Can someone tell me where the centerline for the engine for this plane should be? The instructions are worthless (all they had to do was include a couple of dimension). I assume there are supposed to be horizontal and vertical lines on the front of the firewall for the engine thrust line center, but mine did not come with any lines.
The holes for the fuel lines are also off.
I can wing it I guess, but I hate doing that.
If someone can just tell me where the center point on the firewall should be by measuring up from the bottom lip, that would be all I need.
Also, I had Century Jet move the upper nipple for the air retract kit they sell for this plane and it fits much better now. The old one had a nipple on the side and would have necessitated cutting the mounting rail to get it in, which is a no-no for me. They told me they are changing the config of their units for this plane based on my change.

Same here. I had to wing it. I left the rudder and elevators off so I could stand the plane on end and used the TAR method of engine alignment. And I also had to cut a new hole for the fuel tank and plugged the old one.

Robart Retract 609 HD 85degree - Would these work with the GSP Spitfire ??

I am picking up the kit tomorrow. First Warbird, have lots of stick time on pattern and other assorted planes. Thought this would be a good plane to start with.

I think those robarts ought to work. I used spring air 85deg on mine. I'm on my second spit. I think I'm gonna angle the struts a little forward. Had a slight nose over issue on the first one. Wasnt too bad, just once in a great while. Gonna raise the back end and recess the forward end of the retracts a little to keep it centered in the strut slot in the wing.

One other thing. I modified my retract mounts as was shown earlier in this thread.

I believe its the 104 gear set. Its 85deg with 3/16" struts. Have a look at http://www.retracts.com/prices.htm for info. I usually order my spring airs straight from the mfg. Nice people and sometimes you get a price break. I use spring airs on my 60 sized mustang thats been thru absolute hell trying to get the retract mount geometry right. Was constantly nosing over and breaking the mounts. Once I solved the nosing over problem the mounts were so mangled I had to remove them completely and start over. But at least the geometry will be right once fixed. AND the retracts always worked when they were supposed to. The spitfire didnt have enough hard time to tell but they're the same as whats in my mustang. I lost the spitfire when I flew thru the sun and couldnt see it any more. My spotter asked what the hell I was doing. I said I dont know, cant see it. He told me I'm in a spin about 100' up. And that was the end of it.

Engine and Cooling

Thanks for all the help with the retractable gear.

I plan to make an airintake and a large exit for cooling. Has anyone experienced cooling problems with this set up ?

Trying to make up my mind about a Saito 91 or 120 four stroke. The reviewer Minn Flyer that posted the Spitfire review on RCU stated any .91 would work well, but most of the post in this tread are using a 120. Hmmmm. I plan to fly scale like.

1.20 4-str is definately the way to go with this bird. I'm using an ASP 1.20 FS with a MAS 15x8. This setup flies very scale like and sounds superb.

I'm running a Magnum 1.20 4c with a 15 x 8, I did originally buy an OS 108 fsr+ a custom bisson pitts style muffler, but I got bagged out for running a two stroke in a war bird hence peer pressure urged me to buy the 4c, the only other thing I did was replace the cyno hinges with dubro LS hinges..this wasnt such a good idea as I now have a large gap between the surfaces , luckily Ive only done that to the alierons but they stick out slightly past the TE, thinking of buying another wing kit and redoing the hinges back to normal and maybe adding a better retract system ...I like some of the work you guys have done here... I just love this spit..pity about the canopy though!!

I would not go with a 91 in this plane. I have a Saito 100 in mine and consider it to be marginal. Plus, a lot of weight will be needed up front with a 91. A 120 would work much better.
