Hi Guys,
Just got my P51D kit today and was wondering if any of you have put working retract doors on yours? I am looking for a cost effective way to do it. Both inner and outer doors would be nice, but because I am on a budget, outer doors may just have to do. Please let me know, and I will be starting a build thread too, so any of you who have built the model before and any of you who just want to follow, you guys have something to look forward to. I will take any advice during the build as well. Thanks.

Adam

I used sheet aluminum. It worked flawlessly and sat flush in the wing when retracted! JB Weld will bond tubing to the inside of the strut, you will need a small snip of tubing. Use Dubro plastic hinges with the removable cotter pin. Tack one side of the hinge to the retract housing about 3/8" away from the strut. Retract the gear, apply ca the the face of the hinge that will go against the strut cover and align the opening. Once you are happy with the alighnment, cover it with JB Weld. Robard makes offsets for strut covers so I suggest you pick some up. Music wire and these strut clamps will allow the door to open and give wheel clearance. I wish I had pictures to show you but I don't and the plane crashed last spring. I'll build another one though, it was awesome! Good luck with yours.

Thanks buddy for the info. Sorry to hear about the loss of that awesome plane. Started mine last night after a fight with my girlfriend (not the best of ideas). Went to my workshop and made about the most amateur mistake I can think of. Glued the leading edge of the h. stab flush with the ribs instead of centered vertically. I did some modding, used some microballoons, and its back to what it should look like, only a lot uglier because of that marron color of my microballoons. (Why do I have to be a perfectionist?). airfoil looks like it should though, so that is good. I will post some pictures on a build thread. Hopefully no one makes fun of my stupid mistake. I was up till 3 am trying to fix it because it was buggin me so badly! Talk to you soon.

Mine had the same fate as shihtzutan but it did get some pictures. After building up the wings befor sheeting I installed the retracts (CJM) and made sure I had all the clearances squared away I covered the bottome of the wing and then glassed the area around the doors and then after drying and setup time I traced and cut out the doors and they were perfectly formed to the shape of the bottom of the wing. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_424529/mpage_1/key_p%252D51%252Cproject/anchor/tm.htm#424529 is a good link to go to for this plane.

Good luck.

P.S. I just bought another one but haven't started it yet.

Hey super67 that is almost the same set up I had! Didn't have the wheel covers though, it looks like you are actuating them with an air cylinder, is this so? Explain. The use of century jet retracts is a poor choice however even though it's what I had. I won't make that mistake again! They are held together with rivets and they will lossen up to the point where you will have to drill them out and replace them with small machine screws. I'm not crazy about Robart either, but they are easy to work on and customer service from Robart is 10 times better than Century. Try aluminum sheet next time, it cuts and bends easily and is very thin. You are using the strut clamps I was describing. I think that color scheme is one of the most popular schemes on the Mustang. I'm going to make sure the next one doesn't look like anyone elses.
