I thought I would share my experience with this aircraft as there seem to be an interest in prop jets as a way of getting into higher performance aircraft.

The instructions included pictures which helped even though they could have been a little more clear. The only gripe I have with the plans is that they don't show a recommended equipment layout.( I at least like a starting point)

The plans also show 2 dorsal fins to mount under the fuse but the T-45A like this is modeled after only has one fin. The BAE version the Hawk has 2. So unless you want to model the british version, save yourself some time and only build one and mount it in the center on the botton as the real T-45A. Much easier to cover that way also.

When I initially unrolled the plans, even though I was a seasoned builder, I had to review the plans closely. The fuse is built up using sq. stock and then sheeted which results in a very strong unit. I narrowed the jet intakes 1/4" on each side to aid in streamlining the fuse. I also angled the intake "fronts" 30 degrees for the same reason. The fuse is great as far as room to put anything anywhere. I put 2 elevator servos in the tail under a hatch, and the nose retract, throttle and rudder servos in the wing saddle area. The only problem I had was in the fuel department as I was only able to fit an 8oz tank in that compartment along with the nose retract. I may look into a header tank arrangement to try and increase the fuel capacity.

The tail surfaces are built up and sheeted. I added some beef in the center of the built up horizontal stabilizer and cut it in 2 longitudinally to add 5 degrees of anhedral to each side of the stab. I sandwiched the stabs between the tail block on top and a cross grained block under the stabs that fit nicely between the fuse sides. The torque rod set up from the factory really lends itself to this mod and it really looks good on the jet. The rudder is a pull-pull set up and it has real authority in the air!

I used Dave Brown retracts as recommended and ended up with a reliable system, but it takes some patience to set up.

I used standard BB Futaba servos throughout with the exception of the throttle and retract servo.

I finished off the cockpit with Williams Bros 2" Military pilots and some graphics that I copied off of the computer. I coverd the model in Monocote and powered it with a Jett 50. That engine is a HOSS plane and simple. Throttle response is rapid without hesitation. I flew the first flights rich with a Bolly 10.5x5 prop turning 16,500 tached on the ground.

My plane finished out at 8.25lbs with no additional weight required for balance.(so many places to put equipment)

My Tomhawk has a very realistic rotation and takeoff and the gear sucking up just looks super. FLying like a jet is where this plane excels as rolls are crisp and realistic. Knife edge is awesome. The large fuse side allows you to easily climb in knife edge at a fast or slow speed. It does exhibit roll coupling with rudder application in knife edge. (I'll mix it out) No pitch coupling was observed.

Anyone looking for a very nice prop jet will be pleased with this one, even though it is a little work. I would add a bulkhead at the rear of the cockpit area if I built another instead of cutting the canopy long as shown on the instructions.(It would just look better.

All in all I am very satisfied with this aircraft!

For your information,

Mike Morgan

With a heat gun in hand I was able to reform the rear of a new Dubro fuel tank to clear the retractable nose wheel and now have 12oz of fuel on board. Just the thing for that Jett 50!

Unfortunatly I had a problem with my Dave Brown Nose gear retract as it seems that the steering arm is attached to a bushing that is only staked in place....I wish I would have known that. I lost direction control and hit a safety net post and notched the wing....luckily it hit between ribs and stopped just short of the spars. It is fixable.

I now have the roll coupling dialed out and the low knife edge passes are a sight to see!

I have the Original UK version of this kit. Built by Aerotek UK.
The kit is of the BAe Hawk, in Red Arrows colours. Glass Fuz, sheeted foam wings. Engine .40-.61
I'm building it at the moment. Intended to install retracts, even bought them, but am going to fly it first with fixed. I think this kit is a little more scale, however i have not seen the MH hawk in detail.
I have attached a piccy of how mine should look when it's finished. Hope you like it!
Happy new year!

Hello Mike
I bought the Toimhawk kit and am in the process to gather all the hardware. Could you kindly list out what you bought seperately fr completion? Also specifically I would like info on the trike retract system and type used with model number/name. What servo did you use fr the retract gear?
Many regards and thanks
