I've purchased several items from your site. It was simple, straight forward, make an offer, if the seller agrees, make a purchase. Every deal I made on RCUniverse was very positive. I've purchased items from Ebay and found out that it's a dumping zone for RC stuff that's suspect or the seller wants to get more that what is considered a reasonable price.
Along with selling items, RCUniverse sets up a line of communication that is essential to make a good transaction. Bidding websites draw bidders, like gamblers, and those people are into bidding (jacking up the selling price) and not making a business transaction. Trust me on this, I have friends that make a living just selling junk and I mean junk, on Ebay. The process is, bid on your own item to raise the selling price (with an identity not used to sell the item, wifes or friend's) and run up the selling price. I'd rather just ask the seller how much they would like, if too high, make a counter offer, and work out a fair price for both to agree. Not the cloak and dagger crap that's done on Ebay.

I can't afford all new R/C equipment, so buying used is my way to still enjoy a hobby that I love doing. Along with if I crash and bring home a pile of parts, the little lady of the house doesn't get upset as much because it wasn't a big investment to start with.

You've got a great thing going, don't get caught up in the trend that's eventually going to end.

Dumping auctions entirely would be a disservice to those RCU'ers who like them; as well as eliminating a source of revenue that helps keep this site running.

When you get right down to the nut-cutting, placing something for auction on this site is simple avarice on the part of the seller. I have sold a dozen or so items through the classified ads here with prompt success. Describe your goods accurately, set a fair price, and someone will want it and buy it.

I'm glad to see that many share my distaste for auctions, for many of the same reasons. But that is no reason to eliminate them. Some folks are into cheap thrills; if they are willing to pay more than an item is really worth for the priviledge of "winning", then let them have at it.

I'll continue to ignore auctions, unless it is something I really want. Then, I'll roll the dice with the rest of the suckers...

One of the biggest beefs that pisses me off when using RC auctions and selling RC stuff on-line is that it seems RC buyers want you to build them a "custom" package.

I sold one plane through an auction service, and it seemed 1/2 the inquiries wanted me to sell just the plane, or just the motor, or the motor, plane, and no servos. or just one servo, and one guy asked if he won the auction, if I would just send him the wing.

They seem not to understand the term "AS IS, WHERE IS, WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET".

Writing the bid is everything. It must be informative with all your intentions, policies, and selling points. however, 90% of the people who view the item can't read, or won't read, but instead clog your in-box with a million stupid questions such as "what color is the plane really?" Gee, I may be color blind, but judging by the COLOR photo, um? Yellow? or "I know it states it is for a .35 to .50 size engine, but can I put my .91 on it?"
Sure you can, make an obscene bid, win, and strap a 4000lb turbine on it, I don't care.

Far as bidding, I love the game of it. I get all gushy when I win and all flabbered when I'm sniped. But thats the game. Just like flying, if you can't handle the crash, don't fly. If you can't handle getting sniped our watching the price go into infinity, don't play.

Scott

While I hate auctions, and I do filter them out, I don't think they should be axed. Since auctions are already here, people should have the choice.

If I were ever to become interested in auctions, I'd rather have them here than on E-bay.

I think if folks have will power issues, then they shouldn't look at the auctions.

So my choice on this poll isn't listed, which might be something like "I hate auctions, filter them out, extensively use the classifieds, but don't mind folks having a choice."

I'm just a guy who likes to see (or set) an asking price and haggle away (old school).

Regards,
Bart

Well, I don't look at classified here (maybe I should, maybe I will) or auctions here. I do look at classified on other sites, and buy and sell on ebay. When I bid, I bid what I am willing to pay and then go away. I get about 1 in 15 items. I figure I have too much stuff anyway, and people who outbid me are actually doing me a favor.

I hate auctions because usually---no- let me change that--- ALL OF THE ITEMS I HAVE BID ON EXCEPT 3 has the reserve starting somewhere around the retail price. So I perceive the attitude that I am definatly goning to get my price and if some fools get into a bidding war, I will make a lot more. IOW-- I don't waste my time.
set your price--it you don't get any offers then take the hint! Of corse it is a free country.

