Mode One,

My SE kit just arrived from Tower and as soon as I finish my current project I will be starting. Hopefully a couple of weeks. I would also like to lower the upper wing and was wondering if you could explain a little how you did it. It appears to me that just cutting the cabane struts shorter will change the spot on the upper wings where the attachment tabs will go. How did you get around this problem?

Along with my kit came a GP incidence meter that I purchased just for this project.

Thanks
Jim

Yes named after an Arch Angel and of Irish decent You get three Ms in a row as my initials.
Your friend could try Col Taylor Models in Wagga Wagga on 02 6925 6600. I know they had a third scale pup kit last year. They may get one in for your friend or he could order it straight from Balsa USA himself. A word of caution though if the kit is over $500.00 AUD he may have to pay import duty.
Yes we have weight restrictions. Any plane over 7 Kg has to be inspected and passed by a certified inspector. The certification lasts three years. Full details can be gained at
( http://www.maaa.asn.au/mop/procedures/MOP015%20-%20Proc%20HEAVY%20MODELS%20%2022%20April%202005.pdf )

You are mistaken Prop Nut, Their is no such thing as to many WW1 Models!

I left the aluminum attachment tab placement in the locations Dynaflite designed and changed the cant and rake of the cabanes so they would meet them in the lower positions. Because they are perpendicular to the fuselage centerline from the side view, the forward Cabanes, only cant out more then as designed. The aft cabanes both cant out more and are raked forward more. Other then shortening the interplane struts, they are the same. I did all this by drawing a full scale mock-up of what I wanted in side and front views on the back of the fuselage plans. The plywood cabane socket parts need to be slightly modifed, to allow the change in angles.

You could also keep the cabane angles and sockets the same as designed by Dynaflite, and move the plywood ribs for the Aluminum tabs in closer. You might need to make new ones, because the aft cabanes would meet the wing farther aft.

If you want, I could send you a line drawing showing the new angles from the side and front. They are rudimentery, however. I could FAX or mail. Send me an email, if you want to do this.

At the moment, I seem to be stuck on the age old PC10 thing. I'm going to paint with acrylic/latex paint. I need to come up with a sample of the color I want, to take to the paint store so they can match. I've tried mixing O.D with brown, red and yellow, yellow ocher and red and brown and nothing seems to get close. The mixtures seem to be too brown or too green. Of course, it's not just the colors to mix, but the proportions to mix them.

Any suggestions?

Try Mick Reaves Models at (mick@mickreevesmodels.co.uk) he has ( "PC10" paint. Authentic Khaki Brown. For british WW1 aircraft.
125 ml .£3.50. Aerosol £7.50 ) I believe this was matched to a section of real sopwith pup! I suggest you get some and have it color matched.
Mick is a real helpfull fellow, I am sure he can help.

Still dying to see some picks.

Both suggestions are good ones, just a tad rich for my tastes. I only need a pint of paint and the shipping for either producer is almost more then the paint. I'm still mixing. Since this isn't a significant scale undertaking, I will likely settle for something less then perfect. However, the color goes along ways towards making the bird look better.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Try printing the color chart from Warbirdcolor on your PC the color might not be perfect but perhaps it would be good enough to match at your local paint shop.

Fly em, just dont fly them into the ground!

I second that. Print the color, then match it at HomeDepot. Worked great for my Sopwith Pup.

How about L&M Fleet Supply? Nearest Home Depot is 60 miles away. I truly live in small town USA. However, a Walmart Superstore is opening sometime this month in Park Rapids, MN. Walmart's decision to open a store in this town of just over 5,000 posted population has made me re-think the intelligence of Walmart's Management.

Most stores offering paint have computer mixing equipment, so I don't think it matters if it's a national chain, or not. Again, thanks guys!

Done deal! Per the color suggestions of BobH in the other SE5a thread, I came up with a suitable PC10 mix and brought it to L&M Fleet Supply of Park Rapids. They actualy had a sample that matched close enough for a Dynaflite SE5a stand-way-off-scale paint job, so I'm good to go.

Sometimes I can make a job bigger than it really is!

Well it would appear that once again I have been shown the real way to be an amateur in the building arena. Mode One........ I can't thank you enough for the advice on building my Busa DV11............Have moved forward in the build and now on the downside of it. Youe details are truelly works of art. The Lewis I saw far exceeded the looks of some others offered out there. Keep us informed on your build. Oh and by the way come in an borrow a digital an show these people your work! We should throw that Dawn Patrol idea out here too. P@

Biffett, Stop it now, your making me blush! You want to see real scale building visit the SE5a 1/6th Scale Scratch Build or Pfalz DIII resources in RC Scale Aircraft!

This is the first time I have come across Mr. Biffett in this forum! Do you come here often, Big Boy?

Yes...........Mode One, I must keep tabs on the masters in our midst. Seriously......have been reading up on the se5 because of the conversation with the Grand Rapids group. You all know who you are. Looking forward to warm weather and a chance to see you all again. Say hi to Jerry for me. But I must say it is a pleasure to read a forum that is not filled with "Why was'nt this done at the factory". To be with a group of real builders is always an educational thing...........learning how to make guns for less and how to weather paint schemes is nice to know. I'm not that good a builder to be sure...........but I can say I try. Damn leading edges will be the death of me though. P@
