Well I guess I will just have to find a new source of glow fuel. I was kind of worried about running the 91 inverted in this plane but I went ahead and installed it inverted in my revamped U-Can-Do and it ran perfectly fine. Would idle as long as I wanted and as long as it was primed, flipped started on first try. Using a Bisson inverted in cowl muffler also.

Construction has renewed on the SE. Tail feathers are done. Bottom center wing section is done. Should maybe finish the Top wing center section tonight. I have decided not to try to change the upper wing location as this is my first bipe of this size and I dont want to make a mistake.

Now to covering. I have been considering a fabric and paint finish for this plane. Normally, I like to use materials that I can find locally which means improvising with some unorthodox methods. For the SE, I was thinking that I might try some Polyester dress liner and seal it with polycrylic. Then airbrush with craft paint. Finally spraying a clear polyurathane over the top for fuel proofing. I have heard of others using dress liner but I have not tried it before. I have used the craft paints on a plane that was glassed with polycrylic then used clear polyurathane for fuel proofing that turned out really well and has been very durable. A whole lot more durable than paint over film.

Has anyone following this thread used dress liner to cover a plane? If so please post comments and recommendations. Also, do you know of a heat sensitive adhesive I could use to put it done that would be locally availabe? I have seen some fabric glues in the sewing department at Walmart that look promising.

Also, I have taken some pics of my progress if anyone would like to see them.

Thanks
Jim

Jim, I covered mine with dress lining. It went pretty good. The dress lining has problems with the edge unraveling, this is due to the fact that it is not preglued nor covered with a color layer that will make the thread hold fast. I used BalsaRite applied over the raw wood, I did not thin it but wish in hindsight that I had as it is pretty thick out of the can. Shrinks great, takes some hard abuse. I think you will like it. Someone told me that I should have sprayed it beforehand with something to lock the threads....it slips my mind what they recommended though. One last thing, it is very pourous and takes many many coats of finish to seal.

David

Thanks guys. I think I will do some experiments with the dress liner and see how it goes.

Here are some pics of what I have so far.

Figured out that if I load one at a time then go back and add another through the edit function I can get more per post.

Mode one came back before I was finished. I have built several small electric bipes but this is the first large one. Its the same as the small ones just with bigger pieces of wood.

Top sheeting on center top wing section is glueing down as I upload pics.

I'm thinking of buying one of these. Any recent photos of completed models? I like the idea of shortening the cabanes/struts to lower the top wing a little. Has it made a difference in the flying qualities?

There is a photo of mine at a mall show on page 17 of this thread. I lowered the top wing of mine to a more scale location. I think I lowered it about 1 3/8th inch. The wing is at the same stagger location so the cabanes needed to be adjusted for rake (fore and aft angles) and splay (increase in outward angle at the top attachment points). I have drawings of these new angles. If interested, PM me and I will FAX this drawing to you.

I found the kit to be a fun and easy build. The plans and instuctions are good and the wood supplied was good. I also modifide the wing tips, I didn't like the partial rib fan shapes Dynaflite used to build up the forward wing tip.

I have not flown mine, yet. Interest in flying has taken a drastic decrease this past summer. Some of this is due to my particular situation at this time in life and some of it is simply a lack of interest in flying on my part. Sorry, I can't tell you whether reducing the gap was a good decision or not. However, since the real one and models of it down through the years have flown fine with a more scale gap, I can't see any reason it won't be fine.

Mcubed has lots of flight time on his and I think he lowered the top wing.

I did see your photos as I had a leisurely read through the thread yesterday. I like it. I'm going to get one, just waiting for Tower to email me a discount offer. Waiting for the right one. I know it was mentioned here somewhere but how many rolls of covering should I get?

Thanks,
Mike

I used Super Coverite, which is only available in antique color. It looks right for the doped and varnished undersides of brittish airplanes. I think there are three sizes of rolls and I bought the middle sized one. I still have some left over. If using another manufacturers, compare roll sizes. I painted mine with latex mixed at the store to match a color sample I made from various colors to come as close to PC10 as my eyes could determine. Then the whole was sprayed with polyurathane varnish to protect from glow fuel. Mine is powered with a Saito 1.00. I used two aileron servos in the lower wing with carbon fiber pushrods to the upper aileron.