I don't "hate" auctions, I just don't like them. If I want to buy an item being offered for sale I prefer to be able to just buy it, first come, first served. I don't like bidding, re-bidding and then having to wait to see if I bought (won) it. Ask what you want for the item and if the price is right I will buy it. Post what you will sell it for and let's get on with it.

I also don't like getting into a bidding war with someone and prefer that I get first "dibs" on the item at the original listed price. I also don't enjoy getting sniped at the very end and losing an item that I really wanted. I guess you could say that I enjoy the security of knowing exactly what the item price is going to be up front, and that if I meet that price first I will receive the item.

My 2 cents.

I don't hate auctions in general. I buy things on eBay from time to time. BUT I don't like the aucitons here. They aren't very intuitive and I think there are not enough safeguards in place.

I say leave aucitons to eBay and the classifieds are fine here. Classifieds workd because peopel can actually discuss and make offers more efficiently. you also so know better what type of person you are selling to if you can communicated without a rush.

I like other's here can't sit by the computer and change my bids. I also have dial-up at home. so if I get beat int the last 30 seconds... it's over.

Sorry if my question is deemed inappropriate here, but I couldn't find a better fit with any other thread.

I not only like auctions, but it's the reason I signed up at RCUniverse! However, after a brief perusal of the site, I'm worried my goal may be at odds with the purposes of most others here.

A friend's husband passed away and left her with a basement and garage full of RC models and equipment. Everything from a 1 foot long electric Indy 500 style racecar to a Piper Cub model hanging in the garage that looks big enough for a Chimp Pilot(Exaggeration - about a 7 ft wingspan, with an engine suitable for a lawn mower!) I've been elected to help her sell it off, but I've had no experience with model or hobby auctions, only antiques. After having a few inherited paintings "stolen" from me by local art dealers, I discovered well attended auctions, and swear by them. My only knowledge of the field is derived from having built and flown Control Line Model Airplanes as a teenager.

I've bought various items on Ebay, but fear of the possible pitfalls there has kept me from becoming a seller. Besides, I can't imagine packing up the Piper! I've sold to local people using CraigsList and I like the personal contact and cash transactions but the potential to learn value is missing there. The reason I'm here annoying you (I hope not) is because I would like to find a repudable LIVE RC Model Auction that I could haul my friend and her stuff to with no more than 1 overnight stay.

If you would like to convince me that this is a bad idea, I'll listen!

Thanks in advance,

I realize Guineau has responded to a thread 3 years dormant, but :

I thought I read that Auctions were no longer held on RCU. Well, just now I went to the Advanced Search, and in theupper right hand corner of the search window, my cursor brought up a little memo box that said (paraphrasing here) Advanced Search returns both Classifieds and Auctions.

So... are auctions gone? If so, you might want to look at that advanced search window.

Good luck,
Dave Olson

Thanks for your reply Dave,

As usual, I was too wordy, resulting in the main point of my post getting lost in the shuffle. I posted in response to the "Survey Follow up" request that I was presented with only minutes after becoming a brand new member of RCUniverse! It pays to read the fine print. (Maybe that poll will be removed some day?)

I also followed your suggestion and checked out the advanced search options. If these were my items for sale and I had the time to market each one here, I would probably get started now. However, my friend has a lot of items to sell, which would require considerable time that I don't have, as I would have to do research to determine a fair bottomline selling price, photograph, describe, and eventually pack and ship, each item.

After posting, I [belatedly] started perusing the site, and see that, in fact, I probably have found the right place to help a friend sell her models. However, I still haven't given up on the possibility of taking all the items for sale to a "Live" auction, if a good one exists. Can you point me to one? And as I stated in my original post, if you would like to convince me that this is a bad idea, I'll listen!

Thanks,
El Guineu
