Some help ..
I just recieved the new GP Chipmunk.. Big sucker...
I fly @ 4000 asl and want to put in a Tartan twin..
Too much?
84" wingspan an 1200 sq in... 14lbs
I fly a GP Eagle and a Goldberg Ultimate normally.
Chip. has a 1/2" marine ply firewall. No box like the Eagle.
VERY sturdy f/g fuse.
Wing joiner 1/8" alum.. hell for stout

Cap
I don't understand how they say that a .90 or a 1.20 would fly the thing and do aerobatics
There's ample room for smoke, my left hand and more. This ARF IS well made also. Better monocoat covering than on the GP Eagle.
Should be ready to fly in a coupla weeks.
The last Chippie I had(20 yrs ago) was Jack Staffords. Never saw so many chunks of balsa.
Box weighed 12 lbs and by the time I finished the carving, sanding, I had 8 lbs of shavings and sawdusd on th floor

Hi Zebra!

I was doing my research about the GP Super Chipmunk and found you. Probably by now you have flown the thing. Tell me, what type of engine did you use? Do you thing an O.S. 1.20 do the job? if not, what engine you recommend ( I don't want a rocket pocket in my hands please).

Thanks!

I have flown my chippy all year with a Moki 2.1 2stroke in it. I really do not know how it could fly on the recommended engines because mine is still limited vertically. I had to revert to a 3 bladed 18x6-10 prop to get it to slow down enough for landing... lol..... and for ground clearance but it flys great and does everrything Art Scholl did with the full scale and then some. I love my chippy with the Moki 2.1 in it. I would not consider anything less then a 1.8

[fHi Bolt
Sorry for the late response... Major surgery to my pump, so things are alittle slow yet
I put a Tartan twin in the Chipmonk. Mostly 'cause the building article made the remark that it took
22 ounces of lead to balance the thing with a 1.20 mounted!!!
The Tartan is about 2.4 displacement and balances the machine to a tee.
Only real problem was how to make the cowl work properly.I had to split it and
rejoin with some fasteners. Work came to a stand stioo, but the ole bod is redilding itself and I'll
get that thing in the air this year for sure.I, personally don't think
that it will be overpowered. It has a awful lot fo drag.
As soon as I can, Ill put the thing together and fire off a pix. The thing is.was a great value for an AC of that size.

ZebraOne:

Thanks for your reply. Sorry about your pump. Never heard of that Tartan engine you mention. Can you send me more info. on it? I was planning to use my pumped O.S. 1.20 (still in the box) for that Chipmunk but I think I'll have to look for another "home" for it. Why G.P. keeps advertising this plane for a 1.20? Everything I have read in this forum says that it will be underpowered with one. That's why I love R.C. Universe, it is like our own Consumer Report magazine! By the way I'm finishing the Goldberg version of the Chipmunk, this one will fly soon.

I builta Jack Stafford Chipmonk, way backwhen, and it was a delight to fly! Used a Fox .74 twin glowplug engine. Was a bit over powered, but a real fun machine to fly.
Have a ball and keep me/us posted on your progress with the "King Chipmonk".

I was wondering about this myself. I've been trying to decide between the Giant Sportster and the Chipmunk and the difference in the recommended power system is quite large, even though the planes are very close concerning the airframes. The Sportster has more wing area and lower loading and they recommend a 32cc for gas and it only weighs a pound more than the Chipmunk.

I had pretty much decided on the Sportster and have ordered a Brillelli 40GT, but I've been wondering if the 40 would fit the Chipmunk. Any input?

The tartan twin is 2.4 CuIn.
Makes the balance very close. I moved the Flite pac back and all seem well.
I haven't had a chance to fly it yet. major surgery, but it looks ok for next weekend.
I have a tough time tetting all the parts into my Van
Maybe i ought to get me a little trailer of some sort if i keep making these big'un. Really had trouble with the GP Eagle
