Hi Jeb
Yes I lowered the top wing by about 30mm I also flattened the nose from about 100mm in front of the cockpit, and put in the vickers gun cowl, also I put in 2 extra top formers in the fuz rear of the cockpit to strenghten the fuz stringers, made some scale like U/C with suspension,I din't use O rings for this but something that is dear to are hearts here in NZ and that is sheep castration rings.

Hi:
Finally I have started this kit (Box was collecting dust for more than one year) I have concluded the tail pieces and the center of the bottom wing, and things are moving now. I have noted that many of you lowered the upper wing. If I just cut the wing struts the wing will be lowered and a little to the back of its original position, what should I do to accurately lower the upper wing and maintain its original position (front-rear axis)?

Alfredo.

What I did, was mount the tabs which all the wing struts attach to in the original positions shown on the plans. However, I bent the tabs for the Cabane struts at a sharper inward angle, as this is the place where most of the modifications occure. The front cabane struts will have to be splayed out more, because of the lowering of the wing. The rear Cabane struts will need to be splayed out the same amount as the front ones and also raked farther forward to meet up with the tabs. in their new lowered position. Flip one of the plans over, and draw it all out using the new dimesnions. It doesn't have to be fancy, just enough to get the new angle you will need, so you can adjust the strut pockets.

Why Dynaflite raised the wing so high is beyond me!

Thanks Mode One thanks for your help, I will be drawing a new big paper sheet over the plans to get the desired placement for the cabane struts (degrees), I only build on Fridays, it is the day when my wife and kids leave me “home alone” for about three hours, so this far I have accomplished the tail sections, both center wing panels and also both left wing panels.
I will post some pictures as soon as I can.

Wing panels are ready now, Next step is cutting the aileron frames from the main wings. I was wondering if some of you used the William Bros. machine guns and which size should they be?
Thanks.

I just finished building two William's Bros. Vickers MGs. My latest project is a 1/4th scale Balsa USA Nieuport 28 and therefore I used the 1/4th scale Vickers models. They went together very easily and produce excellent results! (For a day, here, I thought I was responding to my other thread on the Nieuport)! I used their wheels however on my SE5a. To bad 1/5th scale isn't more popular. It would be great if William's Bros. would come out with 1/5th scale Spandaus and Vickiers.

The Dynaflite SE5a is about 1/5 scale, quarter scale guns are to big. I scratch built both the vickers and the lewis guns for mine. Arizona Model Aircrafters make a 1/5th Vickers & Lewis Kits as well as the forster mount for the lewis gun. Have a look at there site.

I think the lewis gun and mount finish the SE5A kit off realy well.

Hope this helps.

Of all the things I have lost over the years I miss my mind the most!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Mcubed, I will take a look there, before thinking on building both by myself.

I built my guns for the SE5a from scratch. The Vickers is pretty easy as the breech is hidden in the fuselage and all you need to make is the barrel and cooling jacket. I just determined some general dimesions for the Lewis and built this gun in my hands. Up close it's not the best but from a few feet away, it passes fine.

Building process is almost done and now I will focus on scale details, I will make a hole at the upper side of the fuse to accommodate the machine gun but I have to figure the properly size.
I have installed the Magnum 4 stroke 1.20 engine and I bought from tower hobbies an exhaust adapter to avoid cutting the fuse side, I was lucky as I only had to carve a little and it fits OK.
Here some pictures of the project.

I just got my SE5 kit back out again and have been hard at work on it all this week. Almost finished with the last wing panel. Looking forward to starting on the fuse. Right now I plan to power mine with a Poulan 25cc weedeater motor that I have converted. It has electronic ignition and if I cock it just a little will only have the carb sticking out the side about where the exhaust manifold came out on the full scale aircraft. I have a Zenoah G20 on a Great Planes Tiger Moth and love this engine. It was my first gas engined plane and now I am spoiled. Dont want to touch another glow engine. These little gas motors weigh about the same as a 120 4 stroke and have more power and burn less fuel without the mess. Also, the fuel is cheap in comparison and a lot easier to obtain. I spent the first part of this week converting the weedie engine and getting it running.

I also plan to lower the top wing. Modeone sent me a drawing of the modifications last summer and I will use it. Will not do too much detailing as I plan for it to be a every Sunday flyer and want to keep the field assembly time to a minimum. I will try to get some pics of the modifications as I get to them.

Now back to that wing panel.

Jim: I always wanted to have that Great Planes Tiger Moth, I love those kind of planes swince I built a 40 size Tiger Moth that use to carry Tower Hobbies from a Company named Gee Bee. Flying that plane was so adictive to me and when I crashed Bip, I ordered one just to copy the original parts and rebuild the crashed one. I still maintain the new kit in its box and my repaired Tiger Moth ready to fly.
I also want to see your engine convertion. I have not had a Gas engine before and I wish to have one some day.
Happy building.
Alfredo

Feels like I am never going to get through these wings. Working on the ailerons now.

Here is a link to a thread I had started on my engine in the engine conversions forum. Lots of info on Poulan engines there. Do a search and you will see.
