Yes, there is:
You need an analog input/output card for your computer and whatever video editing program you wish to use.
Pinnacle systems sells a Studio 9 version that comes with an I/O card that does analog, S-video, stereo and firewire. Looking at about $100 for the package.
I have it on my system but honestly have yet to try the thing other than the firewire connection which my Sony Digital 8 is equiped with.
One of these days I plan to burn some old VHS tapes to DVD just havent gotten around to it.

I just bought an RCA to USB adapter part #VA11A by www.x10.com on ebay for about $20. It has an RCA plug on one end and a USB on the other, I downloaded the drivers from x10 and it worked flawlessly. Most adapters I found online were around $70. Hope this helps.

Hey capt. Duc,

Is this it http://cgi.ebay.com/X10-USB-Video-Capture-Adapter-X-10-VA11A_W0QQitemZ5805902677QQcategoryZ48637QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem ?
Also, does it capture audio, or just video? Oh yeah, does it work with all camcorders that have the yellow video cable?

Thanks,

Matt

Thats the one, my camera doesnt capture audio so I can't answer that question. I just mounted it on top of the wing and beamed the video back down to my laptop. I would assume that if your camera does audio it would work. Hope this helps.

If it's only Hi-8 to the PC you're after, one alternative is to buy a used Digital8 camcorder. Most (possibly all, but I'd check) will do in-camera upconversion of Video8/Hi8 tapes to the DV format, so you can essentially threat them exactly as you would a digital tape at that point -- DV all through the rest of your toolchain. That's how I've dealt with my legacy tapes (my #2 camcorder is a D8 unit).

Connect a Hi8 camcorder outputs to a DV camcorder inputs. Play on the Hi8, record on the DV. Once it's on DV tape, you can firewire it to the PC. The Analog to digital converter in my DV camcorder did a great job and for me no additional hardware to purchase.
