could lose a good bit of mass... without compromise of strength or aerodynamics.

A couple questions for setting up my own yak when i get it...

Should i go with the e-flight park 400 outrunner, or try Esskay 400xt outrunner since its only $30 bucks?

And for speed controls my choices are the e-flight 20amp or the phoenix 10amp. The phoenix is just so much smaller its tempting to use it, but when i flew the yak at the LHS with the park400 and 20amp esc, the esc was getting pretty darn warm which makes me think the phoenix won't be near enough. I do think using that 11x4.7 was overpropping it, even though it was the recommended set-up.

The pheonix 10 will not be near enough to take care of your gear-- Move to a pheonix 25 & you will be good.

Tman-How do I shorten up wires. The kit is with me--Is it hard?

Here's some food for thought.......if you are hungry that is. This is my set up and it flys great. Lots of power, long run time, etc.

Motor: Eflite 400 Outrunner
ESC: 40amp brushless
Servos: 4Hitec HS-55's
Battery: TP 2100 3s
Receiver: JR770
prop: 11x4.7

Never heats up, Never cuts out and just flys and flys with 3D being the focus. I was a little hesitant at first with this combo, but after flying it I am very pleased.

Tylerman,

Yea, it is kinda difficult to make the servo cables. The crimp too doesn't work well. I had to crimp the wires with needle nose pliars, then solder for good measure. Then it was really difficult to plug wires into the connectors. So, you probably should not try, it is hard. We can do it later.

If someone could help me I would really appreciate it. I just got the yak 54 by eflite. Since I am new to flying. I am not sure about my system. I got the park 400 motor740k,the e-flite 20A brushless speed control the reciever is a Futuaba r114f micro. The battery is aThunder power 3 cell Li-polly 11.1volt at 2100mah. At 2100mah Is the battery to heavy? Also what prop should I buy?

Thanks for any help, charlie
