I need a basic radio for my new trex, what would you guys recomend. I want it cheep but I know in r/c you get what you pay for... Im not going to be doing any tricks or any of that... Just flying around and doing tuch and goes and talking to my self like im the pilot I currently own a 3pk for my regular r/c cars, and like futaba, but all of my servo's are JR, so I could stand a JR radio also. I realy dont like hitec so if possible could we stay away from them. Thanks,
-Wes

Hi Wes,
The servos are interchangeable.
If you like JR, get JR. If you like Futaba, get Futaba. They are both very good transmitter lines.
You need to look at functionality. The Futaba 7ch will give you what you need to fly helis (and fixed wing) If you can afford it, the 9CH gives you more room to grow.
I am positive that JR offers transmitters with just as much in functionality.

Cheap and heli dont mix. I am sure you can fly the Trex with a cheap radio but how much fun would it be if it flew bad due to the radio. You dont need a 14MZ but not all radios have a user friendly pitch curve. In Futaba land the 9C is pretty much the most bang for the buck. I have about 18 planes and 3 helicopters and so far I dont see the need to go more expensive on the Tx. I had lesser radios previously and would not go less than the 9C even if I had it to do over. JR makes nice stuff and I am sure they have a unit targeted directly at the 9C but I dont have any experience with them so cant comment on that aspect.

I know you said you want to stay away from Hitec but I have an Eclipse 7 and am very satisfied with it. The nice thing about Hitecs is that you can get a Spectra module (not sure if Futaba & JR make those) so you'll only need one radio for all your planes, helis, etc ... and no more crystal swapping!

Uhh... I just looked up that 9c... its cool and all... but its kinda waaay out of my budget. I know I cant low ball somthing like this, but im not going to own any more r/c airplanes or helio's just a trex. So will that cheapen in? Right now im looking at about 600$ for the whole set up (the trex comes with a motor right?) (and does it come with any servo's?) Thanks,
-Wes

It all depends on a Kit you get (bare, + motor, + servos, etc..) but you should be able to get a complete setup (mostly Align products i.e. Align 25A ESC, Align 400L motor, Align gyro...) with a new radio and some HS-55s +1 HS-50 for ~$650

High end Futaba offers sythesizer TX module and RX. Now I use my 9Z for 4 different helicopters, 2 power gliders, 3 airplanes and 2 ornithopters. Each model has its own rx (mostly Hitec Electron 6 CH with any channel crystal because I can set it from 9Z, so I named my model like Trex-33 (crystal is channel 33), Hornet -21, Eolo-14.

If you can save a few more bucks and get the one with ccpm feature, you will be set for future Trex upgrade too.

Cheaper is better???????????

I have the Futaba 7chp. It is a lot like the 9c but a lot cheaper. You can get it without servos for around $170. It seems to do the throttle and pitch curves, and even controls my GY401 very easily.

Oh, that's on a Trex as well with an Electron 6 receiver.

Just for comparison, you can get the Hitec Eclipse 7 for ~$150 and it does support CCPM (I'm pretty sure it does), has both Positive and Negative shift capability, and a spectra module (which allows you to change the channel without changing crystals). I know Futaba makes great radios but I never tried one so I can't comment on it (and I was in a same boat as u are few months back). After my "research" I got the Optic 6 Tx for all the bells and whistles it came with but had problems with the software (throttle channel didn't work properly) so then I upgraded to Eclipse 7 and never looked back.

Look into the JR6102 with the Ultra Light on board equipment. Reasonably low price and includes good equipment for micro electrics:

FWIW, I use a JR8103 and love it. I fly my Raptor 50 and all my planes with it. I amy get a Trex in the near future and it will fly that as well.

Im not going to be flying with other people, so all that spektrum stuff, thats pretty much useless to me. Im serously just looking for a baaaasic radio. Nothing fancy, I dont even care if it has a screen.

And that's where most people make their biggest mistake. They will buy a new heli with all the bling bling but will get a cheap radio. IMHO you should get yourself a quality radio (think of it as a future investment) with at least 5 point throttle/pitch curves (to my knowledge there aren't any "screen-less" radios that will do that). Just consider what would happen if your "less expensive" radio glitched while you were flying your rexy.. in my opinion it's not worth to take a chance

I went to the LHS today, seems everyone there uses eather the dragonfly or the trex... Although he quoted me a price of around 900$ to get it all goin' where as the dragonfly would be around 300$ But he said the dragonfly wouldnt fly to well outdoors, which would make the helio useless to me I guess I will just save up some more. . . dang ol' exspensive hobby
