Iron Cross, As designed the Dynaflite's SE5a's top wing is approximately 1.375 inches too high. This is significant and noticable to anyone who is familiar with what the plane is supposed to look like. I am considering running the engine upright, also. However, I believe the real C/5430 was a geared Hiso powered SE5a, so the propshaft exited the radiator in the high position and the prop turned opposite the straight drive.

While some SE5as had the geared engine, this was found to fail regularly and was deleted this meant the prop shaft exited lower and the wing gun was loweered as it did not have to be as high to clear the prop.
This is as in the SE5a at the Austalian War Memorial.
Your measurement on the wing hight would seem to be spot on.
Have fun guys.

Yes I lowered the thrust line! I positioned the engine so the head just cleared the top of the fuselage. no thrust changes were made and the plane flies great. Yes the top wing is to high, the pilot would have dad to be eight foot tall to reach the wing gun for re loading. However I have not yet completed the work on the drawings to work out the structural changes to adjust this. If you are fairly new to buildin I would build the kit prety much as is . Flip the motor over if you want to ,this causes no flight changes. Be aware that you will have to do some mods for cooling.
Have fun or its not woth the effort!
Thanks... I have built kits before but never gone for any degree of scale... I have rotated engines before but usually this did not necessitate moving the engine down off the thrust line like it appears I would have to here... This one will be pretty much stock.. Looks like the hardest part is cutting out all the plastic parts.. All the vents on the bottom plate etc... Any suggestions on improving the cooling on these ?. Thanks IC

"So are you guys lowering the top wing ?... Excuse my lack of biplane experience, but is there more too it then just shortening the struts a little ?.... Has anyone flown it with the wing lowered ?"... This IS the the $64 thousand Dollar question. Everyone talks about it; but, so far nobody has actually said they have lowered it or responded to how it flew if they did.
I am going to lower it! However, how it effects the plane is still months away from being answerable. Keep tuned in kiddies!

Fokker?! That ole' thing is done. I am working on the Sopwith Pup 1/4 scale now Good to see that you are going with the classic green. Are you going to trim it in Brown or Brown?

Prop Nut ROFL..... I will probably try something different, like brown... Not sure how it will look with PC10 green though Seriously brown ?... No one has mentioned brown before ... Question.. Do you disasemble the wings to remove them ?... Or just remove and gear and slide them off assembled ?... I was wondering with that tall wing if it would slide back over the rudder ?...
Gues I am behind as usual... Didn't realize the Foker was old... You sure pump these things out

Glad I could help Mark, I live to serve :P
IC, i never take my SE5 apart, its the perfect size, fits in my trailer or the bed of my truck. When I do take it apart (once in a great while to effect a repair) I unhook the landing gear from the wing area only and unbolt the cabanes. I never thought of leaving the wings together as you need to unbolt the center top cabanes anyway.....interesting idea though. Brown sounds good for the trim color, I recommend going with just a hint of black also.....maybe on the exhaust and tire area Yep, the Fokker is old hat, I did the maiden flight way back in November.

I was also going to add a little grey around the prop area I am just trying to figure out how I am going to build this... If I can leave the wings together I can probably add some rigging etc to the wings... One of those "easy" make it look more real things... I was also thinking of adding some Red, White and blue on the rudder... Make it completly original looking..
