The reason why moving to a lipo can kill your motor faster is because of the elongated flight times. If you are throttle pumping on a lipo for 8 minutes you are going to overheat your motor. Just watch the heat this is the killer it isn't the lipos fault.

I have bought the Mystery Li-poly 7.4V Battery with the E-sky charger. My question is can I use my power source from My original charger. It is an 18V 1A power source that plugs into an adapter for a Nimh battery.

    Thanks

That's a good question. I've been using heat sinks on my main and tail motors forever. I also use high quality Arctic Silver heat sink compound for better heat dissipation. But... I've recently seen some temperature readings on a couple of a motors with and without using a heat sink, and the difference was less than 5° F for an aftermarket hot (or fast) motor, and only a couple degrees on a stock motor. I always assumed the heat sinks were doing some good, but I'm currently running without them to try it out and I'm not noticing any difference so far in the performance or lifespan of the motors. I guess the answer is, they can't hurt because they don't weigh much, but they probably don't help much, either. If you don't use a good heat sink compound, they probably make even less difference.

    Thanks Gary.

To be honest that was my impression also. my new motor gets very hot after 5 minutes hovering. i believe this is so because during hover you use more motor power then during normal flights/circuits.

    I don't think it would be a good idea.My e-sky charger says 10-15v.I think I would stay with that.How about a 12v vehicle battery?That would work.

The E-Sky charger just has a plug port like the old style nimh charger right? What's it listing it's power source as?

I have not recieved the charger yet, I hope to get it this week. Its the EK2-0851 charger. From what I can find it charges 7.4V and 11.1V li-poly batteries and I believe that the input is 13.5V but I am not sure. I have two power sources laying around the house. one as i decribed earlier and another that goes to 7.0V - 5A. will either of these work or should I purchase something else. Thanks

Interesting... on the tail motor on my bird, without the heat sink, it's very hot to the touch after about 10min of hover. With the heat sink it's just warm (and that's without heat sink compound).
