Anybody else ever play with an Alvis or an Abarth? Talking about the sports racing scene before 1968 when the Eco-Freaks ruined it for all of us.

Bristols, or the AC-Bristol? How about an Arnolt-Bristol? Even an Austin-Healy or Jensen-Healy?

Jaguar? Triumph? MG? Rover?

What about the 356 Porsches and the older BMWs?

THe little Alfas or the Fiat 1600S cars with the DOHC engines? Maserati 3500GT? Lancia Sports?

Didn't have to be expensive, but some were, more were available for reasonable prices.

Even what we now consider expensive exotics weren't expensive then, I bought a two year old Ferrari 250GT SWB in 1964 for $4800, and it had only run about 20 hours since a complete factory inspection.

Tell us your stories.

Here's a modern exotic to start, all aluminum, dry sump, V-12 with port injection. Can be driven on the street.

Bill.

My first car was a '54 Singer 9 with the OHC 1100 engine. It handled better than an MG TC but the alloy bodywork from the windscreen back tended to crack.

Next was an Austin 7 special with a 7/8th scale Ferrari fibreglass body. I soon found out that the standard cable operated front brakes don't work on full lock so I fitted hydraulic brakes from an Austin A30.

Next up was a Triumph TR3A with o/drive. If you pushed the redline a bit in O/D3 you could change gears twice more at 100mph

Although not exactly a sports car, I bought a '62 Studebaker Hawk GT which was much quicker than the (then) new Ford Falcon GT which had the same size engine (289) and was basically built for our local annual 500 mile road race (Bathurst).

That got traded in on a '65 Datsun Fairlady 1600 Sports which was a magic little car. I ended up trading it in when my wife got pregnant and couldn't get into it anymore

BIG gap then with stodgey (sensible) cars before getting a '72 Jensen Interceptor III which I quickly converted to LPG because that Chrysler 383 was a little thirsty. For those who aren't aware of it, the 4WD FF version was the forerunner to all modern 4WD cars. VW/Audi bought one, pulled it to pieces to find out how it worked, then built the Quattro.

A '65 MGB came into the picture for a short while, not a bad car but not what I'd call a true sports car, more of a cruiser.

About 7 years ago I finally found the sports car I'd always sworn I'd get if I ever found one at a reasonable price. Yep, back to a Datsun but this was the '68 2000 Sports which is an incredibly fast car for it's type and age. The only similar sports car that can keep up with it is the Jensen Healey with it's 2 litre Lotus engine.

Now, if only I could find a cheap Lotus/Caterham Super 7......
