This thread is intended to field more information from those who took our Market Preference Survey (Take Now) and responded that they "hate auctions".

Here's what we are trying to determine:

Assuming you hate auctions, please answer the poll and then tell us:

1. What about auctions makes them so repugnant to you that you hate them.

2. Whether you were aware that you could simply filter auctions out of your shopping experience with one setting in your My Market area.

Your poll doesn't include my reason. I buy on RCU because it's a simple, and usually very direct and timely transaction between buyer and seller. Auctions eat up too much time, require too much monitoring, and if I'm desperate, I belong on eBay with the rest.

I think RCU needs to be straight buy/sell, leaving the auctions to others.

I don't like auctions because I'm one of those who can't LIVE by the computer and make a last second bid....so I don't participate on Ebay either. And yes, I filter out the auctions!

I just refuse to get in a bidding war.

Tell me what you want, and I'll decide if I'll pay it.

I don't really hate auctions themselves. I hate what they turn into, a bidding war over a box of wood. It gets ridiculous. Seems every kit listed on the other site (you know where) is either rare or a collectors item. I've seen people way over retail for a Senior Telemaster because they got involved in a bidding war. Just tell me what you want, I'll decide if I want to pay it.

Like most others have stated, it's a bidding war concern. I like RCU because someone advertises something, and I can buy it, or even haggle a fair price (to me) for it. With auctions, pride and impulse buying gets in the way. I once 'won' a EZ Models NIB .25 size Christen Eagle on EekBay, paid a whopping $375 for it (lost my mind), only to find out it was missing some of the famous decals, and once built, it was probably the WORST flying airplane I've ever flown, and I'm hardly a beginning flyer. That was the last time I let my emotion carry me like that. I eventually gave it to a Grandpa, and he hung it up in his grand-kid's room. Still looked great (minus the cowl decals), and the kid was thrilled, about all it was good for.

If I find something I really like at auction, I'll keep looking, because I know it exists out there still. Classifed ads and swap shops are what I pay attention to, when it comes to used equipment. And it's mainly swap shops, because I can touch and feel the merchandise. For new items, most of my purchases are done through my local hobby shop. I like the online ads RC Universe offers in this respect, because I can see what's out there, but I'm no longer the type of flier that will buy just off the flashy ad. I'll let others beta-test for me, and when I see it in action, then I'll consider it.

Seems terribly old fashioned, but that's the result. I don't have the latest thing on the block anymore, but that's not really why I got into model airplanes, anyway. I got into this, because I can build and fly something unique, a piece of history if you will, that otherwise I couldn't be able to do. My personal hangar is now far smaller that most others (probably), but what I do have, works well, looks good, and is personally pleasing to me. I was up to 22(!) aircraft ready-to-fly at one time, now I save a LOT more money for other parts of my life, and keep my hangar down to 6 or less, ready-to-go. Got at least 7 bigger r/c kits to build if I like, and numerous other projects to scratch build when time permits. Got a closet full of FF kits to convert to r/c, and for reference. Got a cabinet full of plans to build off of, and for reference for my own design efforts. A shelf full of books, a CAD system and Compufoil on the computer, and drawing programs of all sorts. I have enough right this moment to keep me busy forever. Don't you?

You wanted to know,

Phil

Great feedback so far guys. I get that the auction transaction is not preferrable. What I'm wondering is whether the mere sight of an auction in our market area is so repulsive that you'll just ignore the rest of the ads. The bottom line for us is whether we should:

A. Keep auctions for those who like them and allow others the option to filter them out

B. Nuke auctions altogether and leave those who like them with no options

On eBay I am a big fan of the "buy it now" option because there is no hassle and no wondering "did I win, did I? did I?" I like to see something, see the price, pay the money and get the item...the tension of the unknown is worth avoiding to me.

If I want an auctioned-off item I'll go to ebay. I prefer to keep RCU on a simple, easy, fixed-price by/sell market area.

I go to RCU classifieds when I am looking for something R/C. I see it, make an offer, strike a deal (or not). Quick and clean. When I have something to sell, here it is, I set a fair price, get an offer, deal a little, sell it. Except when some joker comes back with "What's the least you'll take for it?" Sometimes I reply, "What's the most you'll pay for it?" . Serious buyers will make an offer. I don't care how many auctions you have, as long as I can filter them out

My sentiment is much like some of the others I have read on this thread. If I wan't an auction I go to ebay. I go to places like the RCU classifieds when I'm looking for a particular item and want to buy it now, not wait on an auction.

Hopefully, if auctions are taken off RCU, those who would otherwise auction their merchandise would then sell it outright, rather than taking their goods to ebay. That is my hope. I suppose if I were in a position to profit from auctions, I would want to retain them so that I would not lose any business.

I avoid ebay's auctions, and only pay attention to the ads that offer "buy it now". Perhaps if I were retired, bored or had too much free time on my hands, auctions would be more appealing.

You can't please everyone. Make a decision and stick with it! I can ignore auctions if necessary. I'm just glad we have a hobby-specific forum to obtain merchandise at other than retail prices.

Filtering out the auctions may be a reasonable solution. I don't feel that just because I don't like them, that they shouldn't be allowed.

I do hate, however, to look at an item. Get excited about it, and then realize that it is an auction.
