It’s Friday evening, I’ve been in the basement and finally getting down to covering my SE5a. I have the rudder and the fin covered with the antique Super Coverite I decided to use for covering material. I found Super Coverite to have a savings over Solartex. At a similar quantity, Coverite cost 89 cents per square foot whereas Solartex was $1.13 per square foot. I ended up with 56.25 square feet of Coverite and will have a bit of material left over. I would not have had enough to completely cover the plane with the similar roll of Solartex. Albeit, I could have had colored Solartex and Super Coverite only comes in the Antique color. So, I will need to paint the PC-10, something I am O.K. with, as the Olive Drab available from Solartex never looked right for PC-10 and Solartex appears to not be making their PC-10 anymore.

Anyway, the covering process is going good! I haven’t used Coverite in over 10 years and am amazed at how easy the material is to apply! It goes around compounds like the rudder and fin outline curves very easy! Using it is akin to putting on an old pair of shoes, it is comfortable and easy to work with. I like the antique color, also. I’ve been off the last two and a half weeks as the place I work has been closed down. As I have said, I was hoping to get the covering done. However, as in all things in life, I‘ve found there is always more work to do, to get a project to where I’m satisfied to move on to the next step. I’m there now and what I’ve covered so far looks good to me.

I have concerns about the direction the hobby is taking. More and more R/Cers seem to not be building kits! This really saddens me, as I get such enjoyment from building (read the Stafford thread). Building really centers me. It is a release from the day to day grind. But I know if kits cease to be, I will simply build scratch from plans, my own or others.

Dynaflite SE5a Guys, this seems to be getting pretty one sided!

I received my S.E.5a as a Christmas gift, I love this plane and it is very useful this thread to help me building my kit, I have another plane on the bench but is almost ready so I’d like to join this thread and post my building advance if you allow me to do.
Thanks.

Although I did not start the thread and joined in fairly late, I have sorta been trying to get action on it again. You are most welcome to join in!

Well, my plane is covered! I'm happy with the Super Coverite I applied. People tell me Super Coverite is obsolite when compaired to Solartex. Having not used Solartex, I really can't say. Solartex is more expensive and it appears they have dropped their PC-10 color. So, to compair, I totaled up the amount of antique colored covering I needed and compaired price. Super Coverite won hands down and I have quite a bit left over for the next WW1 project. They claim Solartex goes around compound curves very easily. This might be, however I found Super Coverite to be very easy in this respect, also.

I'm attempting to come up with a way to simulate the lacing on the fuse sides, and will let you know if I come up with a method that works.

Everything will get a coat or two of Nitrate Dope, Then the natural linen undersides of the upper and lower wings will get a coat or three of Butyrate Dope. I think I'll go to the hardware store and pick out a latex color, close to my interpretation of PC-10 and use this for the color coats.

Nuff for now!

I don't have a digital camera, so posting photos is a long-costly process! Some day I will step into the 90s and have one.

With all the glowing opinions of Solartex, I suppose I have to try it. However, I'm a bit obstinant! When I know how something works and it has never let me down, I tend to stick with it. I guess after having been involved in the hobby as long as I have, that's how a person can get. Quite frankly, I'm obstinant enough that people pushing a product can make me go in the complete opposite direction! With all the bad talk about Monokote, I'd love to give it a try, again, to see for myself!

I would guess if you pull the sheeting off, pin it down and re-sheet it ,it will be straight when you pull it off the building board. I don't think you'll need to wet it out.

The covering comment had nothing to do with you, some others were shooting down my using and promoting Super Coverite and not Solartex.

The thumbnail photo you posted looks like a huge 7/8ths to full scale balsa model sitting on your driveway in front of your home. Only upon blowning it up, doe's it become apparent it's sitting on a tramp! What kit/model is that?

Nope! Still working on my SE5a. However, I just received a set of Plans from CT Davies over in Germany for a 1/5th scale Sopwith Pup, I will be starting this as soon as the SE is done!
