I am finally back building my Dynaflite SE5a! I would guess most of you building one have flown it and lost interest in this thread. It is such a great thread, I wanted to bring it forward so "I" could continue. I attempted to bring the Dynaflite SE5a thread forward in Aerodrome, but see that the moderators have locked it. I started a new one at the Aerodrome; but, there has been no response.

My SE is basically framed-up at this time. I am building details for it now. I have used a short 1/2 inch diameter dowel with scribed in grooves in it for the Vickers gun. This is only as long as the barrel as the gun's breech was buried in a fairing, which I have carved from a block of balsa. Right now, I am working on the scale engine head and exhaust system details. I am using built-up balsa wood for the engine blocks and valve covers and will be using wood dowel pins and plastic tubing for the exhaust pipes. After these detail parts are complete, but, not attached to the fuse, I will finish sand and start the covering process. I am interested in using Solartex to cover, maybe their PC-10 and antique for flying surface undersides.

Anyone else still interestsed in this thread?

Hi I still watch this forum and intend to post my new SE5A BUILD. I have not had a good year since returning from china and have not had the time to finish modifying the plans. The mods include lowering the top wing by modifieing the centre section and strut angles, modifying the lower centre section ( it should have a much deeper cut out in the c3entre section.) and leveling the top of the fuse, the real SE5a does not slope down to the nose.

On the one you see the photoes of I had the exhaust running out of the scale pipes. Looked realy good at Idle.

Now where did I put that plan ( when I finish it I will provide tiff files if desired.

I am thinking of discontinuing the thread at WW1 Aero and talking about my build of this airplane here. WW1 Aeroplanes has a goofy policy wherein they lock threads which sit idle for a few months.

A method I have come up with over the years to help get detail parts to conform to the surface they will be mounted to, is to use adhesive backed sand paper. I stick a piece larger then the detail part I am going to mount to the fuselage at the location where the part will be mounted. Then I draw the part back wards and for wards over that area, until I have made contact around the periphery of the part. If the part is large, it helps to hollow the part out with a wood carving gouge. This system works very well and will make parts conform to compound curves. If the sand paper is course enough, the job goes fairly quickly. I have used this system to get my engine blocks and the Vickers gun fairing to fit over the forward turtle deck on my SE5a.

Do you have variations of this system which work good for you? Do you have other little tid-bits of information you would like to share, such as this. If so, by all means do so!

Flyboy,

I have this very same plane and she is a wonderful flier and very easy to control. Use cloth to cover this bird with. It looks great and makes the model look like a real WW1 bird. I used sig koverall on mine with nitrate dope. I than used rustolem paint and sealed the plane with a good spray polyurethane. I will most some pics later today when I get home.

I take it you didn't try to match the PC10 color of the original ?... What color Rustolium did you use...

I noticed Arizona Models has a scale 1/5 cockpit interior kit available for the SE5a... Has anyone seen one of these ?... They also have the machine guns with brass ammo belts etc... Lots of possiblitles

Mode One..
I don't think anyone over at the AIrodrome really knows what is going on .....

Ironcross,

I used the Rustoleum Military Colors. Olive Drab for the top of the fuselage and wings and sand for the bottom of the fuselage and wings. It look pretty much like the plane on the cover of the box. I did not go into very much detail like you are going to do. You'll love the way the plane fly's. I have mine powered with a Saito 91s using a 14x6 prop. She fly's very scale like. Nice to watch in the air.

I wasn't aware Rustolium had military colors Have to remember that... Glad to hear you .91 flys it... I am planning on using a Mag .91 4s.. I got 4 of these back when they were on sale from Tower for 145.00 bucks... They will turn an APC 14X6 around 10k and I run them around 9.8k which is right where I run my Saito's too so I figure they are pretty close to equal...

The Magnum will fly this plane just fine. Infact I had a magnum 91fs on it at first. The only reason I have the Saito 91s on it now is I got the Saito back from horizon hobbies after getting it repaired and I wanted a good steady plane to test it on. I used an APC 14x6 on my Magnum as well.

Iron Cross, I've looked into Arizona's stuff and it all seems very expensive to me.

I was considering using solartex's PC-10 however, it really dosn't look brown enough to me. So, now I'm considering Solartex antique white or Coverite's antique white and painting the PC-10 using Warbird Colors PC-10. I'm still up in the air over the covering and may even use Koveral.
