I've looked through this thread and why is it that none (or atleast none of the ones I've seen) are 4WD?

I have john deer weed eater engine laying around and a maxx but I won't be doing this project any time soon.

There are a number of maxx gassers on this thread that are 4WD. The reason most aren't is because if you are using the stock transmission in the stock position, you have to stretch the chassis by a large amount to get the motor to fit. If you move the transmission as far forward as possible, you only have to stretch the chassis by a small amount, but there is no way to connect the tranny to the front diff. Now, i know there are ppl who have managed 4wd without stretching the chassis a lot (I believe Dr Honda was one of them), but it's a bit more difficult and maybe beyond the standard backyard bashers (I fall right smack bang into the middle of this category) skills who doesn't have access to CNC mills, lathes etc.

Anyone having problems with the stock tmaxx diffs? I just got my gasser going again with a new whipper snipper motor, and now i've broken 2 diffs in the last 2 tanks. The problem is the plastic casing that supports the small bevel gears, the groves that hold the gears in place just get chewed up. Does anyone have a mode or replacement idea they can share?

Cheers

They sell aluminum differential housings for the T-Maxx. Sounds like that should fix your problem. I not sure what the cost on them is though.

I havent done anything else to mine yet. I need to buy a few things for it so i can make my own transmission, and I have decided im not buying anything else for it until i get back to working. I havent been working for a while because we have been having so much rain, but it should pick up shortly. When it does, Ill get back to making some progress on it.

Here is an aluminum differential housing on Ebay. Not cheap, but should fix your problem:

Thanks for link. The casing seems to be ok, its platsic cup inside the diff thats the problem. But, after checking out the link I came across this:

Alu Diff Cup

I have ordered it, hope it holds up better. Also, I found due to the truck being so top heavy it leans too much and flips easy (thats with the hardest shock spring set I could find and other combos). I ordered some sway bars to see how they go.

Thanks again

Cool, I have never seen the diff case built into the bulkhead, its a great idea. As I stated above, the diff casing is fine at the moment, the problem is the plastic cup inside the diff. Anyway, I was looking at getting an alu bulkhead and diff case, and the combined option seems to be cheaper. The only thing that concerns me is if its more difficult to work on the rear end with this setup. I can see myself trying to get the rear end off and diff gears flying everywhere.

ok i just finished a whole gallon of gas through my maxx and i broke a cvd. thats what i get for building a ramp. the tire flew waaaaaaaaaay in the weeds . 5 min fix and back in action . before my last run i did an upgrade. i ordered a new front cover for my motor. $26 . it has the clutch bell and bearing . eliminated alot of wobble. this time instead of pressing a gear on i threaded the shaft and attached my gears sandwiched between 2 nuts that i cut down to about 3/16 thick. this is the best set up ive come up with yet . not that the other set up was bad but this way i have infinite adjustability front and back on the length of the shaft sticking out of the clutch housing on the motor. wich makes for a perfect lineup. it also makes up for the fact that the slots i cut for mounting the motor arent exact. now i think i got it just the way i want it . adjustable in every way so i can gear it up or down and line it up perfectly. if u got any questions hit me up. the only problems im having is it dont have headlights and i cant do this for a living. remember this fellas the guy that came up with the stock t max was just a man and he wasnt more of a man than me . so if that guy can do it then i can do it better.

the only tools i used to do mine was a 41/2'' grinder a drill and a jigsaw

Some updated pics with new motor installed. Had to get a little abstract with the throttle/brake servo mount due to limited space.

Its a crappy Talon 28cc whipper snipper motor. I wasn't having any luck finding a suitable 2nd hand motor, so bought a new W/S to donate the motor to the gasser. The clutch bell arrangement on this motor is much bigger than the old motor and so took a little persuading to get it in. Also, the carb and spark plug stick out a lot more than my old motor, so the hummer body I had for it doesn't fit anymore.
